"I recently finished building my new fly rod, and looking forward to using it, but the direction's were incomplete and there was not enough rod finish, other than that i would do this again!"

Great for the price,February 9, 2009
By jbhbillfrom Vermont
"I have built this rod before so I can review this even though I haven't tried it because it was a gift and there's 2 feet of ice over all the rivers so there really won't be much fishing done around here anytime soon. It's a great rod for the money and the components are right on. New to this one however, is the included tip top and hook keeper. In others that I have built the tip and keeper had to ordered in addition to the kit. I'd still recommend a Fugi foldable hook keeper instead of the bent wire one with the set. Be sure to check all of the feet I had some ragged edges but they filed fine. The only problem wasn't with the kit but with shipping, it came in a huge box that had to weight 10 times what the kit did. I mean protect the product but this was silly. It seems to be a trend and it should stop."

Fair quality,August 25, 2008
By dobie406from Eagle River, AK
"I purchased the 9' 8wt. The components that arrived were of decent quality, but not all the components arrived. No fighting butt came though advertised, also no arbor material to fill gap between reel seat and blank. If you buy you might want to purchase more finish epoxy and your own choice of thread colors. Good enough kit for beginners."

IM7 STD. FLY ROD KIT,March 24, 2008
By rocketman38from Central Florida
"The kit is complete and the instructions were easy to follow. The quality of the Rod Blank and components is very good. As I have only recently received the kit, and have not finished its assembly, I can not yet evaluate the Rods action(2 wt). This rod should be excellent for my intended use in small ponds on our development, when targeting blue gills and small bass."

good rod,January 16, 2008
By Daltfrom Dryden NY
"I liked the idea of building my own rod so i decided to try it. at first the directions weren't the best but then i found a few good sites to fill in the blanks. i got an 8 wt. rod and the only hard part about the whole thing was the handle. i reemed it out like it said but a tried putting it on and it got stuck. after working on it for a few hours i finally got it off and put the rod together. all in all i like the way it turned out and hope it works well this year. i have casted it in the snow here and seems nice ."

Cabela IM7 8'6" 5 weight,September 12, 2007
By tier11from New Zealand
"I'm from New Zealand and a real keen fisherman. Something I felt I needed to do to for fill my fishing experience was build a rod. I chose the IM7 as a good rod to begin with . As part of the experience I built my own rod warpper using an cordless drill motor. Over the course of several weekends I built the rod and am very pleased with finished result. To date I haven't had an opportunity to fish with it but have put it through its paces in the park, without too much effort could cast all the way to the backing, would highly recommend this rod. Looking forward to buying the next rod. The real test will be when I hook in to a wild 3-5 pound trout or even bigger."

Followed the directions,September 10, 2007
By Firstimerfrom Manitowoc Wisconsin
"Ran into one problem that wasn't mentioned in the directions. I tried to hide the hood reel seat into the handle, but the handle was too thin. Ended up cutting off the cork and reshaping to fit the seat. Turned out very nice. When it came time for the rod finish to be applied. I was quite surprised at how the color of the thread almost turned black from the dark green that came with the kit. Nice balance and feel as an end result. Can't wait to tie into a salmon on the rivers this fall."

Cabela's IM7 Standard Fly Rod Kit,April 20, 2007
By fleaflickr
"I purchased the 6 wt kit and this was the first fly rod that I ever built. It has become the favorite rod my arsenal, almost to the point that it is now the only rod that I fish with. The instructions were almost non-existent, but that's where the internet easily filled the gap. I fish primarily for bass and steelhead and the fast action rod casts superbly, even with the larger bass flies. It handles steelhead nicely and my 8 wt rods are now mostly gathering dust. It is simply a great fly rod."

im7 fly rod,April 7, 2007
By yoderfrom Madison, WI.
"i've been flyfishing for about 5 years now, and i figured it was time for a new rod. I thought, hey, why not build my own. So i got my mom to order me (after some research) a cabelas im7 8 weight fly rod kit. the day i got it, i went to work. this kit has everything! the blank, guides, thread, and handle components! since this was my first custom rod, i didn't have any wrapping tools to apply my thread, but with some time, i got a system going and i wrapped all of my guides in a day (on and off). by the second day, i applied the finish and allowed it to dry for 24 hours. the next day, i was out casting. the quality and satisfaction with building your own rod is unmatched! i would urge anyone in the market for building a custom rod to go for it! in fact, i'm so proud of my rod, i want to build more in the future, and cabelas is the place to do it."

Fantastic,March 19, 2007
By timscaddisfrom Pascoag, RI
"First rod I ever built. I built the 7', 3 wt. Seemed very easy to me. The rod itself handles very well from 8" Brookies to a 4lb. Brown. Tight loops during casting and was able to get it out to 50' with a little work. In close it is very precise. I highly recommend this kit. In fact I'm going to build 2 more for my boys."

Excellent rod!,February 13, 2007
By FlymanIIfrom Allen, Texas
"I purchased the 2 wt rod and I was really impressed. The only complaint I might have was that this was my first build and the instructions weren't very good. I did enough research on the web to counter the lack of instructions. I took the rod on my first fly fishing trip and it casted superb! It is a fast rod that worked well in a small creek environment that I fished. It also fished well in the larger river area that I fished. Overall, it is just about my favorite rod in my arsenal!"
