Hobo Pie Irons,

"I remember these as a kid camping with my folks and were always an attention getter with the friends we camped with as they were hard to find back then. I was very happy to see these at Cabela's one day and I bought the square one and the round one. Myself and my kids love using them on the camp fire to make individual pies! We use bread and fruit pie filling from a can to make fun and tasty desserts around the camp fire."

"One of them broke 5 days after we bought it. One of our kids were just using it by the fire and the top of it where the two irons were held together broke off. I thought they would be heavy duty."

It Broke,
September 7, 2009
By Anonymous
|
"I gave it 2 stars because we made one pizza with it for our friend and it turned out great! Unfortunately, my husband opened it to make it for the 2nd time and the latch broke off completely. We followed the directions for care and seasoning to a T, so there really isn't any reason for it. We were SO disappointed... and hungry!
I'm hoping that this was a faulty one and that when we send it back to the company, the new one that comes will be fine, which is why I still recommended this product to others. I think you know that my rating will change next time if it does the same thing. Hoping you all have better luck!"

"They worked GREAT !!!! Used them on a recent ATV trip on the Arrowhead. I would recommend that you have one for each person that is eating - we had 4 people and 2 irons - so it took a while . Got the cookbook as well - highly recommend. I would like to see you(Cabela's) offer the carrying bag that is shown on the pie iron website."

"I thought it would be great to have the double pie iron so that more than one person could eat creations from it, but I didn't realize how heavy it would be! Only if you can support it on something substantial over an open fire will you be able to use it."

Perfect Lunch or Desert,
August 3, 2009
By SpryOldDuck

"These are well made irons, heavy enough to cook nicely without burning but still easy to use. A hobo pie sandwich for lunch in cool or cold weather is unbeatable and making a tasty desert for dinner - escpecially camping - is the ultimate treat (hand crank some ice cream to complete your visit to heaven)
Get the cook book if you've never used one of these before!"

How did I camp-cook without this?,
July 9, 2009
By HappyCamping2

"I love this pie iron. I have been looking at these for a long time, but would never buy one. I saw a demo at a local Cabelas store and it looked pretty easy. I watched for sales and haunted the Bargain Cave. Finally I broke down and bought the double square pie iron. The next day I was back at the store and in the Bargain Cave I found a little round one and a little square one. The price was right so I bought both and now had three! The little round and square had been used, but not seasoned. This weekend they proved their value and place in my camping equipment. You really have to allow the time to season them. Wash, dry, oil, heat, wash, dry, oil, heat, I oiled and heated one more time for good measure. The trial run was a package of pop open cinnamon rolls. One in each of the round and square and two in the double. The fire I was cooking over was in a Wisconsin campground where you have the fire ring with a grill that flips on or off half the ring. I had lots of coals under the grill area and the pie irons were not actually on the cpals. I wanted a slower controlled heat. The cinnamon rolls were perfect!!! Crispy on the outside, and perfectly cooked on the inside. I have baked in a dutch oven and got the same good result with these little pie irons. Dont forget the frosting that comes with the cinnamon rolls. I also used the double with the ridged surface to grill steak...excellent result. On the same one I cut a small zucchini in half, oil, pepper, salt and cook closed for 5 min or so and then open up to cook off the moisture and crisp up a little. I made a grilled sandwich. The bread I used was horrid but other than that it was perfect.
It was interesting that I was using no pans and so had no clean up and felt I was eating better then if I was cooking over my stove. After cooking the steak, I turned the cooking surface over the fire and burned off the stuff stuck to the griddle. When it cooled I took a little piece of a stick and scraped it down (I have kept that piece of stick in my cooking eqpt.), oil and rub it down.
This same trip, I had bought a liner for my tent floor. I kept the plastic packaging cover from that liner and the double pie iron fits perfectly inside. I can see what is in there, it will stay clean and my other camping stuff wont get the oil from the cast iron as well as it is not perfectly sealed up so it wont rust. I had some other left over case from something that the two little pie irons fit in for storage.
This is a camping must have. I wish I had not waited so long. I know there are lots of recipes to explore as well as I just found out there is a waffle maker....I have to have one of those! Thanks to Cabelas for having those instore demonstration days. You helped me see how this product worked. I needed that visual."

Blackberry pie,

"These pie irons make wonderful berry pie (when berries are in season). Put your first slice of bread(butter side down) in the pie iron. Pick wild berries and put them on top of the slice of bread. Sprinkle the berries with a little sugar, put the top slice of bread on (butter side up), fasten the iron and cook. You have a home made berry pie. P.S. The wild berries are so much better tasting than the cultivated ones.
Ruben sandwiches are great in these too."
