    Worthless, October 31, 2009
    By Rafterman8 from MO

"Bought this thinking how cool, Man vs. Wild uses one every episode to save his life, so I thought I would give it a try, hoping that it would be a reliable addition to my camping gear. First impression was that it was very high priced, I expected to get 3 for the money. But I wanted to try it, so I gathered up a bunch of small dry, dusty kindling in the corners of the garage, 1/2 hour later and hands sore and a good bite out of the stick gone, I gave up. Would not want my life depending on this! And the reality is, unless you are in the desert, fire starter materials are not going to be bone dry. Water proof matches are far superior."

    firesteel striker, October 14, 2009
    By nutsforgear from minneapolis, MN

"i've never had a lighter like this before but i'm really liking it so far. ive used it when it was raining lightly and matches wouldn't stay lit. i've also used it when it was rather cold and the kindling was therefore cold too, and needed a longer burning source of heat before it would catch. i'd read about this before i bought it and didn't have any surprises when i opened it. like the instructions say: scrape off the black coating first. dryer lint works like a charm; cotton balls work nicely too. i tried some with vaseline in them, that did ok. i tried this with dry pine needles and it needed a lot of strikes done really quickly together to light that way. the dryer lint has a nice slow burn to it so it heats your kindling well. i found the cord attaching the pieces too short and replaced it with a longer one. also i'd like to see this item have a little longer shaft to scrape on for more spark. a wonderful addition to my camping tools."

    BEST ONE, September 28, 2009
    By kage82 from Alabama

"I have several different fire starting implements and this is the best bar none. I own a magnesium bar and many different brands and types of strike bars like this one, but this one is far above them all. It will throw a very hot spark two feet above the ground with no effort at all. I have the Army model and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Starts fires as easy as a match if you have the right fuel/tender. IT IS WORTH THE MONEY!!! The person that talked about the aiming in a previous review must have it 10 foot above the place where he/she is starting the fire because this one throws a massive spark."

    Fast fire, July 29, 2009
    By sdinoh

"First use: Two strikes to get a fire going. Not too bad. Took on Boy Scout camping trip. Some of the boys had problems using. They couldn't hold it still enough or shot the sparks over the material instead of into it. Not a product issue, though. Lanyard kind of annoying, but it can be removed. It's not an issue that should drop the rating or prevent a purchase."

    I love this thing, July 28, 2009
    By StormRhydr from TN

"I love this thing, lol. It works. I will say that one needs dry tinder to start a fire, but with that (I used dryer lint) my wife, 12 yr old boy and myself all got fires easily going."

    FireSteel, July 7, 2009
    By borodimuer from Seattle

"This product seems to hold up well and is certainly easy to use. I had the best results using a cotton ball with some Vasoline on it, but not coating it. Pull the cotton ball apart lightly and throw some sparks at it. Easier than a lighter."

    FireSteel, June 17, 2009
    By Anonymous from Arizona

"Kinda have to hold your tongue right to get big sparks every time, but I didn't take the paint off. The lanyard could be a little longer so you could get more oomph into the stroke or maybe make the magnesium striker longer, but it does work."

    Works great!, June 15, 2009
By paholo38 from San Mateo, CA

"Using dryer lint, it took me about 4 strokes to throw off a big spark that instantly lit the lint. Wow! Works great. To those who have problems getting a spark to light, it's all about the angle of the stroke. The right angle consistently throws off nice sparks. Definitely a must have for camping/backpacking."

    Pretty Good, April 9, 2009
    By fendr89

"I have purchased the Scout model, and it works great! One problem: The rod doesn't last as log as you'd think. I have started about 5 fires with it, and it takes quite abit of spars to get it going. Just make sure you have more tinder and wood on hand, for it burns pretty quick. The only reason I gave it a 4 was because it wore down pretty quickly."

Great For Lighting Backpacking Stove, April 7, 2009
    By Borealbushman from Alberta, Canada

"This firesteel does the job. One slow strike and the backing stove is lit. Lighting a stove at -20 in the northern bush with matches that become soggy as soon as I touch them with my warm hands is no fun. With the firesteel I leave my gloves on, strike in the direction of my stove and it lights every time. Even when the steel is wet, a slow strike creates a huge spark."

Well worth having..., March 18, 2009
By PappaTu from Upper Golden Grove, NB Canada

"After receiving the "Fire Steel" lighter I headed straight out to the back yard to try it. When I couldn't get it to start a fire after striking it several times I was beginning to wonder if it was worth the cost of the purchase. However, it wasn't long before I was very successful at the art of making fire with a Fire Steel flint.

Now that I have it..I am hoping that I will never have to use it other than to demostrate to my friends how well it works. The comfort comes with the peace of mind you get knowing that it is in your back pack in the case of an emergency.

I would highly reccomend that everyone that is involved with any type of outdoor sport purchase a Fire Steel fire starter....

    What can I say...It works, March 3, 2009
    By Jkapral from Severn, MD

"Works great. I was able to get my tender lite with only a few strokes of the FireSteel. I have not tried wet, but I have no doubt it will work.

This is an absolute must in anyone's hunting, fishing, camping or outdoor gear. It is small enough you can take it anywhere.
