"My Grandson, learned what it takes to start a fire in the wind and rain, he is 6 years old. he was able to get it going after three trys. if he can learn to build a fire in the wind and rain with a flint and steel, we should all be able to."

Weak at best,

By DeFisherman

"I took this to a Scouting camping trip as a challenge to start a fire without matches. The steel is okay, but the flint this comes with is poor. The sparks the set was able to produce were small, few, and not hot enough to catch a fire. I replaced the flint with a better piece and we got good sparks. I would not buy this again."

Flint & Steel Firestarter Set,

By slamar

"Impractical for the modern day camper, hiker or hunter, but it works. Even though this method is "age-old" and traditional for the survivalist, a good quality windproof lighter, some dry kindling and a little bit of fuel from the charcoal lighter fluid will spare any sportsman the time trying to start a fire."

Great for Starting Fires,
December 20, 2008
By HandiAngler

"Would be nicer if they added a few simple tricks for beginner instructions. I would give a 5 Star otherwise. Just remember to have a char cloth on top of flint and about 1/8 inch from a sharp flint edge. Or you can use a cotton ball with Vaseline or petroleum gel. Spread it on the cotton ball, then tear loose the cotton ball like a bird nest. Use the striker and by striking with striker (Steel) at an angle holding the flint steady. PRACTICE AND PRACTICE ... in two strikes U should have a char coal with the char cloth or fire going with the cotton ball."

Flint and Steel,
November 18, 2008
By Servussuus

"I thought this would be a difficult task to accomplish. But, was very pleased with the simplicity of it. I was able to to start a fire very quickly using char cloth and a nest of oakum and jute twine. I thought the seller could post a striking technique that could start the beginner with a better understanding of the flint and steel method. But......... I was also pleased at the size of the flint rock. This should last awhile.
It was an awesome site to see a fire that I started with Flint and Steel!"

Broke,
May 10, 2008
By Aksl26

"The second time I practiced using this product the steel striker broke into two pieces which made it then almost impossible to then get sparks from the flint. Also it is pretty hard to get sparks off the flint if you have had no prior experience with any kind of flint and steel.
A good part however is that the directions are very helpful and easy to follow. The kit also comes with a thick and big piece of cloth which is perfect to make charred cloth with. The piece of flint is also a good size witch fits easily into ones hand. So altogether the steel broke into two pieces and its pretty hard to get a spark off the flint but if you have experience and it doesn't brake its a good product"

firestarting- "Survivor Style",
May 6, 2008
By gidude

"Simple kit with flint and steel piece that's relatively easy to use. Excellent directions for cooking the charred cloth which is the key to all flint and steel firestarting. Most tinder will not ignite with flint and steel. You need charred wood or cloth to catch the spark and create an ember that will eventually ignite the tinder. I actually cooked the cloth in an all metal coffee tin on my gas grill prior to a camping trip. Trust me, if I can do it anyone can!"

Great Tradition,

By McClintock83

"I wouldn't suggest counting on the flint and steel fire starter kit as your only means of fire unless you are a pro with the kit. It does take quite a bit of practice. For the price it is a great tool to have, even if only to carry on a tradition or as a reminder of how blessed we are to have push-button starters and lighter fluid."

Works as it should...,
July 28, 2007
By itchytweed
from Milwaukee, WI

"The high-carbon striker fits my large hands just fine and the supplied flint is large enough to hold easily, has a really fine grain and good, sharp edges. I had no need to use the enclosed cloth to make char cloth as I have a copious amount in a tin made out of a sacrificed, all cotton t-shirt. The sparks that come off are quite prodigious but it does take a small amount of practice to get a good spark shower. Others have said that it is hard to get the char cloth to catch. You need good, well done, char cloth and the enclosed instructions are excellent at describing how to make your own char cloth. The key to catch the sparks is to fold the char cloth in quarters and point the layered fuzzy ends at the sharp edge so the layers catch the sparks. A good spray of sparks and you are lit. Nice thing about char cloth is that the more you blow on it, the hotter it gets and aspen wood pet bedding makes for a good "birds nest". Now to teach Cub Scouts the fine art of using a flint and steel."
