"We were very happy with the cooler. Put a block of ice in it and it lasted for four days not 5 but we still think that it did the job because it was on very warm days in Utah that it was outside."

Coleman Xtreme 52 quart cooler,
October 7, 2009
By Dan187
from Tacoma, WA
|
"Good general purpose cooler. Most of my excursions are only weekend affairs at this time in my life. This cooler claims it will keep ice for 5 days. I could only get that if i packed it with nothing but ice, kept it closed, and stored it below freezing. I find that It is adequate for 2 days, but after that my ice pretty much all melted. However that doesn't mean this cooler doesn't work for me. Just don't expect to be able to load up with food and beverages and ice and not to need ice again for 5 days."

good cooler, bad to move when heavy,
September 11, 2009
By weeman
|
"As far as coolers go, this model is pretty good for the price. I just went 2 days with this cooler filled to capacity with hard frozen fish, the cooler was taped closed and never opened. At the end of the trip, 90% of it was still near rock hard. The top layer of fish was softest and flexible but not unthawed. I will say i had another brand of extreme cooler and my fish was 100% ice hard after a similar duration but that cooler also cost a bit more.
For the bad..this design of the wheeled cooler is not what you want if you need to move a lot of weight for any distance. I would like to see how far the average person can pull this cooler over soft ground with 85cans of pop in it before they switched arms. For short very short distances, this wheel design is fine. I have this criticism only because this is a "wheeled" cooler which means it's mobile and meant to move items easily. Is it easier than carrying it in both hands? most certainly. If you tend to move heavy loads over any distance (ex while travelling or in airports) do yourself a favor and get the cube shaped wheeled coolers with the solid unhinged suitcase/luggage style handles that pull out vertically where you tilt the cooler like a wheeled suitcase. The load is nearly 100% on the wheels in the cube design versus this long cooler design where 50% of the weight is hanging on your arm because the wheels are at the opposite end of the cooler, plus your fighting with a swinging, hinged handle. I've had this type before and I got another this time only because i was in a time crunch and few shopping options. I should say that the cubed design does not go over rocky ground as easily as this type because of the location of the wheels."

amazing cooler,
September 9, 2009
By Kris10May
from Poynette, WI
|
"I used to be a fan of the classic Coleman Steel-Belted green cooler. After a long weekend of camping, I was convinced to come home and order a new cooler. It just didn't hold ice.
I ordered the Coleman Xtreme and am so happy that I did! I went away Wednesday night to Monday afternoon. I filled it on Wednesday night with a big bag of ice and had to buy two small bags of ice on Saturday to replenish and that was it! And I added a case of warm/room temp. beer!
Do not hesitate to order this cooler - you'll love it!"

Coleman Cooler Explained......MUST READ!,
September 4, 2009
By RHanan
from Oakland, CA
|
"I have to say that the cooler selection of Cabela's website is not well explained which is a dis-service because these coolers are the best around for the price. I will explain them in better detail for anyone wanting a Coleman cooler. There are many types of marine coolers Coleman sells. Each is very different and performs differently. They are: 1. Marine 2. Xtreme Marine 3. Xtreme Marine Plus 4. Ultimate Xtreme Marine 5. Ultimate Xtreme Marine Plus 6. Optimax which is in a different category all together. It is sold all by itself on this website as the Cadillac of coolers. Search OPTIMAXX. Marine is the bare bones basic with no claims for amount of days to keep ice. Xtreme Marine claims 5 days with the amount of ice they require which is .75LBS for every Quart the cooler is rated at. A 50 Quart cooler needs 37.5 LBS of ice to last the rated duration of days. KEEP THIS IN MIND. Most reviewers complain about no ice after 3 days but they fail to add enough ice initially or they drain the melted water out (more on this later). Ultimate Xtreme is rated at 6 days for ice with their recommended ice level. The PLUS and Ultimate models come with IR and UV inhibitors on the exterior to fight off the damaging rays of the sun. The Plus and Ultimate models also come with an interior antimicrobial liner. Plus and Ultimate models come with stainless steel hinges. The rest are plastic hinges and no IR & UV exterior and no antimicrobial liners! Another thing to consider which is not mentioned is the size of the coolers. The smaller coolers 36QT and less have thicker side walls so the exterior is still large. The 58QT and above have thinner walls because they will be holding more ice and require less insulation. If you plan on buying a 36 QT or smaller you will be better off getting the 58QT which is only 4 inches wider and 4" longer which will be 62% bigger inside that the 36 QT because of the inner wall thickness difference. Not all models accept a cushion. Check the Coleman website for compatibility. The last item I want to emphasize is the ICE you will be using to keep your cooler cold. Coleman states that it takes 2.5 LBS of ice to cool 1 gallon of room temperature liquid in the ice chest. Always pre chill items in the refrigerator first! This is crucial is you want the maximum days of ice. Always put the ice in last on top of the items to be chilled. Cold air travels downward. Last ice tip is to use cubed ice and block ice together. The percent is something like 25% block 75% cubed. Freeze blocks yourself 24 hours before using a tupperware type container or an empty milk jug with the top cut off. Also don't forget to leave water in the cooler as the ice melts. Do not drain off the water. Melted ice water preserves cubed ice better than empty air. Do yourself a favor and get the Ultimate or Plus models and they will be the best performing, longest lasting units you will ever buy. I have 3 different sizes of them and I love them dearly!!"

Best cooler ever,
September 2, 2009

"My husband is an otr trucker and was tired of constantly replacing his electric cooler. He said he would like to try a regular cooler but it was difficult to find one that would fit in the cab of his truck and was concerned about replacing the ice every day. After looking at all retail stores he suggested we look at Cabelas since you seem to have just about the best of everything. After finding the right size and receiving this cooler he was very surprised to find that the ice lasts at least 3 days! This during the summer heat and in a black truck that stays very warm. Thank you and Coleman for an excellent product."

Needs lock down latch,
August 25, 2009
By IFISHAZ
from Buckeye, AZ.

"I never got to try out the claim on 5 days ice because when I got mine the lid just wont stay shut. It is only held closed by a small lip that catches inside the cooler, mine didn't catch from day 1. I went to the store to look at others (ordered mine online) and some sealed well and others didn't. Even if you get one that seals well, I can't see how over time it wont wear and stop sealing leaving you with a cooler that wont stay shut. I travel alot of harsh 4x4 trails and need the lid to close and stay latched. If it came with an actual locking mechanism to latch the lid it would probably be just fine. Going to take it back and get a Cabela's steel belted one instead (don't like how Coleman changed to a plastic lock mechanism on there steel belts)."

COLEMAN EXTREME,
August 18, 2009
By CATSIRISHMAN
from CHICO
|
"I HAD A CAMPING TRIP IN AUGUST THAT LASTEST 5 DAYS, IN 90+ DEGREE WEATHER, AN HOUR AWAY FROM ANY STORE. I FILLED UP MY EXTREME WITH ICE TO MAKE SURE WE HAD PLENTY AND BY THE END OF THE 5 DAYS I STILL HAD PLENTY OF ICE LEFT OVER. THIS IS THE BEST ICE CHEST I HAVE EVER PURCHASED. THE EXTREME ICE CHEST IS THE ONLY ONE THAT HAS BEEN ABLE TO KEEP THE ICE FROM MELTING. ALL MY OTHER ICE CHEST IN THE PAST COULD NOT KEEP THE ICE FROM MELTING PAST 2 DAYS."

"I bought this cooler for a camping trip this summer and it worked great. It was large enough to fit all of our food for the weekend, and more. It kept food very cold for the three days we used it but I imagine it would have lasted longer. The insulation leaked a very tiny bit after its first use but I have not seen any leakage since."
