Nitro Rifle Rest,
October 7, 2009
By GreatPlainsHunter

|
"Used rest to sight in a lightweight 300 Weatherby Magnum. Completely eliminated recoil with one sandbag added. Padding on forearm and stock rest is very good. Would give product a 5 rating if elevation adjustment didn't require removing rifle from rest. However, it was an excellent value for the money. I shot a 3/4" group at 100yds with the 300 WBY. I wouldn't have been able to pull it off without a quality rest."

"The Nitro shooting rest acted as I expected coming from Cabela's, Great!. The use of tie-downs for the barrel and the butt stock is preferred when shooting magnums."

Cabela's Nitro Shoulder Shield Rest,

"for the sale price this is a great buy....yea it can be a bit unsteady at first but once you lock it in it works very well. I would definitely recommend a heavy sand bag..I use it to sight in my 30.06 and I do have to readjust after a shot but it saves my shoulder and I shoot consistent patterns..with out doubt this allowed me to drop a buck at 160 yrds...is it worth the full price? Not really..is it a buy at a sale price..absolutely"

Nitro Shoulder Shield Rest,
September 10, 2009
By DoySneck

"A reasonably priced and well made gun rest for shooting big caliber rifles or just a good steady rest. Saves ammo during site in process. To tame recoil, just add a bag or two of shot for weight in the rest tray.
Bore Sight then just shoot 2-3 rounds with the cross hairs on the bullseye. Look through the scope and see if the grouping is close together then with the crosshairs on the bullseye again do not move the rifle. Simply move the cross hairs to where the bullets grouped. I can do in 3-6 shots what used to take up to a box of ammo."

"I used the Shoulder Shield only once so far but I LOVE IT? What a relief on my shoulder. I typically expend a lot of ammo when i finally get a chance to get to the rifle range and it always leaves me sore the next day; not any more! recommend the Shoulder Shield to everyone, especially those with "bad" shoulders like mine!"

poorly made,

"This is not a rest to try and sight a rifle in. The front rest is poorly made making changes in elevation difficult and sloppy. It does reduce the recoil but if you are looking for one that will adjust smoothly look elsewhere. I for one am returning it."

Nitro Shoulder Rest,
February 3, 2009
By WYO340
|
"The rest works very well once you determine the right height for sitting, which is a little higher than normally used for sandbags rests. The front rest/bag could use additional filler to hold narrow stocked guns more secure. Likewise, you may want to use some shim material to hold the butt of some guns solidly in the rear rest. The pan for the sandbag ballast weight is very accessible, and much more user friendly than some of the popular competitor models. Overall, this unit is a very serviceable and at a lower price."

Save your money,

"I just bought this and used it to shoot today. after every shot i had to adjust it. Then I couldn't get the front high enough so i had to find a peice of 2x6 and screw it to the bench.... The feet wouldn't go high enough. after six shots everything start coming apart?????? Back to sand bag which I didn't want to do and why I bought this in the first place. I will be listing this item for sale in the next few days and try another type of rest. I used my friend caldwell lead sled he bought from cabelas and it worked GREAT. This looked the same so i bought it thinking it had the cabelas name on it how could I go wrong. Save your money. Oak"

somethings wrong,
November 12, 2008
By sdslim

"I read the review about being the rock solid rest. It is reasonable, but not rock solid. When I opened the box the front rest bag was cut (sand running out) next to a seem. The instructions said don't contact Cabelas, but contact an e-mail. I did and nothing happened after 2 attempts. If you grip the gun in the rest ever so slightly, it moves several inches at 100 yards (vertically). The product has some good points, but it would have to be a good sale to buy it with what I know."

saves ammo,
December 10, 2007
By shadowgrass

"It pays for itself in ammo. I have a Weatherby that doesn’t really fit well into the back part of the rest because the cheek piece on the gun is wide, the stock needs to be forced back to get it all the way in. I shot it once with the gun slightly ahead of the rear of the rest and the side of the rear rest (sheet metal with a little padding over it) sliced a a sliver of the cheek piece off of my stock. Now I always put a piece of cardboard between the stock and the rear part of the rest for extra insurance."

Simple, rugged and user friendly,
November 12, 2007
By rolleasy
from Mojave Desert

"I had read one customers complaint about the seams on the sandbag separating during the first trip to the range. The sandbag on the unit that I received was definitely over filled to the bursting point and it would have had poor stock nestling characteristics. Typically in similar products, these sandbags are shipped empty to save weight (which provokes complaints about not being ready to use, right out of the box). I removed the stitching that sealed the fill tube and dumped out all of the sand, refilling the bag (less full then originally filled) with #7.5 lead shot(note: this makes the rest very front heavy until the additional weight is applied to the platform portion of the rest). It doesn’t take a full bag of shot to fill the sandbag so the shot bag can be taped shut and used as a weight on the platform of the rest. The partial bag and one more full bag of shot on the platform of the rest is just about perfect (note: bags of lead shot cost “a lot” more then sand…definitely not a cheap material). Lead shot in the sandbag is more fluid then it would be filled with sand, making the stock rest more easily adjustable. Additionally, lead shot won’t turn into an adobe brick if it gets wet. Another customer wrote that the butt rest and the stock rest on the unit he received are not plumb with each other. On the one that I received the butt rest tilts slightly to the left but I don’t find that it adversely affects the performance of the overall rest for my needs. I’m very pleased with the performance of my (slightly modified) rest. On the first outing I sighted in a 22-250 and a 30-06. It handled the recoil of the 06 just fine. I’ll be trying it out with the 300WBY and 375H&H during future trips to the range."
