"Penn has removed the reverse functionality on this type reel. Earlier metal reels had a switch to select either reel-in or reverse at the rear of the gear case which is now absent. It was a big disappointment. This reel would be a handicap fishing in the surf."

"This reel is amazing! I took this badboy out on a trial run to see what it could do, till this day I still have'nt found its limit. I've pulled every type of game fish in my general area from sharks to surf perch! & this thing still hase'nt let me down yet!"

20+ years and going strong,

"I bought this reel for saltwater more than 20 years ago. I don't baby it, clean it up after my annual saltwater fishing vacation trip, and I've never had to replace so much as a bailspring. There is a little bit of corrosion on the outer case, but other than that no sign of all those years of heavy use. A great, dependable piece of equipment--you can't go wrong with Penn."

"this reel is the most versitale and well built reels i have ever used. i purchased the 950 ss and i love it i used it from maine to florida. it has the line capacity to go in 400 feet of water for cod and hadock in maine and it has the drag power to go for tuna off the coast of florida. for its drag capabilites and size it is extremley light weight for being all metal. i have owned this reel for 5 years now and not one part on it has broke."

"this real is a workhorse. many noreast surfcasters know and miss the z series... this is the next best reel for the surf by penn.. drag performs beautifully especially w/ a cow striper or a gorilla blue hooked up with no sticking. casts great and get this.... the bail actually stays open while casting. no more $20 lures getting shot like a rocket never to be seen again. as for maintanence, very little is required to keep this reel working. i've had mine for three years now, rinse in fresh water after a nite in the surf ( sometimes not for a few days after a trip) and a yearly cleaning after the season ends. anyone serious about surfcasting or someone who is just starting surfcasting and doesnt want to spend alot of money or buy garbage, this is the reel for you. i have three myself and would only trade them for a van staal"

"Smooth flawless reel. I missed not having reverse capability at first but after a few casts and catching a few fish I wised up to fighting fish off the drag. This is an amazingly smooth reel. I used it on a 12' Penn rod. It was a great match. This reel should last a life time."

"The older Penn Reels were way better. I have an older 650 and I'll probably never need another one.....these new one don't have that "tank" feel of the old ones. With that said, these are still OK."

"An excellent reel typical of Penn's long standing craftsmanship. One of their all metal models. I tried the Captiva and it failed to hold up. After talking to several Penn dealers the Spinfisher was recommended beacuse of it's all metal parts and durability for surf casting. I am very pleased and the blues and stripers aren't."

Clean casting, steady cranking,

"Got the Spinfisher reel as a gift. I use it with a Fenwick Salt Stik for surfcasting with large-size bait chunks. The Spinfisher has cast clean and long every time. The "Infinite Anti-Reverse" gives greater flexibility with the bail and with line length for casting. Drag is easy-to-use and reliable. The reeling action is very smooth, and the crank is very strong--steady like a winch when pulling in a tournament-caliber blue off the coast of New Jersey. Good line capacity, too.
Strong construction and design. Has been through salt and sand in mayhem on the beach. Cleaning and maintenance are very easy, and the reel comes with an exploded diagram for easy part replacement and repair (though I don't expect to need that in the next decade).
In conclusion, simplicity and durability win in a very reliable piece of equipment, and I would confidently recommend this reel. I wouldn't mind being able to reverse the reel action, but I guess that's a trade-off."
