Landing tough saltwater gamefish demands a reel that's geared specifically to handle not only the fish themselves but also the harsh environment in which they live. The Tiagra A series from Shimano handles these tasks with authority. Reels boast A-RB (Anti-Rust Bearings) that are specially treated stainless steel and at least 10 times more corrosion resistant than standard stainless steel ball bearings. The spools are made from cold forged aluminum then machined to provide an extremely dense, solid construction that can withstand the heavy drag pressures the reels can apply. Chrome-plated sideplate screws prevent corrosion. The two-speed gearing uses two sets of gears that are always engaged for quick, easy gear ratio changes even under load. A ratcheting drag lever eliminates the chance of the drag lever backing off due to boat vibration and allows for more precise adjustment. Twin Disk Drag System uses two drag disks and a floating drag plate to effectively double the drag surface, which provides a wide range of settings and increased durability (16 and 130 models only). The clicker increases the tension on freespool and activates a clicking alarm when a fish bites. Permalube lubrication improves freespool while maintaining protection and durability of moving parts. Metal series frames keep moving parts in precise alignment for increased efficiency and durability. Frames are machined from solid aluminum pipestock, which makes them incredibly rigid and strong for ultra tight tolerances. The Offset Ergonomic Power Grip is offset on multiple axes to allow natural hand, arm and wrist angles to improve comfort and power (TI12 and TI16 models have Ergonomic Power Handle).

    Work it, July 31, 2009
By whitetailphantom from Dauphin Island, Al

"I have been working on charter boats in Dauphin island Alabama for four years. Of all of the trolling combos, the tiagra is the most numerous. Countless captains and deckhands as myself love these reels. The drag is so much smoother than the competitors. These reels are built to last! Weekend after weekend we reel in 170 pound tuna and these things have yet to break! I love this product as a deckhand and a fisherman!"

    tiagra 50, December 11, 2006
    By a7ewizard

"I bought a 50A to use on a San Diego long range trip. Spooled with 130# spectra and 100# mono top shot. I landed 3 tuna to 215 pounds. I had over 500 yards of line on this reel....plenty of line capacity and plenty of drag. Reel was flawless! Comfortable handle, drag settings stayed put."

SHIMANO TIAGRA TROLLING REEL, November 7, 2006
    By MahiMahi from Singapore

    "Plus:

    1:Solid built.All aluminium material.Not diecast.

2:Loudest clicker alarm to signal a strike while trolling.

3:Easy pre-set dial for adjustment of pre-set drag.

4:4 ball bearing for the smooth turning of the reel spool.

    5:Solid one piece rod clamp.

    6:Large disc drag material.

    7:Available in various models.

    Minus:

1:Left side plate is not one piece.Meaning you can remove both sides which is not a good thing. As these are held by screws.Eventhough the reel cage is one piece.

2:Older model other than the "A" version, has the tendency for the lever drag to slide downwards due to the vibration of the boat while trolling.Newer model resolves this issues.

3:Reel footings are rivet to the reel cage.It would be nice if it can be made thicker and screw mounted.

    Conclusion:

Not a bad product if you consider to buy them. These are made to last.I have used them for numerous fishing trips and have yet to send them in for servicing. The version that I owe is the Tiagra 50W.The reel has been with me almost a decade.

Pick one of those reel bag to go along with your reel as these can provide the necessary protection such as when you packed them into your suit-case for those long trips. It will serve as a protection from those harmful UV rays which can damage your line.

Above all,you can fish with confidence with this reel.
