"I am a police officer and travel a lot. In this day and age, I always travel armed. Obviously, when I travel by air, unless transporting prisoners, I need to check my firearm in checked baggage. I started looking at locking cases small enough to fit inside a hard sided suitcase and found this one. Being a long time Cabela’s customer I looked at this model very closely. After reading the reviews regarding the smell and the lock troubles, I almost didn’t buy this one but I thought I would at least try it. I have never had any problems with Cabela’s making things right before so if I didn’t like this one I knew I could return it. When it arrived, I examined it very closely. Either Cabela’s listened and fixed the things that were reported to be wrong with this or some of these were just a fluke because the one I received was perfect! My Glock 17 fits inside just right, the foam padding has no odor at all and the lock works perfectly. Congrats Cabela’s."

"This is a great product. It's simple and does exactly what it says it does. It is definitely not for quick access nor is is a real "safe", but if you need a place to secure your handgun in a vehicle or possibly even in a home (providing you bolt it down), this will do. The cable allows me to securely stash my pistol under the seat of the truck when I can not CC. Sure you could crack it open with a pry bar and a little time, but whose going to go through all that if they breaking into your car. I recommend the product."

"I bought two of the safes with the combination locks. I successfully locked and unlocked one of them several times before it remained locked and would not open. No, I did not forget the combination. Luckily it was still empty except for the cable. The second safe also had lock problems as it is now open with the latch locked shut. It comes with the factory setting to 000 and you have to switch the latch from A to B and then set your own combo. If you try to reset the combo after that then it locks up and that's it. The latch won't open. I'd recommend the key lock with this safe."

"The gun safe met my expectations. The foam padding inside stinks to high heaven. I washed the padding with liquid dish detergent and air dried. That reduced the smell. Before reinstalling, I placed fabric softener sheets between the padding and safe. So far that has suppressed the terrible odor.
The combination lock and latch worked fine. Changing the combination was simple and worked the first time.
My intended use is to safe my handgun from the grand kids in my truck, house and office."

"On the plus side, the safe is a convenient size, and fits under a seat or attaches to a console in your vehicle. However, there are strong negatives. The lock doesn't work easily. In fact the first time I set the combination, I thought I would never get it back open. Additionally, the cable appears that it could be defeated with a pair of heavy duty snips. In short, this may work only for preventing children and less than determined thieves"

"I'd recommend avoiding this.
The knob to turn the latch closed works just fine with the safe open, but as soon as I try to turn it with the safe closed it gets stuck and won't turn. I don't think that the hole for the latch to turn into lines up right. When it does work, it seems difficult to turn.
I haven't even put a firearm (or anything else) in it yet, but I'd be afraid to do so since I'm not even confident that it would open back up correctly."

Not as good as the "key" version,March 30, 2009

"I own the "key" version of this storage safe and it works like a charm! The latch and lock mechanism are made entirely with metal parts. Unlike the "combination" version, there are inner plastic parts to the lock. I had not tried breaking into it but it does not look difficult for curious and determined kids to open the combination version with a flathead screwdriver. Also the numbers do not align easily and it has a small plastic turn knob that catches when it is closed, making it difficult to open even when your have the correct combination. It may take awhile fiddling the small knob open without breaking it off to get to your firearm. I brought this case to the range and it took me 5 minutes to open while other people can see I am having a hard time and can read the combination. It’s a good thing you can change the combo anytime.
I use the "key" version more often because I have peace of mind that my firearm is secure rather than it being combination convenient not having to use a key. And for me, the key version takes less time to open."

"I guess you really do get what you pay for. Good price, but not a very good product. Poor quality, and workmanship. Does not fit together well, and I had to make some mechanical adjustments just to get it to close and lock ....right out of the box. I do not feel comfortable or secure leaving a handgun inside.
