One of the flagship reels for Shimano's SR® Concept, the Stella FD is smooth, silent,
strong and, most important, reliable. It features the oversized 3D drive gear, 3BB oscillation, floating shaft, slider and a boltless and balanced magnesium body including frame and sideplates. The Paladin Gear Durability Enhancement uses a cold-forged aluminum
drive gear with a special hardened brass pinion gear to give you a drivetrain that's more
durable than stainless steel. It also stays smoother for a longer period than other gear
systems. The Propulsion Line Management System uses a propulsion spool, SR one-piece bail wire, Power Roller III, redesigned bail trip mechanism and S-arm cam for
longer, more accurate casts with less effort. They also drastically reduce the chance of
backlash, wind knots or tangles. The Aerowrap II Oscillation worm gear also helps casting distance by reducing friction and increasing efficiency for maximum energy transfer.
Shielded S A-RB bearings are protected by rubber or stainless steel. The rigid support
drag is waterproof to keep sand and dirt from interfering. The maintenance port allows
for easy lubrication of the drivetrain.Machined-aluminum handle with Septon® grips.

"I have used the 2 previous generations of the Stella and this new model has no improvements over it's predessor. I have had bail problems frequently and a noisy drive train, but it does cast well and it does cost twice the price of the Sustain which I have had no problems with at all. This new model is over rated, buy 2 Sustains in different sizes and you will have better equipement for different applications. New models sometimes have problems as I have experienced the same bail and worm gear problems with the new Stradic, but the 2 new Sustain's have had 5 times the use without a glitch. I am seriously considering trying some other brands after being a Shimano user for over 25 years."

I finally bought one, and it is worth it.,October 6, 2007

"I have been fishing with StCroix Rods and Shimano spinning reels for several years. They have proved to be a good combination for distance, sensitivity, smooth drag, and good fish control. During that time I have had my eye on the Stella, but I could not see investing that much money in a reel. I finally broke down and bought one about two months ago. I could not believe the smoothness of the drag the first time I hooked a big fish. I did not see any great advantage in the new spool design, but it did add a little more distance to my casts. The smoothnes and antireverse match that of my other Shimano reels. I will keep buying the sustain and symetre for most of my rods, but this reel is special and if you fish a lot you should own at least one for your favorite rod."

A very good reel,September 22, 2007
By kanadakidfrom New Jersey
"I have had this new stella for over a month. It has probably 200 Smallmouth bass on it. I ended up buying this reel because several other expensive freshwater reels would not stand up to fishing with tubes, soft and hard jerbaits using braided line.
I actually wore a set of gears out on one reel in a single 3 day weekend fishing for Smallmouth. The probelm I was having was that the reels felt good in the store, but with hard hooksets with braid and the hard fighting SM Bass they would not stay smooth long.
So far this reel is still as smooth as when I purchased it. I'm using 14 lb braid and have been fishing mainly jerkbaits and tubes.
The other most notable feature besides its smoothness is the drag. It is unbleiveably smooth and accurate. It let go at the presise moment without and binding or surging. It feel like a fine swiss timepiece.
Hopefully the other reels in the lineup with provide the same performance. But since I haven't used them I can't speak to their performance. However, so far I'm very pleased with how it is holding up. So far better than any other reel I have used to date.
