Nice product, October 12, 2009
By BriB from Ashburn, VA

"I'm a big, strong guy and have been sliding my Old Town Guide (16') on the roof of my Explorer for years....and have the scrathes to prove it! I have use the loader for about 3 weeks now and really like it. I like to load and go quick, so I was hesitant to buy something else I would have to install and load everytime I wanted to go out, but putting it on and the canoe takes about the same time as just sliding it up on the roof. I did have it slip off the rack while I was unloading it one time because the little straps were too loose (my fault). I also like that it brings my canoe further back on my roof so long trips might be a little secure feeling. Only draw back is I have to remove the whole loader to open my hatch or glass to get in the back of my Expedition (but since I'm usually alone, I put the fishing junk in the front seat)."

Best Canoe Accessory I ever purchased, September 5, 2009
By JohnSInNC from Wake Forest, NC

"I have a 17' Grumman (heavy) that was always a pain for my wife and I to take off the SUV. This thing is a life saver, back saver, paint saver and marriage saver.

I can get the canoe on and off the car by myself with very little effort.

Great product!, August 11, 2009

Canoe Loader and Rack, August 10, 2009
By ligonierbill

"Once installed, I can easily load my canoe solo. I did have to put a drill to one of the holes that was misaligned, but that took 2 min. Be sure to secure the boat side-to-side, as the hitch mount will "rock" underway. Overall, works great!"

Canoe loader and rack, August 3, 2009
By Hotpressed from Clearwater, FL

"Easy to assemble with clear instructions. Once installed, however, the upper tube rattles around over lower tube. A way to dampen this so that the unit doesn't make noise would be an improvement. If you are loading a kayak as I am the rear strap may slip over the bow/stern and you will have to tie the D-rings on the loader to the eye loops on your gunwales instead."

OK, but not great, July 23, 2009

"I was happy with the construction of the rack, but it needs more height adjustment for my application. F350 with a camper shell."

Big help!, July 14, 2009
By cartopper from New Mexico

"Use it on a Cadillac Deville because it gets good mileage.
Makes one person loading easy lifting one end at a time.
Had to stabilize a wobble caused by so many pieces of steel by running a strap from rear outside corners of the car up thru the loader. Keeps it from wiggling around in the receiver, etc. Added a cable lock thru the hitch pin on the receiver to keep honest people honest.
A good rig, may even figure how to hang some bikes on it, too.

canoe loader, July 14, 2009
By wjnfish from Vermont

"I thought the loader went together easily and I mounted the base directly to a reciever and can easily switch from my trailer ball receiver to the canoe loader receiver. I hunt and fish alone many times and this enables me to handle my canoe with ease. Good product !!!!"

Great job as a loader, okay as a rack., June 16, 2009
By DaveFromMentorOH from Mentor, OH

"The Canoe Loader and Rack works great as a canoe loader for one person. It's a real back saver, and allows the canoe to be placed on top of the vehicle with minimal risk of damage to the vehicle's paint (especially if you don't have a roof rack).
As a rack to support the canoe during transport it's good, however; it requires four ratchet tie-downs (not included) to truly secure the canoe in my pick-up truck. Two ratchet tie-downs at the mid-section (1 over the middle, & 1 criss-cross over the middle) and two at the end near the Canoe Loader and Rack in the same fashion really did a good job. I had it on the freeway up to 70 MPH without any trouble.
It is a great value considering that it includes a two tethering straps and a zip-up carrying case for easy transport and storage when not in use. I searched the web and found this Canoe Loader and Rack to offer the most bang-for-the-buck. It appears that they made some design improvements to address some of the looseness issues mentioned in earlier reviews. The rubber pads on the horizontal bar are secured with two-sided foam tape, which didn't hold up to well so I put zip-ties around them to secure them better.

Great idea but needs refinement, January 8, 2009
By roivy from Bremerton, WA

"Had I saw one of these in action before purchasing, I probably would not have bought it. I believe the unit would work better with lower vehicles. On my suburban, the tubes had to be extended wuite a bit and it became wobbly. If you have a fine wood canoe as I do, you may need to come up with a plan to protect the end you must place on the ground if loading entirely alone. The bungee to hold the upper end in place while the other end is on the ground isn't the best holder and the possibility of your boat slipping out is there. Ratchet straps should be included over the friction brake type that comes with it. You may as well get a spare "sticker" to slide into your receiver hitch because once the base is mounted it isn't good for anything else. The adapter is shown to be mounted off center and I think that could be better. When the boat was on and downward tension applied, the vertical support pulled towards the back of my vehicle. The locking pins are kind of cheesy and I would replace with better quality or bolts. Also retrofit support pads with soft pipe insulation. I will use it again but will be refining it somewhat."

Requires modification, January 5, 2009
By OkieLarry

"The upper hole in the outer adjustment pole (part no. 31-0904) does not line up with the hole in the cross bar base (part no. 31-0908) to allow insertion of the safety pin (part no. 31-0912). The weld on the cross bar base prevents full insertion. It is necessary to saw or grind off a short piece from the top of the outer pole to get the two holes to align."

Very Good Product, December 30, 2008
By DSR2 from Vancouver WA

"Works as advertised--makes loading and off-loading my Old Town Guide 147 by myself pretty easy. I use it on my 2005 Ford Expedition. It adjusts to the height just fine. The bungee cord to hold it in place doesn't work too well though--I'll either use a shorter one (for tighter hold) or a strap. Still, this is really a minor thing--overall it does just what I needed it to do--let me load and unload by myself."

Canoe loader & rack, November 17, 2008
By H417 from Deer Isle,ME

"The concept is very good. However the fit of parts is very sloppy and causes the shaft to wobble so that the operation is far from smooth. This makes it much more difficult to use than necessary. When you are on the other end of a 17' canoe you feel like it could get away from you quickly, even with the bungy cord in place. I would recommend with the above warning."

Excellent, November 13, 2008
By 30pointbuck from Northern WI

"I have just used my canoe loader for the first time and I am very impressed. My canoe is a 17 ft aluminum that I load on a Suburban for duck hunting. I typically hunt solo and without the rack there is no way I could load this beast on my own. It is very easy for me to load and unload the canoe on my own with no assistance. Additional tie downs are needed but overall the system is very secure and well designed. There seemes to be a little play in the hardware but nothing that would cause any great concern. The concept is spot on for anyone who needs to load or unload a canoe solo.
Thanks Cabelas for another product well thought out.

Cabela's canoe loader and rack, October 14, 2008
By Cattail from Greenville OH

"I found the loader to be very helpful taking the canoe on and off truck. However, I find it to be very loose/wobbly. I understand it needs to be somewhat flexible but it is too wobbly . After canoe is mounted on truck it does a good job of holding canoe in place. Even with its faults it is a good piece of equipment."

Scanoe Loader, September 23, 2008
By TonyMI from Holbrook, MA

"I have now used the canoe carrier for a 15' Coleman Scanoe and it works great. Being 63 and my wife, 61, we had a tough time getting our Scanoe on top of our Jeep Liberty Renagade's roof racks. Now I can do it myself. Just be careful getting the back end (the heaviest part) on the the T bar. The front of the Scanoe being pointed like a canoe becomes a little wobbely trying to lift the heavy end. Once you get it on the T bar, the rest is a breeze. Taking it off is even easier. To make the portage to water even easier, get the device that you can put your craft on wheels and carrying all your gear inside craft making the whole portage to water a lot less strenuous. With both devices, you can better enjoy your excursion. Thanks Carbela for having these devices available! :)"

Canoe Loader & Rack, September 22, 2008
By Hemingway from Indiana

"Seems to work quite well, although I was skeptical at first because the unit seemed loose. I have a 15 ft. Old Town Predator canoe that weighs 110 lbs. A friend and I loaded it on top of a Jeep Grand Cherokee using the factory rack and cross rails along with universal foam canoe blocks. It worked as stated and we had no trouble getting the canoe on top of the vehicle. We used ratchet straps instead of the straps that came with the canoe loader to secure it to the loader rack and vehicle rack. I haven't tried to load the canoe myself yet, so I am not sure how difficult it might be due to this canoe's size and weight."

Great Idea, poor execution, August 24, 2008
By WRF55 from Seattle

"I use this to lift my 14 ft. canoe on top of my Tundra with cap. The concept is great, and it makes it possible for 1 person to lift a canoe high enough to secure it on the top of a tall vehicle. Unfortunately, it is quite loose at all the joints, which makes the process unstable. I fixed the connections by adding electrical tape between all the metal sleeves, and using bolts instead of the spring clips. I also bolted the base directly onto a spare ball mount, avoiding the extra bracket. This is now not easy to break down for storage or transport, but I will take the trade-off.
I use a ratcheting strap to hold the canoe on instead of the bungee that comes with it. I also strap the loader to the corners of the rear bumper for security. I use a canoe rack cross bar(Thule) for the front with the ratchet strap, and the whole rig is very stable. The gunwale pads fell off before I even used it, foam pipe insulation and zip ties fixed this easily.
I bought this because it was the only rack I found that provided a solution for me to be able to load a canoe by myself. With some modifications I was able to make it work out for me, but I cannot recommend it unless you are willing to customize it for your needs.
