Triumph works great!,April 18, 2009
By Spoofyfrom W. Pennsylvania
"I bought the rod as a replacement for a new rod that had the top snap after two outings. It's a 7ft 6in 4wt and the intended use is small stream, heavy brush, trout fishing.
I matched it with a 5wt weight forward line (a little heavy - but with short line lenths it loads easy on the 4wt rod, and roll and snap casts just fine).
Accuracy - the best rod that I have. Works great around brush, overhanging trees, and stumps. It's handled small to mid-size trout just fine.
Would I use it where I had lot's of room and needed to have long casts, or where I expected to land steelhead. Nope.
Small Streams, short casts, accurate and easy to carry is it's sweet spot."

"i bought this item and it worked well for me. everything was smooth during casting and landing fish. i didn't have to worry about anything, just let the rod do the work. but i am already looking to upgrade because it does not feel like the potential rod for me."

I like it--very much. A good match for me.,July 8, 2008
By WinFlyfrom Research Triangle, NC
"I bought this rod (8.5 ft, 5wt) to pair with a Sage 1201 reel and a weight-forward floating line. I expect to fish for trout, small bass, and panfish. I'm new to flyfishing and wanted a decent rod, one I'd use in years to come. Since trout streams are several hours away, though, I didn't want to spend so much I'd feel like I wasted my money if I only fished them once or twice a year. The rod? I like the action a lot. It seems to match my casting style, which a friend describes as having a slow rhythm. I can make nice roll casts with it; my friend, a more experienced flyfisherman, also found he made better roll casts than he'd ever made before. What would make this a 5-star? In addition to more experience on my part so I could compare better, a rod case and a lifetime warranty. So, for another $50 or so I probably should have stepped up to the St Croix Reign. Next time, I'll know. That said, I really like this rod and am very satisfied with it."

good rod from ST. Croix,April 10, 2008
By mtredneckfrom Billings, MT
"I have a 8'5" 4 piece Triumph in 5 wt. I really like this rod for casting on small to medium sized streams and rivers. it is very accurate and is plesent to cast. it has a good amout of backbone for fighting larger sized fish and dosn't overpower the little guys. I would recomend this rod for someone that is starting out in fly fishing or is looking for an inexpensive rod to keep in a vehicle so they are never without a rod."

Disappointed in CT,May 30, 2007
By SherpaJosh
"I heard only good things about St.Croix rods, unfortunately this particular rod performed less than stellar. I had an unfortunate accident with my previous 8' 4wt. I did some reading and talking to St.Croix owners and went with the Triumph as an economical replacement. What I found first time out with it was that the rod did not feed line smoothly or consistantly, also this pole does not like to roll cast. Granted the pole is only a 4wt but it lacks the backbone for consistant casting and slightly larger streamers in general. Action is acceptable, albiet a little whippy. Overall it's a fly rod that worked as a temporary replacement and now as an extra pole in case of emergency or a pole to teach a first timer on."
