    nikon monarch 1200, November 18, 2009
By sargentMAC from indiana and pennsylvania

"On my nikon monarch 1200 I have found the following. Deer-300yds facing/575-600yds broadside, large concrete columns grey/white (RR bridge) 1368yds, yes it will range beyond 1200yds, trees beech smooth white 25" dia. 938yds, oak rough brown 30" dia. 787yds these I would say are non reflective targets . All where at mid day no precipitation with no secondary interfering brush/limbs or ground rise between the unit/target. "Not useful beyond 800yds" I dont agree . I shoot a 300win. mag. with 6.5-20X leupold to a max. hunting range of 600yds and find it very useful. Monarch 1200 Brightness scale rating -10 thru 0 (0 being your un aided eye) thru +10 I give the unit a +2 which is just slighty better than bare eyes at twilight with no moon. For reference the 6.5-20X scope listed above gets my rating of +6 @ 6.5X , +2 @ 10X , and -4@ 20X. The backlit recticle feature of the monarch 1200 is to be used after ranging in low light to see the recticle and yardage/meters not during due to its being too bright and is a non adjustable intensity, on/off is your only choice there. Tip--- DONT TOUCH THE LENSES protect them. If your shooting or ranging over 1000yds then the swaro is for you but the nikon 1200 is fast and simple to use and if your shooting deer over 600yds then your my heeeero."

Geat at first, October 15, 2009
    By lucki1469 from Boise Idaho

"At first, perfect, as time went on the readings became harder to get. I've had it just over 2 years and now it will not take a reading over 140 yards.. never been dropped, never been wet. Sent in for repair and was quoted 282.00. To me I expect better quality or them to stand by their product. It should last longer than it did."

    Great Rangefinder!, September 10, 2009
    By RichW from Plains, MT

"I got this rangefinder to replace a older Bushnell 800 because I use my rangefinder to range approach distances as well as shots and wanted something with a little more reach. So far I have been extremely pleased, which is more than I was with a unit from another well known manufacturer that I returned. Unit is easy to use and it has good, clear optics for a rangefinder. I got used to the differences in the function and button positions quickly and the unit readily ranged to 1100 yds off my back deck to rocks and trees. In size it's actually smaller than my old Bushnell. Overall, I'm extreemly happy with the unit and look forward to hunting with it this fall."

Quality Range Finder, August 17, 2009
    By AZBullchaser from AZ

"I have owned this range finder for aprox 2 years now and it has done a great job. The readings are very accurate and I am able to get ranges past 1,000 yards even on trees.

Like most units this model is basic. It give you the range and it does so accurately. It doesn't have a drop compensator or other fancy things like say the leupold RX-IV, but you have to remember that those angle compensators are based on generic formulas and if you hand load a 300 Wby Mag round it will not be accurate. If my memory serves me right the most powerful rifle angle selection for the RX-IV is based on a factory 30-06 round.

The only negative I have against this is that the view is not very bright. When you are dealing with ranging early morning or late afternoon it is very dark through the objective. I don't think it is the size because I have used others with the same lens size and they are much brighter.

But all in all a great value.

Different than the Nikon 550, April 20, 2009
By hopetomountainhunt from St. Robert ,MO

"I wanted this for hunting but when I received I found that it would not give the actual level distance but gave then true distance from where I was. That is shooting at a fortyfive degree angle the actual distance is longer. This unit is not for hunting but good for finding actual distances."

    Great rangefinder, March 25, 2009
    By muledeer190 from Riverton,WY

"This is one of the best rangefinders I have ever used. It ranges great all the way out to 1200 yards. The only way I have not gotten it to range is off snow covered hillsides other than that it works great! Worked great on my antelope hunt, as well as my elk and mule deer hunts."

Nikon Gold 1200 Rangefinder is as advertised, February 5, 2009
By MontanaGuyinKorea from AF Base in South Korea

"Just had the rangefinder a short while and I am impressed with the optics and operability. Have been able to range everything I aimed at out to 1000 yards. It is hard to hold steady at long distances but so are my binocs and spotting scope. The operation is simple enough that I could figure it out without a lot of stress. It works good on the golf course and I look forward to trying it hunting when I get back to the states."

Best rangefinder for the money, November 27, 2008
    By Nikon1200

"I was tossed between the Leica 1200 and the Nikon 1200. After an hour of comparing them side by side I finally chose the Nikon. The Leica clearly had better optics, and the digital display was brighter. But the Nikon ranged several dark objects that the Leica was unable to range inside the store. They were indentical on range distance that both were able to pick up. Both have the scan feature, and both are better than the Leupold line. At $300 cheaper, I am very happy with the Nikon Monarch Gold 1200."

NIKON MONARCH GOLD 1200 RANGEFINDER, November 10, 2008
    By pensitka from Alaska

"I recently purchased and returned a competitor's top end rangefinder. Too difficult to use the dang thing, dim display, no luck ranging objects even when using a tripod.

I borrowed my buddy's Nikon Monarch for a side by side comparison. No contest, the Nikon Monarch beat my original rangefinder hands down. Simple to use out of the box, easy to read display, the Monarch even picks up targets at night under streetlights, the Monarch is a very good product, also a few bucks less as well.

My new Monarch just arrived. Works great!

    Monarch Gold 1200, October 13, 2008
    By hadetgodt from Denver, Colorado

"Have owned two years. Antelope hunt in Wyoming 2008, the Monarch maximum range was 565 yards off large rocks and walls. Definitely no readings off animals or the sagebrush to the needed distance. Nothing even close to the advertised 1200 yards. I have regrets. Accurate to the 565 yards though."

    By Sniper500 from York, PA

"Outstanding quality and function, convenient size, easy to use-typical Nikon product. I've used this rangefinder in hunting and golf situations and it performed extremely well in both modes. You can easily switch from picking up the farthest point to range or a closer point with background (pin on the green). I would recommend this product to anyone interested in a high quality rangefinder."

Best Rangefinder on the market, September 20, 2008
By ozark69 from West Fork, AR

"This is the best rangefinder over all in my opinion for the money. I compared my Nikon Monarch 1200 with a new Leica 1200 that my friend has, it's faster and it seems to be more accuret. It is very simple to use and it works well on live targets as well as regular targets. But the only thing I don't like is the optic. The optic is tinted and it's not as clear as the Leica but it will work well on bright days. My friend is very impressed with it's performance and is now going to buy a Nikon 1200. I plan on useing it in Wyoming this year on an antelope hunt. [8/19/09]"

Nikon does the job, August 19, 2008
By collbran from Grnd Mesa, Colorado

"Previous bad experience with a high priced competitor led me to ask Cabelas staff for a recommendation for a replacement rangefinder. They recommended the Nikon Monarch Gold Laser 1200. because of the long ranges I shoot at and the ease of operation. I very strongly agree! This is the best rangefinder I have used in years. Its ease of operation, even at extreme ranges in unsurpassed. Strongly recommend it as well as the Cabelas staff knowledge and professionalism for their recommendation."

Nikon Monarch Gold Laser 1200 Rangefinder, May 22, 2008
    By Paximus

"Very easy to use and seems accurate, the only negative things are it’s difficult to range distant objects without bracing the unit, and it’s hard to remove from the tightly fitting supplied case... also, the multi-language instruction sheet is a BIG pain, and doesn’t fit into the case with the rangefinder..."

    Nikon 1200, February 12, 2008
    By 1Blacktailhunter from Northern California

"I bought these for a dual purpose of hunting and golf. They are light weight, waterproof and easy to use. Because they scan to 1200 yds you have to be able to hold them still on a small object. That is a small issue compared to the extra range and clarity. I highly recommend them. How many times have you set with your hunting partner and guessed how far that rock or ridge are away. Don't guess any more....."

Finally, I found an excellent rangefinder!!!, January 29, 2008
By BBBrian from A rural area of central California

"This is the best rangefinder I have ever tried or used. It is simple to use, measures quickly, accurately and consistently, on both reflective and non-reflective targets and allows me to keep my glasses on while targeting. I had the Leupold RX-IV for a while and returned it for a refund (by the way Cabela's cheerfully did this for me, with no problems). The Nikon is fast and simple and the optics are bright. Note that both units are in the same price range.

I am one that believes that figuring out the impact location of the bullet should be based on the shooters knowledge and usage of the rifle or pistol they are using.

All they really should need to know from their rangefinder is the accurate range to the target, everything else is up to them. This includes up-hill, down-hill, wind, altitude, temperature and whatever else is happening around them, when they are going to take the shot. If a person thinks that a small electronic unit hanging around their neck is going to replace intimate knowledge of the guns usage, they should take a second look at the shooting art.

I highly recommend this unit to anyone who wants a simple to use unit, without all of the extra features that complicates what really is needed, the range to the target.
