Record 50,October 1, 2009
By Yellowcatmanfrom L.A. California
"I own 13 Ambassadeurs and the latest Record 50 I recently purchased is the finest of them all in regards to smoothness and the ability to cast lighter lures than most of the earlier models, in this case as light as 3/16 oz., which qualifies it for a variety of finesse presentations along with power fishing techniques as well..."

Smoothest Ambassadeur I have owned,August 2, 2009
By Redfishingfrom Berwick, LA
"I have had my RCN40 for almost a year now. Like some others have done I replaced the brass bushing in the spool with a stainless steel bearing. She out performs all other Ambassadeur reels I have owned from the old red 5000 to the 4600C5. I use her to fish redfish with artifical bait and she will cast the light and heavy baits with no backlash and plenty of distance. Her drag is as smooth as her cast no matter the size of the fish. Like all other baitcasting reels on the market you have to clean this reel regularly. Water will get inside her after hours of casting. Regular cleaning is especially true when fishing in salt water. The only negative I have with this reel is her weight. She is about an ounce and a half heavier than her sister reels. This does make a difference after hours of casting. But this is the sacrifice you make for a more quality reel."

Not a ton of use... yet...,July 24, 2009
By rudymuskyhunterfrom Indiana
"Well, there's really only three things I don't like about this reel. First, I bought the larger #60 Reel and it only has one reel knob. I got fairly used to this, however, within the first three days of use. Second, it is a 5.3:1 ratio reel. For musky fishing, which is all I'll use this reel for, it can wear you out reeling in cowgirls, bucktails, and the like. Third, the bait click mechanism sticks. I haven't used it for trolling as of yet (but plan to in October). I hope I don't get too annoyed and/or the clicker fails when I most need it.
That being said, (a) I haven't used the reel very much and (b) by all accounts, it is BETTER than any musky reel I've used to date. I was really torn between buying this and the Calcutta. I chose this reel because it was about $80 cheaper. I have to say, it is true, the thing CASTS A MILE! I'm not very tall and have short arms, so long casting has always been less-than-stellar-trait of mine. Now, I cast just as long as all my 6' + friends. Also, this reel does not backlash like other ABU models. I believe this is due to the weighted anti-backlash system. Regardless, it is super-smooth and feels sturdy when I reel it in. So far... so good."

Great service. Mediocre product.,July 23, 2009
By nqjudo
"I was not impressed with the castability of this reel and adjusting the centrifugal brake is awkward compared to many other similar products on the market. I gave the reel 4 stars because I believe that a dealer service counts as part of the overall experience and I was able to exchange the reel hassle-free. By itself the reel is good for 3 stars."

ABU record,July 23, 2009
By StriperWackerfrom Cold Spring KY
"For the price there is not a better fishing reel made. I did make the mistake of buying the wiffle spool model for striper fishing. I wish I had a little more line capacity. The HC model with the traditional handle is the perfect choice. But I can not complain. This reel is an absolute joy to cast and reel. It handles like a dream and is also very appealing to the eye. Side by side in my opion this reel outfishes the Calcutta and is just slightly behind the Luna which is $200 more expensive. With this reel you can cast havy and light buts alike virtually backlash free. The drag is unbelievably smooth and powerful. I would buy two of these before I got a Luna and wouldn't trade my two year old record for a brand new Calcutta Te."

For Peacock Bass in Brazil, this is the reel!,May 25, 2009
By JungleExplorer
"I have fished for over 30 year from the Arctic to the Amazon. I must say that while most reels will do for light everyday fishing, but when you head for river peacock bass in the Amazon you had better be ready. Pound for pound, a river peacock bass pulls many times harder then anything you have ever had on your line. I have seen a 5 pound peacock bass snap 30 pound spider wire on a straight pull. I have lost many bait caster reels, even Abu Garcias to these fish. In 2005 I took the Abu Garcia 6500c down and it lasted 1 month before the gears were totally stripped. In 2006 I took the Abu Garcia Record RCN50. The first thing I noticed when I first casted this reel was the incredible distance I got on my first cast. Then came the silky smooth retrieve. And last came the impeccably smooth drag system. After 6 months of hard fishing in the Amazon, hundreds of Peacock bass, 30+lb Dog Fish, Tiger Cats and countless other hard fighting fish, this reel worked the same as the day I took it out of the box. My primary real used to be a Shimano Calcutta 200b. But no matter how I adjusted my Calcutta it could not cast 3/4 of the distance on my Record. I would cast the Record hundreds of times a day and if I got a single backlash it was rare. I bought a Shimano Corvalus for my 14 year old son to use and it lasted about 2 months before it broke and he did not catch that many large Peacocks on it.
The bottom line is this. You cannot touch a real of this quality for less then $300 anywhere. I personally have found my reel for the rest of my life. I hope they never change a thing on this reel."

"Sand bass fishing "Richland Chambers" I had the smallest Record RCN40 and my Shimano Chronarch and got better distance with the Record.Still love my shimano the best but distance casting the record won. Great reel for Garcia fans and like most of Garcia's reels you will be fishing it 30 years from now. They take allot of torture over the years and just keep going."

Great Reel,January 10, 2008
By AbuFanfrom Lynnwood, WA
"Sampled the reel in a sporting goods store and knew that abu garcia made great products so after much thought I ordered the reel. I already know that abu garcia makes great products since my Dad uses their reels and I recieved my first bait casting reel about 10 years ago. The first day that I was able to use the reel I was instantly impressed with its casting and how smooth the retrieve was. This reel is bigger and a little heavier than my other abu garcia bait casting reel. The six ball bearings made a nice smooth retrieve and the thumb position was perfect. A few casts in I had a hit on a pink salmon and the reel did wonderful on getting the fish in. I was impressed and very satisifed with how the reel handeled! I am so impressed with abu garcia that I also own the Cardinal 104 for trout fishing and looking to invest in a Revo serise for bass fishing!"

Musky catching machine,January 8, 2008
By go2eleven2from NW Indiana
"This is a smooth operating reel that gets the job done. I compared it with the similarly priced Shimanos and here is the tell. Crank down your drag as far as you can and then operate the Shimano, it's harder to reel in. The Record continues to operate unaffected by the change. I recently purchased an Okuma from Cabela's as well - pure junk. It did not make it through one trip. I would definitely recommend the Ambassadeur Record as it has been a very reliable an smooth operating reel."

ABU RECORD,August 7, 2007
By NORMIKETfrom CAPE COD, MA.
"I am in the minority. I purchased the Record 60 for saltwater surfcasting. 3 mos later, I bought another for my son. The first trip in spring '07 (3-day trip) I lost the drag completely, then it came back w/o explanation. Fished normally for next 1/2 day and lost it again..no explanation. Ok, figure I got the odd defective reel. Next trip, I lost the drag again and then my son lost drag on his reel. On BOTH reels, the drag would vanish and then come back after several hours, or a day..it varied. Neither of us are novices at surf casting and/or surf equipment. To keep this short, we returned both reels and purchased from different manufacturer. ps; the Record casts BETTER then advertized though."

Excellence = ABU GARCIA.,July 9, 2007

"Well this is another round reel to my fresh water arsenal. Yes if you are serious at fishing and you need to be sure of next trophy, you know you will count on any of almost ABU GARCIA reels. I have landed 8 pound fishes even with the cheapest ABU GARCIA models and I have the same confidence to do it with this premium reel. They will never fail."

Wonderful!,July 6, 2007
By Abuholicfrom Socal
"This Record 60HC has 4BB + 2RB! SMOOTH out of the box! Since I bought this along with a 6600C5Mag(on sale under bargain cave), did some tweek. Took level wind part from C5(has 2BB on each end) and left side spool BB to 60HC. Now my Record 60HC is capable of casting a country mile with 7BB + 2RB!!! Works perfect!!! I spooled it with 50# Powerpro and 17# Fluoro topshot for 1 day saltwater fishing in Socal. It works great for Calico bass, Bonito, Halibut and even for local Yellowtail. Wonder what happened to my C5Mag? It has 1 additional BB I bought to make 2 BB + 1 RB. I love that mag control too."

"Right out of the box without any personal adjustments; the Record Reel operated smoothly and precisely as I have grown to expect Ambassadeur Reels to perform. I have used Ambassadeur Reels for over 35 years, and the same outstanding quailty is still built into every reel. Thanks to Cabela's for making this product available to their customers."
