Woodmans Pal is basic Steel Blade for slashing,
April 8, 2009
By mustangjs
from Long Island, NY
|
"I like the PAL however was a bit disapointed by the finish.
This is no pretty boy tool, it's ment for cutting and that's what it does. A very basic steel plate, stamped and sharpened.
Add a rough wood handle and your done! If you want a machette, go buy one, the PAL is for cutting brush and that's what it does quite well. Soft branches, sliced; overgrowth, hacked.
Don't expect anything but a very basic and useful tool. nuff said!"

There are better choices,
November 21, 2008
By DoctorZee
from Texas
|
"This tool does nothing well on the vegetation in my area of the country. I live in Texas. It is too short to swing as a machette while clearing brush, and it is too light to use as an axe when cutting limbs. It may be better suited for other types of vegetation in other parts of the country, but I have not found very much this tool excels in down here. It seems to be made well but the design is not appropriate for what it is advertised to do."

Not as sharp or effective as expected,

Woodsman Pal good and bad,
August 4, 2008
By Chrisnflorida
|
"I really like the Woodsmans Pal in that it is flat and light for its size, so it fits in my pack very well. The carbon steel blade is strong and sharpens well, holding an edge through some good abuse. The only problems that I could see at all was that it is not as good as an axe in cases where you may need to baton, and the tip that is blunt "for safety" is a real pain. I grinded the tip down to an edge so the edge extends from handle to tip now. Other than that I like the pals ability to tackle big jobs."

Amazing Tool,

By phall92139

"I was amazed at the balance of the tool and the leverage and force attained with so little effort. I've used mine to trim both Palm and Rubber trees. It slices through frawns and limbs like butter. Excellent quality tool. I would suggest either wrapping or coating the wooden handle with some kind of anit-slip material to ensure a better grip. Other than that...amazing tool!"

Fine steel, far beyond my highest expectations.,
March 20, 2008
By Apache79
from Covington Indiana

"I just received my Woodsman's Pal today along with my Outback Lodge tent and floor, and I have to say that I was blown away. I have studied steel and true swords for years now mostly Japanese katana, so I know a thing or two about quality steel and construction and it's intricacies.
Immediately the weight of it told me a few things, the grip feels very comfortable in the hand and is made of good quality hard wood and double riveted and feels very solid with no play or movement and even has a quality lanyard attached to the pommel.
The sheath is very high quality, though oddly shaped unlike anything I have seen it is perfect for the design and with the blade secured into it provides a safe and snug fit for traveling on foot or in a pack and it also has a fine leather company patch securely affixed to the exterior which is a nice aesthetic. It only takes a moment to deploy from the sheath, and upon examining the blade for the first time I have to say it took all of my previous conceptions I had gotten from looking at it in the catalog and blew them away. The Woodsman's Pal, I can see why it's design has not changed in over 40 years.
Form and function are united with a keen eye to detail and no non sense construction, the steel is thick and you can see and feel the quality in it's balanced length. I have looked at all the machete products offered at many places on line and offline, most if not all look good but the steel is thin and flimsy and to me that is not quality. I have tried many machete', and due to their sometimes extreme flexibility they prove to be weak in the cutting range and offer nothing but the ability to whack weeds and maybe and occasional vine if your lucky.
A camper or any outdoors man will greatly appreciate this quality blade and it's numerous functions in the field, clearing a path, cutting small to medium woods for your base fire and many other things come naturally for this tool. And all with no flexing "like a cheap cookie sheet", if I were to recommend a camp tool aside from an ax that is truly handy with no frills and no BS this would be it.
The pros are all above, now what about cons?
Well the only con I can possibly speak of is about the interior pocket that holds the small sharpening stone, yes it holds the stone loosely and has a decent probability of "jumping out" into the sheath with the blade. And yes it is probable it could scratch the coating on the blade, but it is fixable if you have any sort of creativity.
As for me I have velcro strips I plan on cutting to size, then turn the sheath inside out and affix the strips with their own glue then do a bit of reinforcing stitching, to keep the velcro seated. Problem solved and a small one at that, and it is easily fixable and from that point on it is perfect.
I would HIGHLY recommend this product to any one who is looking for a great and durable camp blade, you cannot go wrong in any light with the Woodsman's Pal it is truly a must have for any outdoor enthusiast.
Oh and about the price...this is something that will last a lifetime and heck you might find yourself passing it onto your kids one day. Investment quality, functional and extremely durable. You can't go wrong, it will be the first and last you buy."

"This machete design and construction is the best without a doubt. I have used this blade here and in several African countries with fantastic results. I leave them as gifts for PH's and trackers who report back that they are kept as treasures on their belts and would never trade them away. This machete has been around for many years and is made in the USA of quality steel."

American made quality,

"My Dad still uses the Woodman's Pal that was issued to him while serving in Vietnam. After borrowing his for many years I finally got one of my own. The excellent quality of this tool has not changed in 40 years. Thanks to the Woodman's Pal I have had great success bowhunting in really thick cover. The Pal is perfect "creating" trails to funnel deer within shooting range of my stands and blinds. The long edge takes down branches and sapling in no time and the sickle hook removes vines and bushes just as quickly."
