These are the best ..,October 20, 2009
By OldColoradoMountainGoatfrom Teller County, Colorado
"I have NEVER submitted a review on any product. I searched a long time for boots that would provide support for my poor old abused ankles and knees. I needed a light boot, flexible, neutral motion, and superior shock absorbtion and traction. I recommend these boots without reservation. I can hike and climb for hours in complete comfort."

not good for steep uphill climbs,May 24, 2009
By Salmonking
"Good boots for flatland hiking, but as other people have said they are downright painful if you are climbing a steep slope. Every time I climb anything steep in these boots, I get huge painful blisters on both heels. And that is with quality wool hiking socks and sock liners. I thought the problem would go away after breaking them in, but over a year later I have the same problem every time. Guess I'll just use them for hikes over flat ground and buy something else for the mountains."

Great boot Lousey Vibram sole,December 15, 2008
By cliffjumperfrom Vancouver Island
"After 6 months of wearing every second or third Sunday, the Vibram soles simply started tearing-out in chunks.
The boot is superb, the design and construction are excellent. Fit and support, torsional, lateral and ankle support, are excellent for this boot design. Love the "lace-to-toes".
The sole is terrible. Vibram needs to give their head a shake.
My family are all complaining about Vibram soles these days in other good boot brands. The plastic needs a lot more carbon in it... back to the old materials, and construction-integrity!
I most highly recommend this boot for use on terrain without sharp rocks. A very good packing, hunting or hiking boot.
Cheers!"

Cabelas Mtn Hiker Elite,August 13, 2008
By yreka21from Arizona
"For the money, this is a good boot for light to moderate hiking and work. Very comfortable, no break in time. I do not recommend this boot for heavy use in rough terrain, which is what I used the boots for. Under this type of use, the soles of my boots began disintegrating, with moderate sized chunks coming off the soles within 9 months of fairly heavy use in rough Arizona terrain. However, I think these boots would be just fine for light hiking and occasional heavy use."

Pleasantly Surprised,June 26, 2008
By GeorgeLightHikerfrom Auburn, AL
"I searched the web for weeks before deciding on these boots. I needed a good pair of mountaineering boots for a week of mountain climbing and hiking in the Cascade Mountains, but didn't want to pay $300+ for Everest- grade plastic boots. I haven't gone on the trip yet, but I feel confident they will perform well, having tested them on Mount Cheaha. I replaced the insert with a pair of Dr. Scholl's orthotic gel inserts, but I do that with most of my shoes. Overall, I think they're a great pair of boots for a great price. I'll write another review after my trip in August."

"these boots fit great, my foot is slightly narrow and the lace to toe design allows for a snug fit by the toes. The relatively light weight compared to other gortex hikers is appreciated. This is a boot that I would buy again. Thanks Cabelas!"

Great Boot for Me,March 20, 2008
By cliffjumper2from Vancouver Island
"Mine are called Mtn Hiker 3, but identical in every obvious way. I did not need any break-in period out of the box.
I needed a strong rigid vibram-sole, above-ankle, waterproof boot that preferrably didn't weigh a ton for cliff-scrambling and rock-pile fishing my salt-water coast. It is brutal on your feet.
The rocks are razor-sharp, so I wanted the rubber rand... mostly wet, often a bit slimed or sea-weedy, so I needed the best outsole possible, usually my best results are with Vibram. There's not an even spot to stand a foot on and I'm usually given 0.5" - 6 sq inches per rock to stand, cast & fish, so I needed a pretty rigid sole to support me for a day of scrambling and casting.
Going up & down I'm often on eroding sandstone, 1"-3" granite ledges etc..., so I also needed a great deal of torsional stability and lateral toe-support.
Given the waves often swamp me and soak my Gore-Tex, I did want the boots to be waterproof.
These boots fit me perfectly and tighten right down to my toes, very important for my terrain. I can stand all day, and while tired, my feet are just fine on this extremely rough and jagged rock. The support from sole to the boot-top is very good. Torsional support is excellent. They are amazingly light.
If I have any sqawk, it's nearly slipping my toes off a 0.5" ledge, ripping a fingernail because, (they are a hiker) the lateral (toe-to-heel) support comes from a 1/2-3/4 shank, not a full steel shank. But, hikers & backpackers would prefer that, and I appreciate it when hiking-in and scrambling around, it's just those toe-hangers I have to be careful on.
And, the laces need a heavy waxing because they slip and need frequent tightening.
For me to get a better boot for my needs I'd have to buy those thermoplastic glacier-mountaineering boots with removable inner booties for $400+/pr and pack them in to my fishing area.
Time will tell about durability, but having spend several full days in them, I am a very happy customer in these boots.
I hope they fit you as well as they do me.
Cheers!"

Good light hiker,February 7, 2008
By AjBostonfrom Boston, MA
"I bought these boots few months back. I hiked 3 times with the boots. The boots are made well and really like the lace to toe design. But when going uphill there is a painful pinch on the heels. I had to stop quite a few times and remove my boots. I dont know if there is something in the heel of the boots thats doing it or just the leather. I thought this would be the boot but cause of the pinch on the heel going uphill, I wont be able to use it for any serious backpacking or long hikes. The boots are good in everyother way. I would use the boots for light trail walking but not for backpacking. I am planning to buy another pair of backpacking boots."

Almost a great boot,December 11, 2007
By somenamefrom Helena, MT
"These are the best fitting boots I have every owned. The lace to toe design allows you to get the boot very snug. Going down hill or walking on flat ground they perform flawlessly. However, when you turn them uphill and start to climb they show their flaw. The heel cup is absolutely unforgiving and in my case crippling. My heels would get so sore in just a short uphill climb that I just couldn't use them. I had very high hopes for these boots and just kept trying to break them in but it never happened so I sent them back. Not sure what to do now. It was a very sad day when I boxed them up. However, I would highly recommend them to anyone else. At least give them a try."

Stability of product,March 26, 2007
By DrBullseyefrom Denison, Texas
"Note that hikers are made in Romania, not Italy. Acceptable for use in short, non-packing hiking, but not durable or stable for heavy use. Materials seem good, but not outstanding. Cabela's Mountain Hikers(not the Elite) more acceptable for heavy hiking or hunting."

Best I've found,March 26, 2007
By Shipfrom Panama City, Florida
"I've been buying two pair of boots a year and they don't last. Several years ago I fell from a tree stand I was practicing putting up the day before hunting season opened. When I fell I landed on an exposed tree root and shattered the ball of my heel. It didn't heal exactly right and as a result I push out with my left foot as I walk and quickly roll over the outside edge of shoes and boots. The Hiker elite boots have cured my problem. They are extremely sturdy and stand up very well to the brutal force applied to them. I'm looking forward to not buying my next set of boots right away."
