Great,July 7, 2009
By Bearfromwashingtonfrom Kent, WA
"I have had this tent four years now. Let me tell you, we are hard on our tents. During deer season, it was 20 degrees outside with winds holding steady at 20mph and gusting 35mph. Tent did fine. Took it fishing where it was -4 outside, with 2 plus feet of snow. The tent did fine. I have been in major rain storms and we stayed dry. I have the 8 man and it holds a queen size air mattress and two twins for the kids, all our gear and plus the dog. The floors feel weak, but haven't torn. This tent is a great investment and I will replace it if I ever need to. My family loves this tent."

Alaskan Guide Tent,June 8, 2009
By Avidcamper07from Nebraska
"This tent is excellent!! I was extremely proud and happy we bought this tent especially after this last weekend. We went camping with a group of friends and the wind came up gusting to 30+ mph. Our tent didn't move and we barely noticed the wind. One of of the other tents broke a pole and ripped a hole in the material, 2 other tents were moving so much that they kept folding over, bending and hitting the people sleeping inside. Again, our Alaskan guide stood up to the wind without any problems and didn't move!!! I would highly recommend this tent to anyone!!!!!"

Nice Tent,November 19, 2009
By Hunter907from Near Dot Lake, Alaska
"After a really rough plane ride,we landed safely, and found a dry spot fairly level spot to set the tent up. It was dark by then and making the mistake of never setting the tent up prior to our trip I thought we might have to sleep in our bags under a tarp. I was wrong the tent is easy to set up,it took us maybe twenty-five minutes. We were on an island known for really bad weather and extreme winds. Which we found to be true. The wind raged for three days and the tent held up with no problems. The only issue we had with the tent was the knots that the guy ropes came tied in,we had real problems getting them untied in a quick way . I will coil them up and secure them with rubber bands to solve that problem before I take it out again, and should have before we went this time. We couldnt have asked for a better tent for this extreme hunt!"

"Outstanding! This tent was really...I mean REALLY put to the test in the Northern Cascades. I did anticipate some rain, but then the snow, wind, and down pour hit! All the cabin tents were being taken down or forced down. I was a bit nervious but my Alaska Guild Tent took the extreme weather like it was in a KOA campground on a sunny aftergnoon. Thanks Cabelas."

One Month on the Road,November 19, 2009
By Motorgod
"With the knowlege I would be riding the motorcycle and camping each night for a month, I spent months preparing for the 4 Corners trip (Key West, Fl to SanDiego, Ca. to Port Angeles, Wa. to Madawaska, Me. and back home to Tampa, Fl.), After much thought trying to figure out what tent would be best suited for the varing weather conditions I chose the Alaskan Guide 4. While it was a bit more than I wanted to pay, I had a gut feeling to spend the money and get the right tent. Looking back I know I made the right choice. From temperatures over 110 to the low 30's, from the dry of the desert to pouring rain in Oregon. The tent performed without a complaint. I found that in the heat, the tent vented well even with the fly on. In the pouring rain not a drop leaked in. The only problem I had was that I had to crawl in and out of the vestibule. Seeing the new model, that issue has been resolved.
Setup of the tent was relatively quick and easy once I got used to the drill. I would recommend practicing the setup and take down before heading out. Trying to set this tent up for the first time in the dark would not be my idea fun.
My wife met me in Seattle and spent a week of the trip in the tent also. We found there was enough room for a queen sized air mattress and all of our necessary clothing. My wife loves to camp but she also likes to be comfortable. She was. The storage areas on the sides of the tent were a brilliant idea. Cell phones, keys, flash lights, you name it we put them in there. They could be easily found and used when needed.
We liked the tent so much that we will be purchasing the larger 6 person model for use on camping trips where we keep the tent set up at a base camp and ride from and to our camp site each day on our adventures. She likes the extra room for the other niceties."

Great tent but small,November 2, 2009
By HBhunter27from Huntington Beach, CA
"I used this tent for a hunting trip in Southern Utah recently. It was in the 20s at night and snowed several times. It was also very windy one day. The tent did great in the different conditions.
I would give it 5 stars except that it was pretty small. I got the 6-man tent thinking that it would be good for 2 cots. It worked, but it was a little cramped, especially with my Cabela's XL cot. The octagonal shape makes it tough to line up the cots. We put them in a "V" formation which made it feel like there was wasted space on the sides. I think that I would be completely satisfied with the 8-man tent.
I'm 6'3" and I could just stand up in the middle. Again, the 8-man is a little taller.
The rain fly was great in the rain and snow (the water beaded off) and the tent barely moved in the strong winds when we staked it down. The adjustable tie downs were nice after the rain to "re-tighten" the tie-downs.
We had very little noise in the high winds and no problems with leaks from the rain or snow. We did get some condensation one night after the snow when it was very cold but it wasn't too bad.
The stakes that come with the tent work well and it is pretty easy to set up.
I would recommend this product to anyone with the caveat to make sure its big enough!"

"I have owned this 4 person tent for 10 yrs, before that had the 8 person. This tent holds up well, has never leaked. Spending more than 30 days a year in the mountains I understand what it takes to be comfortable. I can highly recommend this tent to all, just get the alum poles. Only con is its weight. Certainly to heavy to backpack, but horsepacking works well."

More than I expected,October 10, 2009
By nealartfrom Cape May County, NJ
"After owning a Kelty Green River 6 tent for the past 4 years I decided it was time to get a new tent that would resolve some of the problems that I had with the Kelty tent and also fit our camping needs better( see my Green River 6 review ). After much shopping around I kept coming back to Cabela’s Alaskan Guide dome tent but due to the hexagonal shape and the lack of detailed information or pictures I still was not convinced that it would fit our needs so I contacted customer service online who gave me some additional information. Still not sold, I decided to visit Cabela’s Hamburg PA store as a side trip on a camping weekend. I figured that since it was their tent it would be out on display where I could look inside and get a good feel for its quality. When I got there I found the tent on display but sadly it was hanging on a second story railing with no way to even see inside it (windows and doors closed ). Disappointed, I mulled over the decision some more. 3 months later and a camping trip near, I finally bit the bullet and placed an order for the 8 man tent with aluminum poles and an optional floor liner even though I thought that for a tent, it was kind of pricey. I figured that it could always be returned if I was unhappy with it. Well, the tent arrived in less than a week of ordering and, eager to discover if I had made the right decision, I looked to put it up right away. When I unzipped the carrying bag and saw the straps that held the tent rolled together I knew immediately that this was going to be much more than any ordinary tent. I’ll admit that trying to stand the tent up the first time was a bit tricky and when I saw one of my aluminum poles bending quite severely I figured that I had just killed my new tent and I would have to get a new pole. Happily the poles are much more forgiving than I expected and no harm was done to them. Now I have the knack and haven’t had any other problems putting the tent up. After all the poles, clips and straps were in place and before putting the rain fly on or stakes in the ground I was pleased to discover that this tent is as tight as a trampoline unlike my Green River 6. I look forward to going camping with it very soon and I will write another review afterwards. I have high hopes that it will perform well for our needs.
Here are answers to some questions I had about the tent that I could only know for sure once I possessed one.
The tent is not a true hexagon. On the 8 man tent, the three sides with doors or windows measure 81 inches on the outside and the 3 blank walls measure 86 inches on the outside.
In a tight arrangement I can fit 3 GI style camping cots in this tent. One by the window wall, one by the window/door wall, and one coming straight out between the two. This leaves a good 5 feet from the ends of the cots to the front door where you could put two camping chairs if stuck inside on a rainy day.
The 3 screened vents on the roof of the tent, though small, cannot be closed. Have not decided if this is good or bad yet.
The 3 sides of the front vestibule of the fly can be rolled up all the way to the tent pole that supports the opening for the entrance to keep the vestibule out of the way if you don’t want to use it.
The floor liner fits nice and tight inside the tent."

Alaskan Guide model tent (6 man, aluminum poles,October 7, 2009
By sixrivers
"We, as fishing guides in Alaska, have used these tents for several years with the confidence that they will stand up to the harsh conditions. We focus on chasing wild rainbow trout while drifting 45 - 50 miles of river in the course of 7 to 10 days. Obviously these tents see a lot of set up and break down scenarios! We have never experienced a show stopping problem. While we welcome the new design that includes an attached vestibule for extra gear protection without adding extra weight, we feel the " weather strip" material along the two zippers to be inadequate. Our clients experienced jammed zippers often enough that we considered using the velcro closures alone. Given all the great features such as being able to stand up and dress inside while it's pouring and blowing outside, I can hardly call the vestibule zipper issue more than an inconvenience."

Achieved expectations,October 6, 2009
By trouttrapfrom Citrus Heights, CA
"I bought the Alaskan Guide model 4 person based on high remarks from this review board. I wanted a wind and rain proof tent. I read some people had difficulty with pitching the tent and rain-fly and that the ceiling windows were too open or at least the user had no option to close them. Other opinions were just the opposite though. So, with all the excellent reviews I went ahead a bought the tent. I first set it up in the backyard before our trip. Without devouring the directions, we pitched the 4 man tent in 15 minutes and installed the rain-fly in 10. On the second try we pitched it in 10 minutes and the rain-fly only took 5. With two people it went really well. We did not install any of the guy lines. I think this tent will take duo effort to pitch if you don’t want to get frustrated and angry at the manufacturer. Speed and effort pitching the tent wasn’t a problem. We bought the fiberglass poles. After the tent stood erect for a couple of days, some of the poles were slightly bent. I don’t know if that will be an issue later on. Maybe aluminum is better in that regard. On the following weekend we camped at Lake Tahoe. Forecast for the weekend was wind to 25 mph and snow. A great opportunity to test the opinions of others, the tent withstood the wind like a brick house. When the weather changed to snow, the wind stopped. We had 4 inches of snow and hail overnight. The fly repelled the snow like water off a ducks back. The full fly is really important for a weather proof tent. I see a lot of tents without this feature. The floor withstood the melting snow the next day – no leaks. At first I thought the open air vents at the ceiling would be a problem. Then after reading countless expert opinions on other kinds of tents, they said ventilation is important to resist condensation inside the tent. I didn’t think condensate would be an issue with two people, but who wants it to rain inside the tent, right? I wouldn’t ask Cabela’s to make a tent with more ceiling vents, but I do understand why they are there and why you can’t close them off. With two people a mild film of condensation formed on the tent door with the fly on during the snow fall, but only on the tent door. Without the fly no condensate formed. Without the vents we would have been wet and cold. So venting is more important than I thought. If you read a lot of tent reviews, you will notice venting is frequently advertised. If I had to change something about this tent, I would remove the tie-down hooks on the fly and move them to the tents base to hook the fly. The hooks tend to grab every pole and loose loop when putting the fly on, which adds time to the installation and will be a problem if you are in a downpour."

"Great tent. Just used it on my remote fly out moose hunt. Roomy tent worked great for 2 guys but could fit more. Large vestibule. Only down side is you need 2 people to set it up. May be able to do it with one, but it would be a pain. A bit heavy for a tent at 23 lbs if you are concerned about weight. Just stuck it in the cargo pod of my super cub and it fit fine."

Little Small,September 2, 2009
By AlalaskaBobfrom Eagle River,Alaska
"The design of this tent is great. We took ours on a Kodiak Island hunt and even without using the extra tie downs found it great in 50+ MPH winds. The only problem we had was that the 4 man tent is pretty small for 2 men with cots. I would not think of using this tent with even 3 people if you plan to be comfortable. You could squeeze people in here but on a multiple day hunt as well as having to stay in all day due to weather it is just to small."

Guide with large vestibule,August 27, 2009
By padreswordsfrom Shreveport Louisiana
"I bought this tent (8 man) over 10 years ago because of the high winds and blowing rain on Lake Fork in Texas. This tent is far superior to any tent I have ever owned. I suggest the addition of the largest vestibule offered as it allows the user to put up a table with chairs and still have room for packs, rods and reels, coolers etc. It is extremely well made and will not leak! It stands up the the driving rain like no other tent I have ever owned. I highly recommend this tent for families or even for just two people as I did. The large model built for 8 is huge and wonderful for two."

Alaskan Tent was very sturdy and did not leak!,August 16, 2009
By Anonymousfrom Tonawanda, NY
"For several years at the big airshow in Oshkosh, WI we have left our tents in the dumpster when leaving because they didn't hold up in the wind and rain. So we took a survey of other campers last year, and this Alaskan tent was recommended. We bought the 6-man/woman tent (which was perfect for the 2 of us with our queen size air mattress) and the optional floor liner. Except for the fact that my husband and I were clumsy at putting it up in the wind (but got it up just before the rain started), the tent was wonderful! We never had to hold it up in the wind and rain. It held it's own. :-) No leaks of any kind whatsoever. When we were packing it up to leave, I found a puddle and thought it had leaked. It turned out my husband had knocked over a beer the night before. So the tent had no leaks. We were very happy with it and brought it home to use again next year at AirVenture!"
