"construction of the ladder is excellent and works well. More specific information on types of boats it installs on should be included however.
Our jon boat's gunwalels are on a slant and the nose has a slight curve. The ladder is desinged for boats with level gunwales and straight sides. After alterations to the design we were able to make it work - someone without our patience and know how probably would have sent it back."

"I purchased this unit over {2} two years ago...I mounted it to a Lowe 1756 on the rear platform. Other than bolting down the steps and shorting the ladder clamp screws. This unit is perfect for my labs in deep or shallow waters. It is must for a waterfowler with a 100+ pound dog."

"I'm vary happy with this ladder. I cut the last step off because the ladder was so long for my small boat, and I put locking nuts on rather than using the ones that came with it, but it's great now."

User Friendly,
October 26, 2008
By ShadowTheLab

"The Ladder was easy to attached to the back of my boat. A question I had was "will my dog figure this thing out and actually use the ladder." The answer to that question came quick. To adapt Shadow to the ladder I attached it to the back of the boat and on dry land led her up and down the ladder a few times. Then from the boat, still on dry land, I had Shadow retrieve and come in the boat by climbing the ladder. When we went to the water I did basically the same thing by throwing the bumper close to the back of the boat and coaxing Shadow to the ladder. After two of those she would come to the ladder and climb in. After around 10 practice retrieves throwing the bumper all different directions and distances Shadow would swim to the ladder and climb in, ready for the next. In the field the ladder worked as well as it stood the test of the weight of a full grown Lab and Canadian Honker. Cabela's Northern Flight™ Dog Ladder is a wonderful product that has made my and Shadow's duck hunting experience so much easier. I highly recommend this product."

Terrible product,
October 8, 2008
By Cupped
from Wisconsin
|
"This is terrible product. The second time out, the bottom step fell off. Upon closer inspection, we found the ladder torsions and twists when lifted or deployed. This action causes the step screws to pop out. The steps treads are attached with screws from the bottom verses pass through bolts and nuts. We found the quality of the screw application was not acceptable. Some srews were angled in and some not biting enough of the wood tread. The fix: We removed the steps and welded cross braces on the front and back of each step frame to prevent torsion and twist. The extra bracing takes the twisting pressure off the step screws. Then we added pass through bolts and nuts to hold the step treads in place. This was after we had to fix the carpet adhesive. The clamps are not universal. They are designed for rolled/round top gunwales and will not hold tight on many of the new style boats. The paint is marginal. The whole unit had to be wire brushed and painted prior to the second season to stop the rust. Our boat and accessories are garage kept during the off season."

MOUNT BRACKETS,
September 28, 2008
By SOONERDUCKHUNTER
from VICI, OK
|
"I RECENTLY PURCHASED THIS PRODUCT AND MOUNTED IT ON MY BOAT. I CALLED MY YOUNG AND WILD LAB, SOONER, OVER TO THE BOAT AND HAD HIM LOAD UP. THE LADDER FELL RIGHT OFF OF THE BOAT. THE MOUNT BRACKETS, NO MATTER HOW TIGHT I GOT THEM, WOULD NOT STAY CLAMPED ON THE BOAT. IT IS JUST LIKE ANY OTHER BOAT, 16 FT LUND V HULL. SO I QUICKLY SAW THE NEED TO FIX THIS PROBLEM, NOT TO MENTION SOONER DID NOT WANT ANYTHING TO DO WITH IT AFTER IT CAME DOWN ON HIM. I WELDED A PIECE OF 1"X4"X1/8" ANGLE IRON ONTO THE MOUNT BRACKET AND IT HOLDS WONDERFULLY NOW. IT ONLY TOOK A HAND FULL OF TREATS TO GET SOONER BACK ON IT ALSO!"

underbuilt,

By duckinmuck

"screws holding on steps are short, hold poorly. Clamps and other hardware are OK, but the entire thing started to rust after one use. Carpet came of steps. Lasted on season and the clamps rusted to an unuseable condition and the framework was a loss. Maybe it would be OK if you painted it and washed it after every use, not the way most duck hunters treat equipment. Build it tougher."

dog ladder,

By blonddogs
from Lodi Ca

"The ladder was the most reasonably priced offered by Cabela's. I would recommend spending a bit more money and get a quality ladder. The wing nuts striped out right away, and the ladder is way too heavy for even my 90 lb. lab. He also had a difficult time getting up as there is no large platform on bottom step. I would purchase a lighter aluminum frame ladder with a platform if I had it to do over."

"i had the same problems that seemed to be consistent with other reviews that i read. first, i have a v bottom boat with curved sidewalls so the mount was unstable. i also had a step break off the first use. i thought the fold away option would be nice, but it basically just took up too much space in the back of my boat (17' seacraft)."

"It is everything describe. A good product for the poor hunter trying to get a duck. And also very nice for his best friend. Not having to drag your dog over the side of the boat. That could hurt him or turning him off from retrieving from a boat altogether."

Ok..... With Modifications,
November 6, 2007
By Shakeandbake
from Bel Air, MD
|
"Not completly sure how I feel about this ladder yet. The dog loves it, and it has made boat re entry much nicer. However, the gunnel clamps are made for a round top which I don't have, so I have had to rig it, which hasn't worked out so well. Also the steps on the ladder came off during the first hunt, and the hardware is rusting. All this negative, but I still have it on the boat and will continue to use it."

Not impressed,
October 30, 2007
By Tim543
from Washington
|
"Had to make significant modifications to ladder to work on my boat. C clamps did not hold on my gunnel. Had to fabricate new brace because the one that came with the ladder was not long enough for the sloped side of my boat. The ladder may fit a john boat style boat better. I have a river sled with sloped and higher sides. I was not impressed with this product and would not recommend it."
