There are a lot of spacious "family" tents out there. But we guarantee you won't find one that offers this much room and weatherproof durability in one easy-to-setup package. In fact, this "home-away-from- home" wasn't just built for the weekend getaway. It's loaded with high-performance extras that make it a true four-season workhorse. During fair weather, the floorless screen room is ideal for bug-free food preparation and eating. When foul-weather threatens, simply unroll the portion of the fly that covers the screen room and continue dining in dry comfort. The screen room includes a large zippered door that can be staked down in the front, so you can drive your ATV under it to get it out of the weather. An interior zippered door provides access to the main tent from the screen room. The full-coverage fly is constructed of tough, 75-denier UV-resistant polyester with a 1,500mm-rated waterproof coating for reliable protection in extreme weather conditions. End doors on the fly can be converted to awnings with adjustable height poles (sold separately). The 210-denier polyester oxford tent floor is extremely abrasion resistant and features a 1,500mm polyurethane coating to keep out ground moisture. The super-strong 1"-diameter aluminum frame is easy to set up and is engineered to withstand heavy winds. Criss-crossing "hurricane" straps on the inside create an internal truss system for added strength. Multiple reflective guyouts and heavy-duty steel stakes keep the tent securely in place when the wind whips up. Internal organizer panels keep necessities within easy reach. Family Outfitter Convertible Tent, October 16, 2009
    By Kansascampers from Pleasanton, KS

"Good, well built tent. Totally waterproof through 5 inches of rain over 5 days. Solid frame and guy-outs. Not warm though, screen windows in the sleeping quarters need zip up covers to stop drafts during winter camping. End doors are difficult to get in and out of with the rain fly zipped down because the screen door zips in the middle and the rainfly doors zip on the sides. We are returning it for a larger sleeping area tent like the XWT."

    Great tent, September 6, 2009
    By megalyth from Northwest Ohio

"This was my family's first real tent. We wanted the bathtub floor in the sleeping area, the excellent rain cover, the sturdy rods, and the very nice screened-in area.
There are tons of windows (that only open/shut from the outside) for excellent ventilation. We've been through some pretty rough rainy weather and came out dry and warm, as well as some hot afternoons and stayed cool and comfortable.
The doors to the sleeping area have screens and a separate privacy material which is a welcome touch! Use one or the other, or both.
The floor of the screened area is open to the ground, so buy a tarp - and keep the tarp from extending beyond the rain cover or you'll have an pond in your screened area come morning. We store things in that area, so keep stuff off the ground!
The doors are great. You can even buy some rods and rope to make a covered porch (or two) from the rain cover.
Size is nice. We bought the smaller and sleep two adults and two small children comfortably. I do wish I'd bought the larger one, though, for when the kids get bigger. I recommend 2 people for setup and take down, but I've done it on my own several times.
It's very good looking. Lightweight for its size. Sturdy zippers. Built like a tank. Comes with a nice storage bag. Pay close attention to how you unpack it the first time, instructions are incredibly sparse, and getting it packed that way again is near impossible. Lots of storage pockets inside. Tons of features.
Downsides include fraying of the privacy material around the zippers, lack of instructions, and lack of privacy covers on the windows in the sleeping area if the rain cover is off.

Good but not 4 season, August 13, 2009
    By WyomingPat from Cheyenne, WY

"Don't know what the seasons are where the manufacturer lives but here in Wyoming I would not call it a 4 season tent. It is easy to erect for such a large tent. I only need help putting the fly on as it is not a 1 man task in the slightest breeze. I am sure it will stand up to most weather Wyoming can throw at it from May to September but I cannot picture it in the Snowy mountains in February. It is great value for money but realistically you will pay more for a smaller TRUE 4 season tent.

It arrived 1 day after shipping on standard delivery! I have erected it for testing and anxiously await thunderstorms to test its weather proofness.

I am using it as a base camp tent for trail riding.

4 season here means it must withstand 60MPH winds and 3 feet of snow or more!

smaller of 2 available models, July 26, 2009
    By Krykl from Vermont

"We bought the smaller of the 2 models of this tent, which was rated for 4 to 6 people. As with ALL tents, divide the body count by 2 and round down to an even number for comfortable use.

The tent was exceptional for 2 people using a queen sized air mattress, their gear and two folding chairs in the screened area. I would expect the larger to be the same for 4.

It went up like a dream, kept us dry AND well ventilated in often heavy rain during the week we first used it. We were at a gathering and Cableas should be getting at least 2 orders based on others' reactions to the tent.

I've tented all ways from the superlight through larger back packing tents and canoeing tents. This was my first car camping tent. It's nice to get it right the first time.

To make it perfect would require the ability to close the windows from the inside as has been mentioned in other reviews.

There simply is no other choice.

    Happy trails.

    family tent, July 24, 2009
    By gcamp from MA

"The tent is very easy to set up and is a sturdy and well ventulated. My only complaint is the tent part is small and I don't see how you can fit 6-8 people. I have 3 children and they are small and we had to use 2 tents to camp. If you can afford the larger one I would suggest it."

    Outstanding Tent, June 1, 2009
By M9211 from Prescott Valley, AZ

"Cabela's did a great job in developing this large family tent. There's plenty of room for the cots in the sleeping area as well as plenty of room for our two tables, chairs and extra gear in the screen room. Combine this with the heavy duty aluminum frame and full converage, no leaking waterproof rain fly and you've got yourself one tough tent. They thoroughly thought this through for those of us who enjoy quality when it comes to camping. Thanks Cabela's!"

    Great Tent a+++++, June 1, 2009
    By surfish from Lancaster,Pa

"I purchased this tent a few weeks ago in order to break my family into camping. My wife has never camped and we have 2 little boys. So i wanted to get a tent that would not scare them away from the idea of tent camping. I spent about a month researching different tents and finally decided on this one. So i set it up in the back yard to get the hang of the setup. I have to say its rather easy to set up if you take the time to read the directions and do it correctly. It does take 2 people but you only need to 2nd person when you put up the poles the rest you dont need a hand with. So this tent was set up in my back yard and we were supposed to get a few days of rain. did we ever, 3 days straight, the tent didnt have a single leak. The day i was going to take it down we got a crazy thinderstorm 50 mph winds and driving rain. The tent took it all. I thought there would be water in it for sure after that storm but there wasnt any. Redonkulous!!! Get the big one. Its worth the extra money. It fits 2 queen size inflateable beds no problem. Buy this and you wont be dissapointed."

A rip in the seams, May 18, 2009
    By expertcamper from Iowa

"I like my tent a bunch, but when putting it up the first time I did have a rip in the seam between the cabin area and the screen room. I find that a bit distressing. I was careful to not stretch things too far,but I wonder if the rip will grow. I would like it to be replaced but find it hard to believe that Cabela's will do that.
Must admit that now I leary about about other quality issues.

the best tent ever made, September 24, 2008
    By Anonymous from hudson, nh

"my wife and i wanted to get a new tent, so i reviewed evey tent there is and then i found the outfitter tent. ok this tent is awsome it went up in 30 min the first time and now it takes 20min. you need 2 people. but the poles are very sturdy, i thought that a little wind would blow it over for looking at the pics of it but no way this thing is stong, and there are so many differnt combos you can do with it. the room in the big size tent was more then enough for 2 cots a nightstand and our bags in the screen room a 4' table 2 chairs cooler and a dog crate was still not that much we were still comfortable i could go on and on but trust me you will love it"

"Only compliants is you can not get to windows from this inside of tent. The 10x-14x tent I have is a little small for a family of 4 but is ok. Sleeping area holds a queen and full air matress but very tight. The screen area is great, but snug to cook in. overall very satisfied"

Family Convertable Tent, June 30, 2008
    By NDDF from North Dakota

"I have had the tent for about four weeks and have set up three times - you need two people to set it up and it takes about 20 to 30 minutes, with some practice I'll probably get it down to 15 to 20 minutes. Taking it down in such a manner that you keep it clean and dry takes longer than setting it up but this is true for any tent. Most important! Spend the extra money for the larger tent if you plan to use to cots in the sleeping area. I originally purchased the smaller tent, and had to upgrade to the larger one because my two (large) outfitter cots would not fit in the smaller tent. If you get the smaller tent and plan to sleep two or more people, go with floor sleeping arrangement. The larger tent definitely has a huge footprint but it's not any harder to set up an extra space is worth it - -providing your campsite has space. Structural design of the tent is good the poles are sturdy and they bend appropriately, set up design makes sense and is not complicated - takes a little elbow grease to get the poles in place. Hardest part is all the stakes but again this is the same for any large tent. The screened porch design with a separated sleeping room is a good design, another plus is the doors are in all the right places. The downside to this tent is that it's fairly expensive compared to some other tents. A bit pricey in my opinion."

    Perfect tent, May 30, 2008
    By neilb from Asheville, NC

"I have been shopping around for a good, large family tent for some time now. I had narrowed it down to this Cabelas tent and the Kelty Green River 6. The Kelty came very highly recomended by the sales person at a local gear store(even though they didn't carry that model.) I purchased the Kelty @ another store for about half price from the msrp(and more than half the price of this Cabelas tent.) I set the Kelty up at home, slept in it that night with my wife and 2 year old boy. My impression was that it was adequate for getting back into camping as a family.
Even though the Kelty felt adequate, I couldn't get this Cabelas tent off my mind. With the safety net of Cabelas return policy, I purchased the Cabela's convertible Family tent just to see what it had to offer. Boy am I glad I did. Everything about this tent tells me that it was designed and engineered by people who actually know what quality and convinence mean in a product. I set it up @ 1 am after working a 12 hour shift at the hospital and it was a piece of cake. Most reviews of tents of this size say that two people are required for set up. That is not the case for this tent.
The amount of screens in this tent made it feel like the ac was on. With the rain fly in place, it feels very much like a four season tent. This being said, the fly sits a good space away from the tent for decent ventilation even when buttoned down. The hurricaine straps and guy lines lead me to believe that this tent could withstand some pretty brutal weather. The material is of a higher quality than many other tents I have considered. At 6'2" I can walk throughout the tent and near the sides without touching the ceiling. I really appreciate the near vertical walls of the screen room; this affords a good amount of useable space. The divider door has a screen and a solid door, this is something that I was unable to ascertain from looking at it on line.
I am very particular about the gear that I buy. I expect quality and durability when I spend money on outdoor gear. This tent has, thus far, met and exceeded all of my expectations. I must say I felt almost giddy once I had it set up and explored it for awhile. This tent is truly a case of "you get what you pay for!" Though there are cheaper tents that are adequate; do yourself (and family) a favor, splurge a little for this tent and you will be glad that you did!!!

    Awsome tent!, May 21, 2008
    By grandmalisa

"This tent was even better than I expected. I did a trial run and set it up in my yard with my 13-year-old daughter helping. The directions were very easy to understand and attached to the tent. Next time it will be much faster, but it was not hard. I am amazed at how roomy it is inside. Plenty of room for table and chairs in the screen room. This is an extremely sturdy tent and really takes the wind. I took it down by myself and had it packed up and in the car in 20 minutes."

Cabela's Family Outfitter Convertible Tent, September 10, 2007

"I was looking for a straight sided tent that would fold back a little so that I could cook with a little wind break but not smoke up the inside of the tent. This tent has proven itself to be just what I wanted and then some. The wind straps on the inside of the tent make this tent one of the most stable tents I have ever been in and with the one end that folds back I don't get the whole tent smoked up."

Not as big as hoped, August 28, 2007
    By RoughRidersAK from Juneau, AK

"While this tent is sturdy AND waterproof, the interior of the tent is not as big as hoped. This tent will only accomodate 2 Outfitter XL Cots and this doesnt leave much room for other things.

We had hoped it would be large enough for three cots for me and my boys (one Outfitter XL and two smaller 30" wide cots for the kids) and our dog. With the three cots there is almost no room to move around.

The screen room is a great idea and the ability to cover it for foul weather is an excellent feature. Front and side entrances for screen room. The problem is that the Cabelas Camp Kitchen will not fit anywhere in the screen room as it is too tall to fit against the side walls and too wide to back up against the interior wall.

Would be a great tent for people who do not use cots or camp kitchens.

Big tent but...., August 24, 2007
    By TexasCampers from Dale, TX

"We bought one of these at the Buda store in June as we like to camp and want to have plenty of room in the tent.
It is big and does does take time to set up, and appears to be strong enough for most conditions.
However, there are some features in the tent that appear to have no purpose, like zippers and velco straps above the windows.
And not being able to adjust or close the side windows from inside the tent make it a real pain if a sudden storm comes up.

Great, Big Tent, May 22, 2007
    By chamcc2 from GEORGIA

"This tent came exactly as promised, large enough for a family of four and relatively easy to assemble. The instructions are good, and are attached to the tent so you cannot lose them. I would recommend two people when erecting the tent, it is close to impossible by yourself. With some practice, you and a friend can fully erect the tent and have it staked within 15 minutes. It has plenty of room and a good overall value."

    Cabela's Outfitter Tent, March 19, 2007
By Daddynim from Incheon, South Korea

"The Cabela Outfitter tent is a decent tent, especially if you have more than 4 or five people sleeping in it. As we camp all year-round in South Korea, we have a chance to see how things perform, especially in the cold (-8 degrees Celcius or lower). The outfitter is COLD as there is no way to stop the wind from coming under the fly, because the fly doesn't go all the way to the ground. Also, the inner tent is unusally big, and seems to take up at least 1/2 of the entire tent space, which is a lot. It's a nice tent, but other companys' tents have more space, more windows, and are wider."
