KDC-202MR owners: prepare to be disappointed,October 4, 2009
By MichaelAWfrom Austin, Texas
"I bought the KDC-232MR as a replacement for my failing KDC-202MR in my '82 Jeep CJ8. My KDC-202MR was the only one that could put up with the dampness, dust, vibration, cold, heat, and occasional light water splashing (assuming power was quickly disconnected). In summers, my Jeep was stored outdoors with only a bikini top. My KDC-202MR lasted six years, and still works OK if you don't mind the occasional CD cut-out or error code. This is why I bought the KDC-232MR.
The KDC-202MR came with a wireless remote, which is handy for CJs - the radio is on the other side of all the shifters and requires a non-trivial reach to operate. The KDC-232MR's remote is optional, hard-wired, and does not work with the KDC-202MR remote.
The KDC-202MR displayed both time and frequency (or time and track information) simultaneously. This is nice in a CJ, as few had built in clocks. With the KDC-232MR, you must chose one or the other with no scrolling option between the two.
I know this isn't a surprise, but why is the only model in this series that does NOT support MP3? Again, just another disappointment.
The handling of bumps, etc... as far as CD skipping is concerned is about on par with the KDC-202MR. I would think that the next radio in your series would be an improvement.
The final disappointment is with the control knob that is now used to change frequency and frequency bands (AM/FM). This will become an annoyance if used often, especially on less-than-smooth roads (or any rough surface, really). Your arm will be nudged up and down, causing you to shift frequency bands rather than frequency (or vice-versa).
There were some good points. First, I did not have to work with a new connector. The old connector is compatible. I installed the new bracket, but only because I had taken the old one in and out several times and it was worn. If you haven't done this, your old bracket will work just fine.
Second, I do prefer the volume control knob on the KDC-232MR to the the up/down buttons that were there on the KDC-202MR."

"I purchased the stereo/speaker combo. I don't like how the stereo buttons and controls are laid out. The stereo and speakers do perform well though. This stereo in paticular gets much better FM reception than my previous one I purchased from Cabalas. (Aquatronics I believe)"
