Simple to Use / Great for Groups, July 24, 2009
By cbHoo from Ohio

"I generally like the Base Camp a lot (I'll get to the but below). I used the Base Camp for a week long backpacking trip earlier this month (July) in the Porcupine Mountains (Michigan UP) with a group of scouts and leaders. When we got to camp, we would fill up the bag and let it go while we were setting up camp. No pumping required. Couldn't be any easier!

The "but" is that we only got about 10% of the recommended 200 gal. filter life before it slowed way down to a modest trickle. Per Katadyn Customer Service, there is a clear algae in this area (upper great lakes, MN, WI, Boundary Waters, etc.) during the summer that gums up all filters so that the life of filters are greatly reduced. I don't know if this is true but we only got similar life from our pumps by Katadyn and MSR as well. Also, there is no way to "protect" the filter in the Base Camp from mucky water like you can using coffee filters over the intake of a pump. You get whatever you scoop up or dump into the bag. (I don't know if putting large coffee filters or a bandanna around the cartridge would work or make any difference but would be worth trying.)

With the filter limitation, this is a simple way to go for filtering a lot of water for groups. I probably will not use this for small groups - say, a couple people.

MINNESOTA BOUNDRY WATERS TRIP, July 9, 2009
By 31INCHEYE from CRYSTAL, MN

"THE FIRST THING WE DID WHEN WE ARRIVED AT OUR CAMPSITE IN THE BWCA WAS TO SET UP THE KATADYN BASE CAMP UNIT. IT WAS EASY TO SET UP JUST HANG FROM A TREE LIMB. WE HAD IT DRIP RIGHT INTO A COLAPSABLE 5 GALLON WATER JUG, NO PUMPING AT ALL. MYSELF, MY WIFE, MY TWIN SONS ALL WERE SHOCKED AT THE FRESH TASTE OF THE WATER WITH NO ILL EFFECTS WHAT SO EVER. JUST BE EXTRA CAREFULL TO NOT CROSS CONTAMINATE FILTERED WATER WITH NON-FILTERED WATER..ITS A KEEPER..."

"We have used this filter, for 4 yrs in elk camp. Our water flows right out just below an old beaver pond and no one has ever gotten sick, it takes out all bacteria. It sure beats pumping gallons of water every day. It will freeze if left out, but during the first week of november at 9500 ft. most things do freeze."

Katadyn Base Camp Filter, December 20, 2008
By Tallhuntingfool from Montrose, CO

"We use this filter all the time when we horseback in the wilderness. It is great! Easy to pack. We did have it freeze solid over night when the temp dropped below zero. We put it in tent and it worked geat after it thawed out! We love it. Wouldn't go camping without it."

Katadyn Base Camp Filter - Outstanding, September 9, 2008
By kazooscouter from Portage, MI

"We purchased our Katadyn Base Camp Filter just before our Boy Scout Troop's 5 day backpacking trip. We were a little concerned about the filter's speed - based on a review that was posted complaining that it was too slow.
There were 8 people, 4 adults and 4 teenagers, on our trek and we were abosultely thrilled with the filter's performance! The filter was quick and the taste was outstanding - no chemical taste at all. We filtered water right out of the river and had no issues with the filter plugging or slowing. The filter held enough water to fill all of the water bottles for our group in one filling of the bag. We were able to keep our packs lighter by taking a single filter for the entire group - which we are all thankful for.
All of us would highly recommend this filter & most of the other adults in the group plan to purchase one for their own backpacking/camping adventures.
This is an outstanding product!!!

Katadyn Base Camp Filter, August 27, 2008

"Our product leaked somewhere around the bottom seal. Little frustrating when you are actually in the BWCA. If company could rework plastic screww nut to have full threads, may have worked better. In our case, it was quicker to actually pump water through hand pump filter."

Excellent Filter, August 12, 2008
By sleddingdennis from Tomahawk, WI

"Use this filter in the Boundary Waters and is just like having a faucet in camp, no more running down to lake/river to get water
for any little camp chore. Flow rate is adequate and fairly compact.

Water Filter, July 20, 2008
By ctcamper from Madison, CT

"This filter seems to work well, although the water flow is pretty slow. We used Lake Umbagog lakewater in it for drinking and nobody, including five kids, got sick. I guess that means it works? Good product overall and nice to have with you gear in case you run out of water, but not that great as a primary source of water, as it takes several minutes just to fill up a pot for cooking."

Great backpacking camp set up., July 16, 2008

"Skip all the water filtering equipment you think you need and use this one. I have a buddy who had one on a 14 mile pack trip and I was so impressed how it served all of our drinking and cooking needs, I got one myself and wasn't disappointed."

Only water purification system you'll ever need, June 9, 2008
By mtnmandan from Appalachians

"Recently purchased a Katadyn Base Camp Micro Filter for myself after seeing how great my dad's performed in the woods. Fill 'er up, hang it from a tree and you're good to go. No pumping, which can be especially helpful at night when you're looking for a drink of water and your bottle is empty. Gravity is your best friend with this bag.
Fill rate is consistent and speedy, especially since it is mostly hands-free. Set your bottle on the ground and let it fill up while you attend to something else.
Filter has a long life and the bag itself is sturdy.
The only detractors about this are the initial assembly (hose was a little difficult to attach to the spiggot) and care necessary during packing in and out (no hard covering or case included- filter can be squashed if packed too tightly).
Resounding 5 out of 5 overall.

does what it's supposed to do, May 27, 2008
By norah from Steuben County, New York

"I'm camp cook and on a usual trip I have to haul in about 10 gallons of water just for cooking. This winter I was going through the online Cabelas catalog and found this filter. I thought about it for about 3 months, then decided to give it a try. I ordered it a couple of weeks ago and used it this past weekend. This filter folds up into practically nothing and weighs the same.....I filled the bag with my handy little battery operated pump and then hung the filter from a tree with the hose inside of a collapsable 5 gallon water jug. I had water for coffee and cooking, and I didn't have to load a ton of water into my car and carry it to the site. I should have bought this filter years ago! The water that I used is from a spring fed creek that is fairly clean, but it has a lot of leaves in it; there was no foul taste and the water was clear (and I sucked up some crud on purpose just to what would happen)
This filter is definitely worth it's sale price, and it will get lots of use in the coming years!

Katadyn Base Camp Micro Filter, November 6, 2007
By csutton7 from San Francisco, CA

"This product is great. It packs up small for backpack hunting and it will hold enough water for 2 guys for 4-5 days(maybe more) for camp cooking(backpack style food:instant oatmeal, hot drinks, top ramen, etc... and a few water bottle refills). Although you don't need to filter water if your using it for cooking, the filtering will come into play for cleaning and making any cold mix drinks. This probably goes without saying, but if you get into freezing weather you will need to protect it from freezing, but only so you can get the water vs having a bag of ice. Again a very good product that I feel is a must have item when camping. chris sutton"

Base Camp system and Micro Filter, September 17, 2007

"Couldn't be more pleased. It is NOT for backpacking water around but if you are camped near any water source at all this is the way to go. 10 days in the Idaho wilderness with the only water source a very silt filled stream. With two of us using the water we used two filters total in those 10 days and had crystal clear water. It purifies even faster than advertised. 4 liters takes about 15 minutes tops."

Gets the job done!, September 12, 2007
By FlyfishermanMN from Minnesota

"I took this to the boundary waters canoe area in May. The guy I went with always boils his water. He couldn't believe how easy this thing was to use. He was also amazed at how quickly it filtered water. He's buying one for his next trip. I also took it to Voyageurs National Park for a week in August. It easily filtered enough lake water for my family of six. I'd buy another one without hesitation."

"A group of 6 of us used this filter for a week on a canadian fishing trip. We filtered all of our drinking water and it worked great! The water tasted as good as any that I have tasted. Although the filter worked very good, I would probably install a new cartridge in it before the next trip. Very satisfied!"
