Van Staal pliers are amazing, October 23, 2009
By SpinningTop from Auckland, New Zealand

"I've purchased 3 different brands of supposedly corrosion resistant saltwater pliers only to be disappointed with their performance. By comparison, I've had a pair of the 5" Van Staal pliers for 2 years now and they are truly stunning. The blades cut Fireline fused braid (down to 4 lb) cleanly first go and deal with fluorocarbon and nylon easily. No sign of corrosion. The tips are not incumbered with split ring pliers which makes them a joy to use, especially the fiddly jobs where needle points are essential. The pouch and lanyard are well made and beutifully crafted. Wish that I had gone straight to Van Staal and stayed away from the poorly engineered products over marketed by Rapala and Berkley."

Great Pliers, November 18, 2008
By NYSurfcaster from LI, NY

"A number of friends have these so they came highly recommended. If you can get past the price they are an excellent plier. The last pair you will buy. Mine are constantly dunked in saltwater but a quick rinse and some WD40 and they are good to go. Both the sheath and the lanyard are very well made."

expensive but worth it., September 18, 2008
By nyer from NY, NY

"I've had the 6" pliers for about 5 years and they have been great. They are very sturdy and handle and cut line/wire, etc. well. I used to rust through pliers like crazy because I wade in the saltwater a lot, but these titanium pliers are completely rust proof. Even the leather sheath seems to survive the salt well. The only downside is the cost, which is even greater now that it was 5 years ago. If you're cheap like me, have your family get it for you for Christmas or B-day."

Outstanding quality, August 11, 2008
By CaptainRonN

"Expensive? Yes. Worth the money? Yes.
Outstanding build. This is an investment in a quality tool. How many rusted pairs of cheap pliers have you thrown away already? Buy these once and they'll last a lifetime. Very light weight. Even the holster and lanyard are high quality. You know you want 'em, treat yourself, you'll be happy that you did.

best pliers, June 5, 2008
By jjfrize from Hillside New Jersey

"Although these pliers are very expensive, they are without question the top of the line. I have tried all the other top of the line products and have been disappointed. The accurate pirahna and the fishpond barracuda pliers can't even compare. They are not for everyone because of the price, but if you are a serious fisherman you will not be disappointed. They cut any type of mono and cut all spectra products."

Van Staal Pliers, July 1, 2007
By SABj

"I have gone through several pairs of "supposedly" salt water, corrosion resistant pliers with great disappointment. The better (~$150) aluminum pliers (Ross, Fishpond, Abel) all have stainless jaws that will rust and must be replaced. The Van Stalls are solid titanium and deliver a top quality product with no need to replace rusted jaws. The cutters are superb -- I cut stainless steel and titanium wire, Fireline and mono with no trouble. They are worth every cent of their admittedly high price. If you can spring for the price, go for it."

Van Staal Pliers, November 28, 2006
By cec0 from Montana

"Used these for the past fly fishing season. They are a great pair of pliers. They are very strong yet very light weight. I fish with a pack rather than a vest and carried them on the belt. Could not tell they were there. They cut very fine tippet down to 7 and 8X. The retractor is very functional. The only draw back is that they are rather pricey."
