sneaky pete a bass killer,March 25, 2008
By murph53
"I have used this fly when I want to catch fish. It has never let me down. It has the best top water action on bass and bluegills. You should use the smaller sizes when you want to catch those big gills. It is so easy to use too. I just toss it into the area I suspect a big bass is waiting and leave it alone for a few seconds. I usually wait for the rings of water to settle down and then just twitch it. The bass or bluegill will do the rest. The only negative I have found is the way the hook sits in the water it often catches moss and weeds. This is in no way a big drawback, it just takes some adjusting and good knots so you don't get hung up and loose this great fly. Try it and you will not be disappointed."

Great Universal Fly,November 25, 2007
By airgunneryfrom PA
"This fly is great to have on any fishing trip you are going to go on. You should just through a couple in you fly box just in case the fish just aren't biting what you are throwing at them. Ive caught a variety of fish with this fly from a foot and a half long bass to sunfish half the size of my hand. This lure has great action in the water and creates a nice motion. I would recommend Chartreuse and Chartreuse/Red Bar."

Great warmwater popper,July 16, 2007
By Drunkrussianfrom Hillsborough, NC
"Great popper, attracted bass and blue gill. Surrived many fish, and even an attack from the neighbors dog. With legs, and the slight diving action it worked from the farm pond, to the river."

Sneaky Pete,June 19, 2007
By Blutarskyfrom Mid-Jersey
"This is my go-to fly for bass and large blue gill. From past experience I've learned that you have to have the wiggly legs. This fly dives unlike a popper and that help produce as well. I've had great success with black."

Sneaky Pete,April 9, 2007
By saltboilerfrom Homer, Alaska (I catch bluegills in southern OH)
"While many poppers attract bluegills, I have found the shape of the Sneaky Pete to allow easier unhooking from the small mouth of a bluegill. Bluegills quite often swallow poppers and and are often hard to remove from the small mouth of even large bluegills. The bullet front on the Sneaky Pete makes the popper easier to pull out once the hook (I debarb mine)has been "backed out" with a simple wire type disgorger."

gaines sneaky pete,November 21, 2006
By piscatorialpaulfrom western washington state
"I use the size 10 with a 3 weight fly rod, moderate fast action. I fished this black popper with very very good success on a trout and bass lake at "dark hours" and was rewarded every time! I hooked up with some of the larger trout that were feeding on bass fry as well as taking bass and bluegill. Fun on a 3 weight for shure! Nice strong hook ."

The Sneaky Pete - A Fly Fishing Warm-Water Classic,November 20, 2006
By MassachusettsTomfrom Eastern Mass.
"I fish the Sneaky Pete, preferably chartreuse, for several reasons. First, it catches fish; springtime smallmouth in the big clear lakes of New England, largemouth and panfish all through the summer. Probably it catches fish because of it's quiet commotion and movement, not like the big pops from the traditional bass popper, and also because of the rubber band legs. It moves more quietly across the top of the water because of it's convex, rather than concave head, and sometimes the fish want something that's no so noisy. The convex head, which classifies the Sneaky Pete as a slider, also means it casts a lot more easily, a concave bass popper can be a struggle to cast because of wind resistance, while the Sneaky Pete does fine on a 6 or 7 weight rod. I fish only the size 2, the largest size, because the sunfish, small bass and various other panfish love it as well, the larger size means I'm less likely to hook one of them. Nevertheless, if fishing for bass is slow, then the Sneaky Pete is still a pleaser because the small fish keep on banging it."

Sneaky Pete - A Dynamite Fly,November 20, 2006
By BugMasterfrom Northern Kentucky
"The best pan fish fly I've ever used. I've tried "look-alikes" but they don't compare to the Gaines Sneaky Pete. I've had small bluegills swallow them whole. I just bought another supply in both chartreuse and black."
