Cabela's XPG™ Ultralight Wing

When you need an ultralight, durable, portable shelter, the versatile XPG Ultralight Wing is the answer. It can be set up in various configurations for shelter, making it perfect for backpacking, boating or hunting. It packs small and is extremely lightweight. Attached guy lines allow you to stretch the wing out between two trees. The guy out loops also allow you to stake down the corners, and place the opposite corners on trekking poles or adjustable-height poles (not included) for a more tent-style shelter. There is a loop on the top of the wing that can be hung from a tree as well to create increased center height. The wing is made of 40D ripstop nylon that has a 1,500mm waterproof PU coating and taped seams to keep you dry. Includes a lightweight stuff sack and six aluminum stakes. Specify model from chart. "This works well for back packing and in cases of an emergency if one has to stay overnight. Light weight which works well even if being used for with horses and mules when going to the high country. Easily room for one person, but two could use as shelter if necessary."

Smaller than expected, June 11, 2007

"The wing didn't quite meet my needs. The dimensions are 8ft by 8ft with a diagonal measurement of 10ft. I got confused between the picture with the diagonal measurement and the ordering line that says 10x10.

It is light weight and there are 3 attached guy strings. The 4th corner I staked to the ground to protect me from wind and rain. In this bivy configuration my feet were crowded. My sleeping bag was pushed against the sides of the wing. If I ever had much condensation, which is possible in my damp climate then my bag would probably get wet.

I tried an L shape lean to with approx 1/4 to 1/3 of the wing under me as a ground cloth but found the lean to wall too close to my face. I had to scoot half off the ground cloth section and then was nearly out from the shelter of the lean to roof.

I also found an A frame configuration with the side corners staked to the ground and a separate ground cloth to be to too confining although this was my best option.
I looks like I just need the size and versatility of a 10x10 or 8x10 flat tarp. If you can sleep with the tarp higher off the ground and therefore more exposed you can probably mangage with its smaller size."
