Great Hoist for Overhead Storage,
November 8, 2009
By ChrisfromNJ
from NW New Jersey
|
"Picked this up to try and suspend my fiberglass pickup cover when not in use. Easy installation on a finished ceiling, guess my studs were running in the right direction. Put the straps arond the top and raised it up. I can now back the truck in the garage and put on or remove the cover without assistance, a big plus as I use the truck bed for my ATV. I figure if I can install this just about anyone can. Thanks Cabelas."

Most Appropriate for Kayaks,
September 11, 2009
By Grummancanoe

"The hoist would be best used for kayaks and light canoes. It is rated at 120 pounds (a heavy canoe) but the polyprop cord it comes with does not seem strong enough to handle maximum rated weight over the long term. No problem with a kayak. The metal parts (brackets and hardware) are sturdy, well constructed, and easily installed. They will fit over common lumber in the rafters of a shed or garage. The design has one problem. Users will probably want to install the hoist to hang their kayak lengthways from the rafters in a rectangular garage, shed, or boathouse. Once you slip the brackets over the rafters and bolt them into place you will see that the pulleys are aligned to run the length of the rafter instead of perpendicular - at a 90 degree angle - to the rafters. This is the the opposite of what you would expect them to do. It means the hubs of the pulley wheels end up facing one another and the pulley cord has to turn a 90 degree angle as it enters each wheel, which leads to binding under load. To compensate, I installed two 2" x 4" boards perpendicular to the rafters and connecting three of them using common steel supports and deck screws. I mounted the hoists on the connecting timbers and it all lined up logically and functionally. Now, I can walk my long kayak into the narrow garage bay and hoist it up. No need to turn it sideways as mandated by the design of the hoists. Good product. Odd design."

"Now I have floor space. I have purchased two of these items and couldn't be happier. A big plus is the self locking system that lets you get another grip rather than having to do a hand over hand lift. Also, your Customer Service is A+"

Cabela's Canoe Hoist System Letdown,

By Jim444

"Everything went well till I hoisted up the canoe. I have a 10 foot ceiling in my garage and with the lifting hooks all the way up and the straps in place, my canoe was only 5 foot off the floor. I was hoping for at least 7 feet. Very inconvenient to work around."

"Actually bought this to hang a convertible hard-top in the garage over the car. Nicely built--solid construction and ropes, easy enough to install, big enough lag bolts that I'm not worried about the whole thing ever crashing down. Pleased with the purchase."

It does work,
September 1, 2009
By DesertRatRon

"This devise was VERY difficult to install. It would be easy on an open beam garage, but since mine is finished finding the rafters was not easy. Since the rafters ran at right angles to the direction I wanted to hang the hoist, I ended up having to attach a 2 X 3 beam at right angles to the rafters.
All in all the product works and if you need a heavy duty hoist to lift a heavy canoe, storage box, etc. this will do the job nicely. Just expect to put in a half day installation."

Works well - as advertised.,
August 3, 2009
By PonderosaDoug

"The hoist mounts and hoists well (I lift a double sea kayak, a single kayak and a pontoon boat.. max around 85 lbs. Only caution is to be sure and hold both ropes of the hoist system: if you try to adjust one end height by pulling only one, that end can come cascading down... along with the item being lifted.
I would - hand have - recommended it to a friend."

"Easy to install.. And from reading the reviews already given, I agree that the ropes could be better quality. But outside of that it's a great system. We've found that it's not easy to hoist up with one person.. much easier with 2. It keeps the kayak up and out of the way, seems strong and secure."

Kayak storage system,
July 29, 2009
By RailRunner
from Sacramento, CA

"This system is easy to install and use. It works as well as I had anticipated. The support strap is quite long and the kayaks were much lower than desired. A suggestion, provide more than one location to hook onto to make the staps shorter. Fortunately, my wife sews and was able to shorten the staps. Everything is great now."

Kayak Hoist,
July 21, 2009
By wadingdeep
from Northern California
|
"I have one of these installed in my garage for our Tandem Kayak. It is easy to install and easy to use. One note is that it is a single pulley on each end so it takes some muscle to hoist a 55 pound kayak. I was hoping that my wife could lift it herself but it takes too much pull. The lock sysytem is positive and quick so if you get in trouble controlling the weight up or down you can lock up the ropes quickly. Great product. I am ordering another for my fishing kayak."

"This is a first class hoist system for your boat. It is heaver than some competitors giving some confidence when installed over a car. Easy to install, but no instructions provided. No additional trip to the hardware store because everything is provided. I placed two additiopnal straps in case someone accidently released the hoist cam."

Kayak Hoist,
June 19, 2009
By 1havingfun

"This hoist worked great for what I wanted it to do. Store my tandem kayak in my garage above my porsche. I installed it myself with no problems. I also utilized two eyebolts set into my rafter, along with soft rope and spring clips to loop the kayak on each end and click into the eyebolt. I did this only because I wanted the feel good security with my kayak being stored above my Porsche. Really not necessay. Very happy with this product and the price."

Kayak Hoist System,
May 27, 2009
By MrsJS
from PA
|
"Very happy with system. Quick and easy to install. Was a bit frustrated at first on two areas: 1) The factory assembly had one of the lines feeding through a pully wheel incorrectly which was easy to untie and refeed, had I not seen the error I would have had a hard time operating the pully and 2) Not being one to read assembly instructions completely it took me a few awkward attempts to finally understand that to get the kayak to lower I had to hold one line/pully tight (releasing the pully hinge) while giving slack to the second line/pully to get one side of the kayak to lower then alternately hold the other line/pully tight and giving slack to the second line to lower the other side of the kayak. Once we figured this out, it was a smooth process."

canoe hoist,

By Patriot223

"I put this hoist up in a pumphouse with unfinished ceilings. It went up fine by myself. However trying to pull the load of a Old Town Guide 147 and a Dagger kayak inside the canoe, I found it difficult to pull up to the ceiling. I am fixing that problem by putting a hand crank on the wall. The only other concern I have is the quality of rope used, but it works and time will tell if the rope holds up. I am thinking about getting another one."
