Garmin GPSMAP 76CX,September 19, 2009
By XXAlfrom Oregon/Idaho
"I bought this Garmin GPS only to find that it contains a bare minimum amount of mapping. Basic street locations are not even included when you buy this unit. For hunting and fishing it has even less mapping. A person must purchase a separate mapping program from Garmin to effectively use this GPS unit. Additionally, Garmin does not have mapping for across the United States and you must buy areas of the map. These maps are not cheap! They will run anywhere from $100 up to $130 per map! If you want to hunt in Idaho and also in Colorado you need to buy TWO separate maps for the GPS!
The Garmin GPS 76CX is not a inexpensive unit to begin with. You will fork over nearly $400. You would think at that price Garmin could provide better mapping or downloads for their products.
I will definately look at other products before I buy another Garmin GPS for hunting/fishing.

"The product is as stated, very pleased with functionality although took some time to understand. After I loaded the TOPO software it came to life. The only down fall would be that the Garmin instructions are a little lean, would be nice if there was a bit more detail. The battery life seems to be accurate advertised as 18hour I ran hard with it all day and forgot to turn off at night still had 2 bars of life in the morning."

"I use this unit in my work as a land surveyor. I am able to load NGS coordinate data into the unit and navigate to within three feet or less of the NGS control monuments. I have used the tracking function to locate new and existing roads for logging easements and have found that the raw positioning data is within 10 feet or less, depening on how long your willing to collect data for a specific point. In very remote areas I use the Garmin to collect positioning data for up to 20 min for use in State Plane calculations. I also use the positioning data and the displayed time and elevation for astronomic observations for azimuth determinations. The key to any GPS system in the sensitivity of the antenna and the Garmin is up there with units costing close to a thousand dollars. It is a good buy for the price. I have had great luck with service for the unit and have no complaints."

"Nice little unit, my first. I do like it and would recommend it, but disappointed in the base map. It's horrible. Plan on buying City Navigator or TOPO software if you really want to use it or buy a less expensive unit. The Inland Lakes (West) software isn't too impressive either. The areas I fish, don't have much detail."

"This is really a great product. I was able to compare it to one of the older models and the difference was remarkable. The details on the maps, the speed of the satellite connection, the number of available satellites, everything was just great. I would definitely recommend the 76CSx to anyone."

Rugged Beyond Belief,October 25, 2008
By Garminuser
"I’m writing about the Garmin 76C, the predecessor for the 76Cx. I’ve recently purchased a 76Cx, primarily for one reason…because of the ruggedness of the 76C. I had a 76C for 3 or 4 years and loved it. It gave me great service and I used it for auto navigation and hunting. Two hunting seasons ago, we started out for a hunting trip, and I had it in my jacket pocket. Unbeknownst to me, it fell out of my pocket as I was putting my jacket into the back seat of the truck into the snow. I didn’t notice its absence until I reached for it in the woods, and I thought I must have just left it on the table that morning. When we got home, I backed my truck up in the same tracks I left that morning and I went inside to find my GPS. After tearing up the house I went back to the truck to see if I dropped it inside of it. Nope. I looked down into the snow and there it was. The LCD was cracked, It was a little bent and I was devastated. I thought well, I’ll turn it on, just to see if it works….imagine my surprise, when it came up and locked into my position. The LCD, while cracked and broken still displayed about 75% of the screen. I used it until I could order another GPS, or my wife actually…as a Christmas present. There is absolutely no other GPS manufacturer for me. I’ve had Magellan and while I’m sure they are good units, GARMIN’s ruggedness and reliability is a definite win for me. They’re a 5 in my book."

"Good unit. lots more pros than cons. Only wish the screen moved a little faster when scrolling around the map. I like the fact that it can measure acres. Navagation to locations is very accurate too. Very accurate and logs on pretty quick. I dont think anyone would be dissapointed if they bought it."

Garmin 76 Csx,February 8, 2008

"This is an excellent product as a base navigation system. Having said that, if you are going to use the GPS in the field, or especially over water where there are marshes, small streams and inlets, you need to purchase the map software that goes with the GPS. The base system simply shows barren land, while the map software displays an excellent picture of small ponds, bayous, etc. The only problem I have with the GPS is that the instructions are VERY basic. It is not easy to learn how to use a function, which is probably the reason for selling a CD with operational instructions. For the cost of this device, good written instructions should be included. Sorting out the following example took a call to a Cabelas product service specialist, and he had to dig for the information. The altimeter function on the GPS is controlled by the barometric pressure. I sat in my duck boat on a bayou at sea level and gain 70' in altitude. GPS as a system, to my knowledge, is capable of giving height/altitude without the use of a barometric measurement. This is a software glich that should be corrected. It is a fault that is humorous in a marsh, but could be a challenge in a mountainous region. The GPS has several added capabilities which I found very useful, such as tide tables, sunrise/sunset, moon phase, and a calendar which displays the projected good and bad days for hunting and fishing. So far these have been accurate. The GPS also includes games, which I find useless for two reasons. First, even if the memory and power they use is minimal, why include them on a navigation tool. There are no directions on how to play the games, so while you are trying to figure out how to use the game function you are drawing power from your batteries."

Very disapointed,January 17, 2008
By kcd1from Maine
"I would not recommend the 76 or any of the garmin mapping hand helds. Reason being is the lack of software, they are un usable out of the box unless you only drive on highways. Thats about all you'll see in the base map that comes loaded on it. I called Garmin to complain and all they could offer was an additional software package for $111.00 more. They stated that all of their mapping handheld are like this. I'm going sell mine used and by a Delor$#. At lease they come wiht the software for less money than the Garmin and equal or better quality. What a disapointment after all the consumer reports wrote about how Garmin was so good. WRONG!"

Garmin GPSMap 76CSx,November 21, 2007
By Brocolifrom Flagstaff, AZ
"I purchased this unit for an elk hunt in Colorado. The unit appeared to function fine at first with proper waypoint locations and the ability to accurately navigate to them. I used the unit to obtain proper elevation levels, mark new waypoints, and to utilize the tracback feature. It worked fine at first, but as I entered my hunt I noticed that certain features began to function in a strange manner. When I entered my start point under a generally open canopy for certain excursions to navigate to a marked waypoint for the end of the hunt location the compass and trip computer did not give me an accurate heading or bearing point. The bearing pointer did not react in a correct direction and my heading did not even change although I attempted to correct this by walking around in a total opposite direction to try to rectifv the problem. It still did not change at all. Just when I thought the problem was very out of order the unit then completely shut off the compass feature and I had no bearing arrow at all. I shut the unit off and tried to restart the navigation process only to have the same trouble again with an inaccurate heading and bearing point. Had I not hunted this area before and known it was totally wrong I would have been completely lost! As much as I was upset with the problem I did use the elevation feature and basic compass I had in my pack to find my way out. The other features in the GPS unit all worked fine and I was able to work with those for basic navigation and elevation and finding my current location on a map with my hunting party, so at least they knew the area I was located in. I tried with using the user manual to troubleshoot the problem to the best of my ability to find a solution to the issues, but I could not find a proper answer. Tried recalibration on the unit several times and that did not work and checked all settings along with defaults and still could not find a solution to the problems. I will not rank the unit as poor due to the fact that some of the other features of the unit worked out fine, but you purchase a GPS for the navigation features to help you find your way around were you are. If that does not work it is a very unsettling feeling. I have had several other Garmin units in the past and they all performed in a superior manner. In my opinion the Garmin HCx would be a better bet for hunter's in the Rockies. I hope that this is just an isolated incident and that other owners or perspective buyers of this unit will not be detered or effected by the problem I had. I would recommend contacting Garmin prior to purchase to check their product history with this unit. Cabelas customer relations were fantastic to deal with while addressing the problem I had with my this purchase and certainly did right in this situation and I commend them for that and their hard work and attention with the matter."

"After losing my previous GPS unit I decided to upgrade. Very good decision to go with this unit. The tide chart feature is very handy for the areas we hunt. Much quicker signal aquisition than my older unit. The addition of the pre programmed regional mapping disc has made the 76Csx a solid all around unit."

Gets the job done,July 17, 2007
By psu08423from Oregon
"This is the second unit of this make and model I have had in my posession. The first would not even turn on. However, after exchange for a new unit, the second one worked as advertised.
I took the unit to Southeast Alaska on a fishing trip for salmon and halibut outside Juneau in the inside passage. Prior to the trip, I pre-programmed waypoints of known fishing holes around Excursion Inlet, where we were staying. The unit worked like a charm.
If I had anything to complain about, it would be the included basemap. It was fine in showing coastline when the weather was good, but one day fog limited visibility to about 150 feet. The basemap did not show several small islands in the vicinity of our camp, so I knew I could not rely on the unit exclusively for instrument navigation alone.
For the price, Garmin really should include more free software that the owner can use on the unit."

Garmin GPSMAP 76CSx,November 27, 2006
By Willeyfrom Waterbury, Vermont
"This is the most amazing instrument that I have ever used. The GPS is so strong that it will pick up satelites in an auto or in a concrete structure which is very handy compared to my less expensive model that you have to take out in the open to get a reading. The map is so neat that I use it in my auto to map my waypoints and routes. Just print in an address in any state such as Texas where my daughter lives and it gives a map of the location and you can zoom in right to the driveway all in a matter of a few seconds. I am also a hunter and it is a real secure feeling when you are in the big woods to know and be 100% sure where your truck or camp are. I also like the magnet compass that works even when the instrument is sitting on a stump. It can also be used on the water in your boat as well. This is an amazing instrument and I would recomend it to anyone."

"This Garman GPS is great. The full color maps light up and are easy to navigate through. With many differents icons to choose from, there will be no comfusing what you are marking as a waypoint. The large memory capacity will help with all those waypoints too. The unit is a little large but with all the advantages you won't care. Cabela's ran a great selling price so I couldn't say no. I didn't even get into the computer hook-up and mapping ease."

Very Nice,November 22, 2006
By Yuperfrom Michigan
"I'm loving my Garmin GPS Map76CSx. I kayak on Lake Superior a lot, so I bought the nautical charts from Garmin and loaded them into the unit. It is a most useful navigational device. I love checking my progress on the map and seeing how straight a course I've managed on crossings to islands and such. I've dipped the unit into to water to check the waterproofing, and it's fantastic. Incidental spray on the deck where I usually carry the Map76CSx is totally not a factor. Also, the unit floats as advertised. Mostly I check my mileage and speed, but the Map76CSx will do much more. Best of all, my batteries last much longer than the advertised battery life of 10 hours. I always get at least 15 hours, probably because I'm not using the backlight feature. Now I suppose I'll have to get the Garmin topo maps and load them into the Map76CSx as well, so I'll have detailed plotting on land, too. The base map is okay for traveling on highways, but there's no detail such as small rivers, which I also like to kayak."

Great unit,November 4, 2006
By msucogfrom Georgia
"this unit is years ahead of the other units. the sirf antenna lets the unit receive signal indoors or in your pocket...to within about 10'! the static compass lets you see north is real time (without having to move). add on the Garmin mapping and you've got a great tool for hiking or for working. to help with those bulky downloads, the usb cable makes it happen within seconds. if you're really good, you can generate your own topo maps from data obatined at the USGS website and upload them to your unit. this unit is the best there is...plain and simple..."

"Easy to get started, I didn't look at the manual for several weeks. I use for both trip routing as well as various outdoor sports. This unit has exceptional signal availability even inside of my SUV. I use with the optional CityMaps software in a very rural area and have been able to get accurate directions the vast majority of the time."
