Really Tough But Really Boring, July 28, 2009

"I'll start by confessing that I have a half dozen C3/C4 models ranging in age from 1 to 21 years, so I go back a long way with these products. I also have a preference for round reels that is either due to some early emotional imprinting, or the fact that I have large hands and therefore find these reels comfortable for palming.

During this time span every C3/C4 reel has performed almost flawlessly under a variety of conditions and under hard use here in the land of 10,000 lakes. The only problem I've ever had was the occasional need to replace a level wind pawl (the spiral grooved cylinder that moves the line guide). However, these parts cost under ten bucks, and I do the repairs myself.

Truth be told, the only differences between my twenty year old reels and this year's model is the presence of continuous anti reverse and a slightly improved handle. Otherwise, today's C4/C3 models offer what they've always offered: great reliability, simplicity and ruggedness in a boring package. In fact, were it not for the release of the Revo line a couple of years ago, I'd have thought Abu had completely done away with its design department. Despite a stodgy and dated appearance, I rely heavily on my 4600 and 5600 C4 models for bass and pike fishing, respectively. The 6.3:1 retrieve ratio is great for picking up slack line in topwater presentations, and it's a real aid in burning spinner baits and bucktails. Both models have more than enough drag for any freshwater fish, and their simple mechanical brake is all any caster needs.

Note: If you wish to fish bigger crankbaits, or any lure with a great deal of retrieve resistance. go with the C3 series, as its 5.3:1 retrieve ratio is more powerful and less fatiguing on the fisherman."

"I love this reel, i have it paired up with a 7' MH and it casts heavier lures like a dream. Very few backlashes and the ones that i do get are my fault anyways. The only drawback is that if you're throwing lighter lures like small cranks and such the casting distance is pretty short"

"I use these reels for Salmon and Seelhead fishing when trolling or anchored up and pulling plugs. They hold up well and the drags will last for for many seasons. It seems I replace my reel reels about every 4 years. I've used other brands but always buy these C4s for my self."

"This reel is not quite what I expected. I'm primarily a bass fisher and was given this reel as a gift. The retrieve on it is descent, but it is a little gritty feeling. It's not quite as smooth of a reel as the original Ambassadeur. For steelhead fishing its actually pretty good. The only real problem overall is that is tough to cast unless you have a lot of weight on your line or lure because the spool isn't the smoothest spinning."

"Just wanted to add the 6600 will take 280 yds of 12 lb mono for reference as I loaded it with that to practice on before I will put some braided on it. It mates very well with the cabelas tourney trail 665-2 rod in the 8-17 lb line, so it is not too large even though you get killer line capacity. When i swap out for braided, I hate to think of the capacity- prob will go will like 30 lb super line and expect to see over 300 yds of that on it. I see no reason to go lighter in line as you can always add a lighter leader on end of line if you feel the need to . Reel is smooth as silk and the anti reverse is very crisp. Get this unless you can afford the abu record which is about as good as it gets in this size reel. Abu is quality through and through and can always get repairs/parts unlike some of the stuff you see out there that you might think is a good buy for $20 less. workmanship is really a surprise though it should not be as my abu ultra light spinning reel has about the best drag that I could find out there regardless of cost."

"I have both 5600C4 & 6600C4 reels, I use the 5600 for salmon fishing in the rivers, and the 6600 for both river and Puget Sound fishing from the boat, both reels are excellent reels, great drag and power for fighting big salmon, I have caught my share of big salmon with both of these reels."

I purchased my first Ambassadeur, August 19, 2008

"in 1978. Since then I have used the 5 series, the 6 series and the 7 series. My 1978 6 series (6500) is in top condition and have been used in salt water and salmon rivers alike (I always rinse it immediately with fresh water after use). The only problem I have ever had with an Ambassadeur was when I purchased a 2 speed 5 series from Cabelas. After 15 years the gears did not work and it locked the spool causing it to snap of the line when i tried to throw. I tried several times to repair it but finally threw it in the bin. I am now replacing it with a C4 - 5 series. And it should last until 2038 minimum! Then I will be 75 and I'll still be using my Ambassadeur's."

"Very cool reel... Gave this reel/rod combo one to my son for Christmas. I envy him. I have many Abu reels. Watching my 13 year old son release a 10-13 lb Sockeyes time after time (with nothing more than keeping a little oil on hand) just sells me to be happy with the choice in Abu products"

"It’s a very good choice. I had an Abu Garcia in past, an Ambassadeur 6501 and it has been lost. I've got good cat-fishies in Pantanal Brasil, about 20-25 lbs.

"I used this reel with braided line float fishing for steelhead. It casts well and the drag worked well when fighting a fish. I think my float rig weighed about an ounce and I had good control . I purchased another reel just like it for a spare for next year."
