good for backpacking, August 10, 2009

"I hike a few weeks each year and have found this inexpensive tent does well in all situations. Condensation is sometimes an issue but all in all I like my tent."

poor product, July 28, 2009

"the product "appeared" to be a nice item, but on the first outing, one of the guy out ropes snapped, and the tent immediately began to leak around the hole in the seam."

Trekker Solo Bivy, July 25, 2009
By dizzmcfunk from out luma way, California

"i bought this bivy just like you with out knowing what this bivy actually looks like and feels like inside. I just had to order it because of its great price. Here are couple specs that they left out that people planning on actually using this bivy would like to know.

First off, When rolled up tight in its bag it is approx. 15" L. x 6" W. x 4.5" H. and weighs approx. 3.5 lbs. The contents of this bivy contain as follows: bivy (flame resistant but not fireproof fabric) with connected guy ropes, 8 stakes, 3 fiberglass poles two of them 3.5 feet for the front A-frame and one 2 foot pole for the back of the bivy. The back of the bivy is shorter than the front. The two front poles fit into 3 pockets on each corner of the front A-frame. The top of the back pole fits into a pocket at the top rear of the bivy. The bottom of the back pole is suppose to be pushed into the ground hold the back of your bivy upright, This feature would make it more difficult on certain surfaces. The first thing the instructions tell you to do stretch it out and stake it down so you couldn't set this bivy up on rock or concrete if needed. This Bivy is not bottomless, it is sealed by seam with the bottom fabric. There are 4 guy ropes in the back, front and both sides. These ropes are important because if you don't tie them or stake them you wont have very much room in your bivy for they pull out the center area. There isnt enough room in this bivy to keep much more than one average size person comfortably and not much room for a big pack. It has one door being in the front. the door is just like any other door on any tent it even has a mesh layer you can use. It does get very hot in this tent because of the bad ventilation, it can feel like being in a plastic bag. I live in Northern California so i dont have to worry about to much rain except in the rainy season yet, some areas have more moisture than others even in the summer. It says all over the box that all the seams are taped but if your still worried about getting rained on, you can buy a tent seam sealer practically anywhere. water can still get through alot of fabric under high winds so tie it tight and stay away from the sides of the tent.

For me personally this bivy wasn't what i expected as far as the bivy itself mostly because there is no info at all about it online... just these reviews and 1 whole picture. What it comes down to is when your feet get "itchy" and you feel like just taken off on a long bike/hiking trip, any shelter is going to be welcoming. this bivy works well for what I use it for.

Excellent, June 6, 2009
By TheeKidd from Escanaba, MI

"This tent is excellent for me, im 5' 9" and it fits me perfect. As for anyone taller than 6' 0" i would not recommend it because it would be to cramped for you. Overall this tent is great. As for durability it is great also, for the price is unbeatable."

Little Tent, April 23, 2009
By Donnie246 from Tennessee

"I found this tent waterproof to a point, but in a downpour it leaked a little; I had an 8 x 8 tarp with me that I used for a fly cover the next time I went out and it worked perfectly. Don't forget to buy extra tent pegs for the tarp. For the money I don't think you can beat it, especially if you're going to the outback."

Not bad Not great, April 16, 2009
By MjRidder from Boston Ma

"I bought this bivy thinking I would use it for motorcycle camping. Its light weight and small pack size is very attractive. I ended up going on a two week camping trip in Hawaii this winter and had some good nights and bad nights in it. If its raining, its miserable. If its nice out, its great. I'm also on the shorter side....5'8 and fit in w/o a problem. If you are approaching the six foot mark, you're probably gonna be uncomfortable. I won't be using this on any future trips, I upgraded to a more expensive back packing tent w/ a seperate rain fly. I learned my lesson....no rain fly equals a condensation nightmare. Only time i'll be packing this tent now is on a short overnight hike or as an emergency shelter on longer day hikes, should I find the sun setting before I can get out."

Good Value, April 8, 2009
By laramie01 from Laramie,WY

"I purchased the bivy for backpacking in Wyoming. My kids and I camped several times in protected but cold areas. The bivy was large enough for me (6' 1") and alloved room to roll around in. The kids thought the bivy was great for their smaller size. The only down side was the condensation. It froze on the tent most nights, but in warmer areas dripped on the kids. Expect to replace the cordage and tent pegs as soon as you buy it unless you will only be camping in someone's backyard. Overall happy for the price."

Excellent for what it is!, December 18, 2008
By WestCamp from Columbus, GA

"I've had this tent going on three years now and it has handled excellently. I'm a fairly small guy and needed a light backpacking tent; this did the trick! It seriously sets up and takes down in about 2 minutes flat, and weighs little of nothing. As others have said it's not roomy, but it's not intended to be. Seams come pre-silled and tent will keep you fairly dry. Once had a heavy, night-long rain and aside from a couple of drips and the material being wet to the touch, I was dry. My ONLY complaint with this tent is that it seems to not ventilate well in cold weather. I've been twice camping within the past year in 30+/- degree weather and each time upon awakening the inside of the tent was damp. It's decently warm and will keep the wind off of you, but it is not a cold weather bivy. Overall a HUGE bargain."

Trekker Classic Bivy Tent--small means small!!, November 3, 2008
By Alcorn from Richmond, Kentucky

"Ordered the Trekker Classic Bivy Tent as a one-man tent. It really is for one person, and definitely not a big one. It was just too small--I am 6'3" and about 220lbs, and it felt like I was hanging out of it. When I lay on my side, my shoulder would rub the top of the tent. Owned a one-man/single person tent before, and it was comfortable.
This is not a bad tent, but if you are a pretty good size, you'd better go with a larger tent.
Also, it could use a roof vent along the top, to keep out condensation.

Trekker - Classic Bivy Tent, October 23, 2008
By dougbuz from Virginia

"I bought two bivy tents for my sons who are in cub scouts. They were able to set up the tents themselves after watching me put one up first. My 8 year old son used the tent at a recent scout campout in Virginia where the temperature was in the 50s at night. He stayed warm and comfortable and was very proud that he didn't need any help in setting it up. The tent was small enough to put in his backpack and very light. Although it is probably not large enough for an adult to be comfortable in, it is a great tent for youngsters."

a little awkward, August 14, 2008
By wannabeehiker from Michigan

"The bivy is ok for what it's intended for which is sleeping in. It's not big enough for two people unless they are kids. The line is in the way to get into the tent and is very awkward to get into. The string must have came off the stake 2-3 times while i was trying to get into it once. It is not big enough to change clothes in either and I would not recommend it to someone who is claustrophobic. I did not get wet when it rained but the inside wall was wet to the touch, which always happens.
The only real complaint I have is that it was very awkard to get into.

Can't beat the price, June 4, 2008
By Jeddmon from Lancaster County, PA

"I backpack about 3 times per year, I wanted a lightweight solo tent and I didn't want to pay big bucks for it. If that is what your looking for then this is the tent. It works just fine, its cheap and it puts a roof over your head. Will it leak when it rains? Probably but any nylon tent will and I don't care what you paid for it. Its just big enough for one person. I'm 5'10" and a solid 190lbs and I can get in and out of it just fine."

It's not a tent, it's a bivy, September 10, 2007
By solohiker from Minnesota

"I recently purchased the Trekker to use as an alternative to my solo bivy. It works well for this purpose, and has met my expectations.

I typically hike solo on three to four day trips in northern Minnesota. In general, I try to keep my load to a maximum of 20-25 pounds, and limit my "basic three" (bag/pad, stove/cookware, tent) to 5-8 pounds in spring through fall, and no more than 10 pounds when it is cold. In the past I have carried a solo bivy, which is little more than a sleeping bag cover. This tent was purchased to give me a bit more room, but without the weight of a tent.

I replaced the steel stakes with aluminum, and the three fiberglass poles with aluminum poles (cut to size) from an older tent that is beyond recovery. With the included hardware, the Trekker weighs the advertised 3.5 pounds, but with aluminum is just over 2 pounds.

I have read several reviews complaining about the size of this shelter, and the absence of a rain fly. It seems to me these reviewers don't know what they are buying, or have unrealistic expectations for this shelter. Although this shelter will accommodate two, it is best used for a single person. A bivy is a minimalist shelter, intended to be small and light. Like most bivy's, this is of single wall construction, which reduces weight, and as a consequence, will have some condensation when it is cold. My solo bivy (which was considerably more expensive, incidentally, and purchased from a well known hiking retailer) is also a single wall shelter has the same issues, and, like this shelter, occasionally requires a quick wipe with my pack towel in the morning.

I have had this on two trips so far, both of which had long soaking rains, sometimes heavy. I did not notice any leaking seams, although I sealed the seams before going on trail (even though they come factory taped). I have done this with all of my tents as a routine matter. The coated nylon adequately shed rain.

Those expecting to purchase a traditional tent (headroom, rain fly, large door, more weight) will be disappointed. A tent this is not. Those interested in a bivy shelter (which is, after all, what is advertised), will find it suitable, particularly for the price. Substituting the steel stakes and fiberglass poles makes it a fine ultralight shelter. If that's not your cup of tea, buy a tent ... and a bigger pack.

Bring a swim suit, August 14, 2007
By WetCamper from Topeka, KS

"Took this tent on a high adventure canoe/hiking trip. It worked fine for the first two nights but the third night when it rained water went right through the walls and soaked everything. I am probably going to try to water proof it myself to see if that will help."
