salmon killer,November 20, 2009
By thalibutfrom Lynnwood Washington
"I purchased the 9' rod last year and it gave me outstanding performance. Landed 3 big kings at 39,32, and 31lbs. It held up to a 600+ run with 25lb. test line and was able to give me good control at the boat as well. Only problem I had was some pitting of because I failed to wash down the rod after salt use. Just purches another new depthmaster rod today as they are priced right. Great value for the money."

"I use this rod to fish salmon in the pacific ocean. It is one of the best rods I have ever used. Very easy to keep pressure on the fish as it runs. Really a great rod."

Great Trolling Rod,August 10, 2009
By DrHJHfrom Wyoming
"I've used the 7'6" trolling rod the past two years trolling for silver salmon in Alaska, and it has performed flawlessly, with no problems despite being tossed around the boat we rent and the psychotic runs and acrobatics of silver salmon. I just bought another for a friend to use this year."

Great Value, Great product,July 28, 2009
By FishLakeEriefrom Erie, PA
"I've been using these rods for years, open water trolling on Lake Erie for walleye and steelhead on downriggers, planer boards and Dipsey divers. These rods have held up well and I have never had any probelms.
These rods are a great product at a great price."

DepthMaster Trolling Rods,July 14, 2009
By Autopilotfrom Rochester, NY
"Overall the Rods are of good value; I was a little disappointed in the rod action as it was listed as Medium and I would consider it more like a light action Rod.
Additionally, the Rod feels very flimsy and weak; in fact first day out we had one Rod break while trolling with Downriggers. No idea why? Only can assume it was a manufacturing defect. I don't by Cabalas just for the name though, true to their word if not satisfied or if it breaks due to non-negligence; Cabalas replaced it within 3 days.
I would have rated the Rods a 5 start if they were labeled light to medium action; as they are listed I can't go above a 3 star.
I'd rate Cabalas a 5 star though!"

rod breaks easily,May 16, 2009
By klwaldfrom monroe michigan
"I was using the 8ft downrigger rod and it snapped into about two feet from the handle this is the thick part of the rod and should never break there I was walleye fishing and I got hold of a silver bass this type of fish should never be able to break this rod especialy down toward the base of the rod I only own two of these rods and I have had to take both of them back the only reason I had them in the first place was because they were paired up with diawa line counter reels Everything else I own is ugly stick the ugly stick rods are indistructible I will be staying completly with them"

great rods,April 20, 2009
By mswbullittfrom Jasper, MO
"I bought two of the 5' leadcore rods and they are great. The guides are big enough for the lead to deploy smoothly and they handle fish very well. I like the handle length because it's long enough for leverage, but doesn't stick halfway into the boat when it's in the rodholder. Excellent product."

Great action on an affordable rod!,April 2, 2009
By roo123from NC
"I recently purchased two of the 7'6" trolling rods for my boat and really like them. The blanks used have great action on them. The lure/hook ring down next to the handle is a big help for transporting my lure. Only thing I didn't like is the rod seems to be quickly assembled. Not much care was taken in building the rods, but for the price that's what I expected."

8'6" DR model... Casting!,November 27, 2008
By cliffjumperfrom Vancouver Island
"I have a Nitryx reel, spooled w/ 14# mono, that just does not cast well on any of the 12 long casting rods I have. I've tried Hot Sauce, blah, blah...
In desperation, just before donating it to the Sally-Ann, I tried it on one of the Depthmaster downrigger rods, 8'6", that I bought as a Catalina (lc reel) combo, but had not yet used the rod in a downrigger.
Throwing 1 1/2 - 2 oz buzz bombs and 1 oz Kastmasters is now great, and the reel will keep up closely with my Abu's, Cardiff & Cabo's, but only if it's on this rod. I may even try this rig on the river to see how well it float-fishes.
3#-12# fish are great, no 25's or 30's yet on it, so durability & longevity I cannot attest to, but this rod sure can put it out there, even with that doggie reel.
I think it would be a pretty good mooching rod as well as pulling medium Flatfish or larger spoons.
One knock is the reel seat. I prefer cushioned rings to secure my reels, but the price was right, my combos were cheaper than the reels alone.
Cheers!"

Rod Broke,July 23, 2008
By HarleyMarcfrom Wa
"I don't know if it's just the 8'6 downrigger rods but I had one broke on a 10 inch Kokanee. I see that a lot of other people are having this problem with that model too. I'll be stying away from the downrigger rods, but have had good luck with the leadcore and 7'6 trolling models so far."

Last broken Cabela's rod that I buy.,July 22, 2008
By Corky310from Seattle, WA
"These used to be good rods, but I think they changed manufacturers and now my Fish Eagle II and Depthmaster downrigger rods have both been broken on fish. I love the guarantee and great customer service, but I don't like losing fish because of broken rods. I'm going back to my Ugly Sticks and Lamiglas poles."

Broke like a twig,July 10, 2008
By Dainofrom Flathead Lake, MT
"While I have been very impressed the the Cabela's Depth Master reel w/line counter, the combo Cabela's downrigger rod I ordered with it, broke in mid swing while releasing it from the cannon ball. Amazingly, we still landed the fish and Cabela's has been great with the exchange. I'm upgrading back to my old reliable - an Ugly Stick."

A rod that delivers,May 5, 2008
By RiponJfrom California
"I recently purchased a Cabela's Depthmaster Trolling Rod for use on Pardee Reservior here in the central California mountains. One hundred yards from the dock we picked up a 13 inch Kokanee. The fishing continued in this manner until our ice chest was full to the legal limit. The rod, matched to a Cabela's reel, worked as well as any rod that I have ever used. I would recommend this combination to anyone who wishes to lower the fish population in whichever lake he chooses. RiponJ"
