Our LST Rod Series, known for its powerful accuracy, is now available in lengths and weights ideally suited for spey casting. With their 40 million-modulus graphite construction and fast actions, LST Spey Rods fire casts incredible lengths, allowing you to cover stretches of water that can't be reached by conventional overhead casting. Other advantages of spey casting are that it reduces arm and shoulder fatigue and keeps the fly in the water longer, increasing your odds for success. The 11'3" 6-weight single-hand rod has a lightweight moderate/fast action that's perfect for casting long distances, float-tubing, roll casts and mending. The 12'4" 8/9-wt. is the perfect length for fishing small to medium rivers and offers plenty of power for long casts. This double-hand rod is so lightweight it casts like a single-hand rod, making fly control extremely easy. The 14-ft. 9/10-weight is an excellent choice for all-around fishing, whether you're a beginner or expert. It's lightweight enough for day-long casting when you need to cover big water.

Cabelas LST Spey Rod, November 4, 2009
By WD111 from Clifton, Colorado

"Roll casts of 80 feet can be made. I recommend the B type grip because of the rubber tip. The 13 footer is definately not a whimpy rod and with a large reel it is heavy. It is very sensative considering its size. The length helps keep the fly out of the shoreline moss when collecting slack for the next cast. It has an excellent finish. I used white out to mark the reel seat for lining up the line guides and I put on a hook keeper above the grip. Outstanding rod. Outstanding price. Cabelas has a super product. With 13 feet of rod and 8 weight line with backing it is a two handed cast. A great fun rod."

14' LST Spey Rod, August 7, 2009
By Steeheader from Eastern Oregon

"Excellent rod, regardless of price. This is my second one in this size. Light, responsive and easy to cast even with heavy sink tips used for steelhead. I also own 2 Temple Fork Deer Crk spey rods and there is little difference except in rod speed. The LST's seem to have slightly faster action. I see zero reason to spend more for a spey rod."

5 stars for the price, April 3, 2009
By DuckView from Montana

"I received my LST 1389 Spey rod recently. It seems as nicely made as my two other older LST Spey rods I bought a couple of years ago. They are still made in Korea, not China as some forum posts have suggested. If there is any Spey rod that is nicer for the price, then I have not seen it. The LST Spey rod will be signifiocantly lighter and livelier than a TFO Pro Series rod, and substantially less money.

You have to get up in the $400+ price class with the big name manufacturers to get a significantly better rod, and even then it will be a personal preference and/or cosmetic quality thing more than an absolute difference in performance. All the LST rods I ever used down to the 4 wt. singlehanded rod were outstanding at their price point, and outperformed rods that cost a bit more. I use the LST Series rods more than all my other rods, which have basically been relegated to backup status, even if they cost more.

Great rod for a great price!, March 9, 2009
By Anonymous from Cleveland, OH

"I was looking for a nice switch-rod to use for steelhead in northeastern ohio, but I did not want to spend a lot of money. I've been using a 10'6'' St. Croix for a few years, and never knew what I was missing until I picked up this rod only 3 weeks ago! I absolutely love it. I got the 8wt and it has plenty of backbone to land these big fish quite easily. The 11'6'' rod makes roll-casting and mending very easy and it is light enough that one-handed casting and high-sticking can be done without tiring too quickly. Great rod at a great price!!"

My first Spey rod, July 14, 2008
By Catch1Yet from Coast of Oregon

"This was the first time that I've purchased a fly rod from Cabelas and my first experience with a Spey rod. I'm a happy customer! The workmanship and design of the rod seem excellent. It will be some while before I've mastered any but the simplest of Spey casting techniques, but with this rod it has been quite easy to cast a lot farther than I've ever been able to cast with my 9 footer. One minor annoyance is that there is nothing visible on the butt section to line up the guides of the top sections, so I seat the reel before joining the butt section to the rest of the rod."

Just what the Doctor Ordered, April 19, 2008
By RockyMtnFlyGuy from St George, Ut

"Having been a Cabela's shopper and tackle supporter since Smokey the Bear was a cub. Well would you believe since I've had dark hair. (Roughly 30 years) I read an article about a crossover fly rod in one of my Fly fisihng magazines. It described a "shorter" spey rod of eleven or twelve feet instead of the normal 13 to 15 foot models. I hunted high and low for an affordable one, but all I found was 400 to 700 dollar models. That is until I picked up my Cabela's Fly Fishing catalog. Probably should have looked there first. You folks have come up with a winner. (AGAIN!)
I've been practicing casting with this 11 foot beauty and can't wait to try it out on a float trip I have planned on the North Platte river in Wyoming next month.
You folks never cease to amaze me, great products and fair prices. THANKS!!

LST single-hand Spey rod model LST 116, September 25, 2007
By twentyincher from Logan, Utah

"I purchased the Cabela’s LST single-hand Spey rod (model LST 116, 11 foot 3 inch in six weight) for use on medium-sized western rivers across wide stretches of water where cliffs and brush behind me would prohibit effective overhead or roll casting using regular fly rods. This rod is light and flexible, suitable for single-handed as well as careful two-handed Spey casting (be gentle, don’t over-load it!) . It also functions very well as a single-hand fly rod for standard overhead and roll casting, using the cork end below the reel as a fighting butt. I matched the rod with a Redington Crosswater 7,8,9 reel loaded with Rio wind-cutter spey line, six weight (plenty of space on the reel for 150 yards of 30 pound backing). This combination allows delicate but powerful Spey casting and also acts as a managable weight-forward line when using standard single-handed fly rod casting techniques. It is this dual-functionality high performance that makes this rod one that I carry every trip. The finish on the rod is excellent, guides are strong and well-placed, and the cork handle is comfortable and easy on the hands. The Spey rodder will find that this rod performs significantly differently from a longer, stouter rod (such as a more standard 13’-14’, 8 or 9 weight Spey which is commonly employed on western streams for salmon and steelhead), however for medium to large browns and rainbows on typical western rivers, this shorter, lighter Spey rod works well. The Cabela’s LST Spey compares favorably with my longer, heavier Sage Spey rod (used for big water salmon and steelies), given my intended use. The only challenge so far is finding a fly rod-with-reel combo case designed to accomodate this longer 3-piece rod with spey butt and reel (most fly rod cases are designed with the attached reel case positioned for a reel at the end of the reel seat rather than several inches forward of it, as with the Spey butt). I have two other Cabela’s LST rods and have been very satisfied with them as well. I highly recommend this Spey rod to anglers looking for another way to reach out and touch larger trout across wide western waters."

LST Spey, April 21, 2007
By JJIdaho from Portland, OR

"I purchased the LST Spey 14910. The first thing I noticed about the rod is that it closely resembles offerings by companies that ask 2.5 times the price of the Cabela's model. Of course, I was more hopeful that performance was comparable. I live near big water and more importantly big fish. Salmon and steelhead make up a significant segment of the quarry in this part of the country. Generally, large flies and long casts comprise major portions of this type of fishing. Spey rods are perfect for this application and my LST 14910 performed beautifully. It is light and responsive for a big rod -- easy to cast all day."
