  • Protects your prop and gear case
  • Easy-to-install with included adhesive
  • Design balances flow and reduces vibration
  • This easy-to-install skeg is engineered to take punishment and enhance the performance of your boat. Because it's attached using a special urethane adhesive (included in the kit), no drilling or fasteners are needed. Plus, this high-strength adhesive absorbs the force of impacts with underwater obstructions while sealing out sand and debris. Because it is a true-shaped component on both sides, it balances flow and reduces vibration. Tapered wings add structural reinforcement and create lift.

    Item notes
Manufacturer suggests that at least 1/2 the original skeg length should be present on the motor's lower end for installation of this product. Use larger size if between sizes. The Mercruiser Alpha 1 measurements would indicate that it would use the medium size but it takes the small size.

    Blackfin, November 19, 2009
    By Will06 from Tallahassee, Florida

"Low rating for ordering process, not the product itself. I followed the instructions and found the part to be too big. I have a Mercury 90 horse and according to the chart I needed a medium. I contacted Blackfin and they told me this site's chart is wrong and I needed a small. This is not the first time this has happened accordng to the manufacture. I suggest contacting Blackfin first for proper ordering. This may explain why some have had trouble with them coming off."

Blackfin Skeg protector, August 17, 2009
    By Firefish from Texas

"I gave it a one star simply because I do not have it anymore. After two boat outings it fell off at some point.
I did exactly as the instructions said. I still have all the glue on my skeg which is a full one. So there was plenty of skeg for the fin to adhere to.
Seems the glue that comes with it did not adhere to the inside of the blackfin for very long.
I was going to also bolt it on as a backup attachment, but the instructions lead me to believe it would hold up on it's own.
I have now ordered and am waiting for the delivery of a stainless skeg guard that will bolt on.
If you buy this product I encourage you to bolt it on also with stainless bolts and nuts. All it takes is two at the top. Look up the stainless skeg guards to see how the are done.

"Easy to install, just follow the instructions, which is simple and exact. I have used this product before and would recommend it to a friend. Great for minimizing damage to the skeg from any contact with objects above and below the water. Pricing for this item at Cabela's was 35% less than in Canada."

easy to install, August 10, 2009
    By chitown1985bears from Monmouth, IL

"Previous reviews make it seem messy and hard to attach but I found it very easy. Use commom sense to install and it will be fine. I'm not sure if it is as good as a stainless steel protector. I will find out soon enough."

Saved my Skeg, May 24, 2009
By ShallowHal from Corpus Chisti, Texas

"I fish & hunt in both fresh and saltwater, mostly very shallow. I've had this skeg protector on almost since the motor was new. Never had a problem with it coming loose and it has saved my skeg more than once, almost once every trip. I run a 150 Etec, so its not like I'm just puttin around the lake, we get there at a good clip. I'm about to purchase my second one, the original is just too beat, (see destroyed). But it did it's job and lasted about 3 years. I highly recommend this product, if you like your skeg."

    Blackfin Skeg, May 12, 2009
    By Rodneys from Atlanta, GA

"The problem I had with the Skeg was that it did not fit my motor. I had called Blackfin and they recommended the one that I ordered, but it was to big. The smaller one was to small. I have a Honda 4-Stroke 150 HP."

"this product works great. i read some reviews about fin getting loose. i have had no problems, i believe if you prep the metal right so that the fin bonds to its metal contact you will never have a problem. the fin comes with more then enough hardener
    to do the job.
    thank you

    BLACKFIN PROTECTOR, March 23, 2009
    By TBONZFISHINGTEAM from VALLEY MILLS,TEXAS

"I RUN SALTWATER AND FRESHWATER BOTH AND SWEAR BY THE BLACKFIN SKEG PROTECTOR. I AM ON MY SECOND ONE AS THESE ITEMS HAVE BEEN SACRIFICIAL. I FISH A LOT OF SHALLOW SALT WATER AND THE PROTECTOR HAS SAVED MY SKEG TOO MANY TIMES TOO COUNT . IN FRESH WATER WE FISH OUR RIVERS EXTENSIVELY AND RECENTLY STRUCK A SUBMERGED STUMP AT ABOUT 30 MPH. THE SKEG PROTECTOR TOOK THE BRUNT OF THE IMPACT AND SAVED MY LOWER UNIT. BEST $$$$ I EVER SPENT ON MY BOAT. I LOST THE PROTECTOR BUT SAVED A MOTOR. I HAD ONE BACK ON IN ABOUT 2 DAYS . I CANT HIT THE WATER WITHOUT ONE. EXCELLENT PRODUCT AND HAVE TURNED ALL MY FISHING BUDDIES ON TO THEM. I RUN A 22' CENTURY CC WITH A 200 HP YAMAHA AND IT HAS'NT HAMPERED PERFORMANCE AT ALL."

Worked as Advertised, March 9, 2009
By Waterdog22 from Belle Chasse, LA

"I live in Louisiana just south of New Orleans and I use my boat in the lakes, bayous and the Mississippi River. Unless you are in the Mississippi 4 ft of water is considered deep. With all the pipes and well heads from the oil and gas industry, it is not a matter “if” you are going to hit something, rather “when”. In the last ten years I have hit two submerged objects resulting in the loss of a skeg and a damaged prop.

This last time I had a metal skeg welded on and I installed a Blackfin. Installation while not hard if done properly is messy. You need to make sure that you fill up the Blackfin with provided rubberized sealant. It worked well for about two years until I damaged it hitting a submerged concrete curb on a boat ramp backing in the water. It was my first experience with this ramp and I did not raise the motor high enough.

The Blackfin was damaged but the metal skeg survived. To install a second Blackfin I literally had to cut and grind the old one off. For the guys that are having problems keeping the Blackfin on, they are either not installing it properly and or there is not enough left of the original skeg for the Blackfin to grab on to. For my installation I took the paint/finish off to the bare metal and cleaned the surface with a degreaser/solvent.

I installed my second one today. The only thing different on the new ones is that there are weep holes in skeg. The weep holes let the excess sealant come out of the holes instead of coming out at the top. It is still messy, however it is easier to ensure that the fin is full of sealant.

I would not recommend that you buy it and install it unless you have a good portion of the original skeg left on the unit. If you have enough skeg left and you install it according to directions, it will not “Fall Off”, just ask my grinder !

Black fin skeg protector, March 1, 2009
By ChiefMike from Palm Beach Florida

"I have purchased two of these protectors. Both detaached from the boat in less than one hour of use.

While the skeg protector itself apears to enhance performance capabilities, its abilities to stay adhered to the I/O skeg is extremely poor. Second cure time was 96 hours before putting boat in the water.

After the first failure I contacted Blackfin, but recieved no response.

Unless they come up with a better design, I would not recommennd this item to anyone. A simple thru bolt like the one used on thestainless skeg guard would cure this problem

Blackfin Skeg Protector, October 13, 2008
By LakeWinnebago from Fond du Lac, WI

"Used this product to cover a skeg that was broken and bent. I cut off the bend and applied the Blackfin and found it to be a very worthy product and much less expense than buying a new gear case. Care needs to be taken to prepare the surface per insturctions and be sure to use masking tape to keep from the excess adhesive from forming on the gear case and potentially covering the screw for draining the gear case fluid. I've had mine in use for 2 fishing seasons and I fish a shallow rocky reef lake and I could not be happier with the results. I looks good, wears well and I couldn't be happier. I have recommended this product to friends who are thinking about a complete replacement of the gear case when they only have minor damage to the skeg."

product does not match description, June 13, 2008
By MackDelta from Inuvik, Northwest Territories, Canada

"The product description on Cabela's site states the small size is for 11 1/2 inch and smaller while the instructions included with the skeg state small fits 10 1/2-11 1/2 inch. If I had known this I would not have ordered the product. It does not fit my 50 HP Honda - not even close. I will try to cut it and make it fit."

    Replacement Skeg, June 13, 2008
    By 373ranger

"I purchased and installed the blackfin last spring, after hitting a log submerged about a foot under the water and breaking off 3/4 of the original.
The new skeg slowed the boat top end speed down about 4 or 5 miles. But other then that it works great. It still works well on the 2nd year of use.
