This coat has ISSUES!,November 24, 2009

"After reading the previous 20 reviews I was a little puzzled that this "systems" parks was so highly rated! I have been using rain-gear and parkas from Cabelas for 15 years in conditions from the wet NW Oregon-Washigton to Alaska and even 7 years in Siberia and this is the worst I've used to date. Yes, it keeps you dry, but a lot of parkas out there will do that and for less money. If you want something to wear for just an occasional hunting trip or to sit in an ice-fishing hut, maybe it will work for you, but again there are other ones that will too. However, if you want something to get out in the elements every day, then you will quickly get disgusted with this coat.
The "gathers" on the sleeves are so tight, that I have to practically rip the material to extract my hands (my hands are normal for a 6', 200 lbs. man.) Actually, I did hear ripping sounds at first! If the liner is installed, multiply this aggravation by 2! Plus, the liner is going to have its sleeves pulled down into the shell - EVERYTIME! One reviewer mentioned this hassle and still gave the product 5 stars! You'll go through this EVERY time you take this coat off!
The inside chest pockets on the liner have a normal hand-width size opening, but they expand in size and go all the way down to the belly! If you put your wallet in there, good luck! It will be like it has been sucked into some cosmic black hole. To get it out, you'll have to take your coat off, turn it upside down, shake it, and hope and pray that your wallet will fall out eventually! You can't reach the bottom of the liner's chest pocket while wearing the coat unless you have been retrofitted with a 5 ft. robotic mechanical arm!
The Velcro securing the outside pocket ripped off the first time I tried to open the pocket! If you close the liner all the way, you'll choke. If it is open, it will not lay down but will act like a mugger attempting to throttle you. It is like a turtle neck except there is a zipper added to make it more uncomfortable.
Why 2 stars instead of 1? The pit vents! This was a MAJOR reason in my decision to buy this system and they ARE nice. The coat it made of some durable material as well and the exterior pockets are well made (the zippers seal). The security pocket is also good. However, all of these features were on my last Cabelas coat, but without the hassles."

"Very nice quality. Wore it the first time out in 35 mpg winds, 40 deg temps and driving rain. Work perfectly - dry and warm. Really helps when your flying in the boat - does a great job of blocking the wind and splash. The neck guard is great. Dont know how I lived without it. Well worth every penny from a functional standpoint. Was even complimented on the looks too.

"I am overall very pleased with this parka. I fished 4 days in the rain, snow, sleet and lots of wind, and stayed dry and, for the most part, warm. I was a bit cool even with the liner on a windy day about 30f. I added a wool sweater and was very comfortable the rest of the trip. The parka is a bit on the heavy side, but isn't restrictive at all. It has a good number of handy pockets. I think I'll get many years of comfortable wear from this parka. I'm really glad I bought it."

"I own high end ski gear and high tech backback gear. I bought the cabelas product site unseen and am very happy. The build is very solid. The vents under the arm are worth the upgrade to me vs. the standard guidewear and I like the fact that no pleat exists in the pockets in the guidewear system.
The liner is pretty cool and I have been wearing it for casual wear. Very cool looking and gets some looks from others.
I'm 6'1 195lbs and typically wear a XL in most things. The Parka in XL was right on the money for me. A Large would be to small and a Tall XL would be too long in the arms.
What not to like??? As others have mentioned, the hood rolling up into the collar would be nice and the hood is made to go up over the chin rather then under it. Does not seem to be a problem to me but the inclusion of these would make this the best rain, ski, or cold weather gear I have ever seen, felt, or held. As is, very good product and I'm happy.
Finally, in terms of use. This is ideal for cold and wind. This will be my November to late April fishing gear. Too heavy for warm weather wear and certainly not lightweight backpacking gear. Running down the lake at 50mph at 50 degree's; perfect!"

"Well, having worn it several times now, I am pleasantly surprised. It seems to be a quality product but maybe a little too stiff and heavy for my taste. Maybe it will soften up with wear. I don't like the collars on the jacket or the liner. The liner collar is too tall and stiff, really the wrong shape. The jacket collar seems to be made to close around and over your chin rather than under it. Not good when the rain is blowing in your face and runs down inside. The liner is quite light to be worn alone except as a light wind breaker but seems to pair well when worn with the parka. I wore it, the parka and liner, in 40s-50s weather and was quite comfortable. It could make a good replacement for my oilskin jacket and liner but seems to have a wider temperature range and should be more waterproof. Not much else on the market that compares."

"The coat has proven to be warm, wind and water-proof with an abundance of pockets. The velcro fasteners are really heavy duty as are the zippers. A minor irritation involves the zip-in liner. Withdrawing my arms is a bit of a chore as the fleece 'sticks' to my shirt sleeves - almost turning the arms inside-out."

"I bought this Parka for my husband for Christmas, and it is just exactly everything he needs... It's definately a three season system. He can wear just the shell for rainy days in the spring, the warm inner jacket in the fall, and both together in the winter. "Overall its everything you said it was. The only thing I would change is the main velcrow in the front to be included as an option. I understand why it's there, however the two-way zipper without the velcrow strip works fine to keep out wind, rain, in extream conditions. As an alternate a similar zipper like the ones on the chest would do the fine in my opinion. Thanks for asking."

"I live in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. A friend and I went hunting caribou on the Island of Atka. We constantly have wind(10-140mph), rain(360 days/yr), and cold temp(10-40F). The matching parka and suspender pants were great during our 5 day hunt. I felt this outfit will stand up to anything Alaska has to throw, and I consider it essential for my moose/bear hunt next fall in interior Alaska. I only found it moderately heavy, but it did not restrict motion."
