It may float, but that's about it.,August 30, 2007

"I would not recommend this radio to anyone who needs to transmit more than maybe a mile line of site.
I have a 21' bowrider and wanted a radio I could use to contact other boaters. I purchased this radio and the quality is nice. It is light and well built.
The bad thing is that it just doesn't have the antenna length or transmit power to be useful in 90% of situations.
I was in a cove 5 miles from another boater and could not hear him transmit (at our marina). I know this because I could hear my buddy talking to him that was only 100' away from me, but none of the return. Later when the boater arrived, I asked where he was, and he was leaving his slip in our marina which was about 4-5 miles away.
DO NOT RELY ON THIS RADIO FOR EMERGENCIES!!!
I returned it and am going with a fixed mount an 8' antenna."

Icom IC-M34,July 30, 2007

"GREAT... For what I use it for. It is not a replacement for a boat mounted VHF, but it does exactly what they say it will do...it floats! I had about 2 days when my daughter dropped it over the side of the boat. It sank, and I thought it was a gonner! A couple seconds later, it came to the surface! No Problems after cleaning it off and using the vibrator to shake the water out of the speaker area. We'll see how it does down the road, but for now, it performs EXACTLY like I anticipated! - Tight Lines!"

"Dropped my M-34 radio over the side of the boat and it popped right back up to the surface. Lost a few radios that way. Not this one. Still works fine after being in the water."
