Image of Cabelas Hydro-Troll™ Trolling Plate

Optimize the performance of your motor when running at full tilt as well as when slowly trolling along a breakline with one easy-to-install unit. The hydrofoil eliminates bow rise, back spray and performance draining rooster tails and directs every ounce of power to where it is most useful. The stabilizing fin also reduces porpoising and enhances handling for more efficient turning and gas usage. When you arrive at your trolling location, put the boat in neutral, pull the cord and the trolling plate locks down with the use of heavy-duty springs. The plate redirects the thrust the propeller exerts, cutting your idle speed down for precise control of your crawler harness or crankbait without the need for a separate kicker motor. When you're ready to leave, just pull the cord again while at trolling speed and the force of the propeller swings the plate back up and locks it in the running position. And to protect your lower unit in case you forget to pull the trolling plate up, the locking mechanism is outfitted with a shear pin that breaks away and lets the force of the motor push the plate up for running. The Hydro Troll also comes with an extra shear pin that can be replaced when you're on the water, so one mishap doesn't have to ruin your entire fishing day. The entire assembly attaches to your engine's cavitation plate in minutes with minimal tools. It works on both outboard and I/O motors from 25hp to 150hp. Corrosion-resistant, stainless steel mounting hardware included.
Colors: Black.

Good concept-complete junk, August 4, 2009
By Anonymous from Casper, Wy.

"Gosh darn-it, I should have followed the advice of the majority of reviews before purchasing. I purchased the first one, mounted it and it worked well. It was a little stiff to release, but worked as advertised. The very next day, I gave the boat just a little throttle to get away from some rocks, and thought the shear pin sheared. WRONG! The holes just wallowed out. Shear pin did not shear. Sent back and got a new one. This one didn't even make it to the lake. Wont lock up or down even with new pins installed. Cabelas sent me an e-mail that it is now discontinued. Wish I would have known that BEFORE I drilled holes in my lower unit."

Dissapointed, July 27, 2009
By fshngmore from Castleton, New York

"Used this plate/stabilizer for a week in Canada. Excellent concept, terrible engineering. The metal edges of the holes in the plate body started to chip away immediately causing the plate to parcially rise while trolling and then when underway would not lock the plate in the up position. The brass pins have slots worn into them after trolling for a while and wouldn't stay tight. The pins did not break but I had to put in new ones to keep my trolling speed down for walleyes. Eventually the plate would not lock up at all while on the water, but when I got home in my yard it did. Very frustrating."

hydro troll, July 4, 2009
By dbario from France

"After ten months in the sea I notice a very strong corrosion on the locking system and witch causes of the indistinctness in the maintains it of the plate. This immersed piece should be stainless steel this in steel. It is a piece molded thus an impossible replacement, while the control lever is replaceable and in stainless steel. I am very disappointed by the quality of manufacturing.
I could not recommend such a system to fisherman.

Poor boat handleing., June 16, 2009
By drm26 from WA. State

"Although advertised to be effective on a 30+ Hp boat motor, This product performed very poorly on my 16 foot boat with 35 Hp motor. Serious loss of stability in rough water. I returned it to Cabela's. Return was handled very efficiently."

qualified recommendation, June 15, 2009
By SHaas from Green Bay WI

"When I bought my boat used three years ago it had the Hydro-Troll plate on it. It had a crack in the main section and during continued use, it developed a crack in the hinge of the "beaver tail". I replaced it with the identical model recently and find that this unit doesn't latch in the upper position consistently. It works well enough for trolling but is not without warts. I break shear pins even when using it correctly. It's no fun changing pins on the water. I guess I have mixed feeling about the quality of this product."

Stay away from this, June 8, 2009
By Lundfish

"I'm using a 150 Optimax that idles at about 550 Rpms.

I mounted it on my boat and didn't use it for about a month. After the first use it would not come back up and lock into place. I did not gun it while it was down and I didn't go over 1000 rpms.

It cracked after the first use. I called Cabelas and they sent me a new one. After the first use, it won't lock back up but it didn't crack like the other one.

They are going to give me my money back but what do I do now with the holes in my boat? There are other trolling plates (that hopefully work better) but they have different mounting holes.

I should've just bought a kicker. This product should be discontinued in my opinion.

Do not buy!!, May 14, 2009
By JR1111 from Norcal

"Do not buy this trolling plate. The plastic cannot handle the pressure from the motor. Mine broke in half and came off
at 40mph. They shouldn't even be selling these things anymore.

"I have been very saitsfied with this product. I am on my third one. when used properly, they function as advertized.

When you back into or over things they crack or break. Maybe you could find a way to strengthen them a bit for dopes like me!

Breaks Easily, March 31, 2009
By shimernick from Lexington, KY

"I bought this to slow down my boat while trolling as well as better plaining of my boat.

First day out, the pin broke and the cord doesn't work as it should as well.

In my opinion Cabelas should sell this at a cheaper price as it is cheap workmanship or offer to supply the customer with several free pins.

If it was better quality it would most likely work as described.

Hydro-Troll Plate, December 28, 2008
By tp082060 from Mocksville, NC

"I put the Hydro-Troll Plate on my 150 hp Johnson so that I could slow down the idle speed from about 3 mph to 1.5 mph and it worked fine the 1 or 2 times I used it. I left it on the motor to assist in planing off the boat as advertised in the ad, but it developed a crack and eventually ripped entirely off. I don't believe this product is constructed heavy enough to perform as advertised."

Not Happy, December 27, 2008
By Vttroller from VT

"I have had the plate on my 25 hp johnson for 3 years now. First, I knew I was in for trouble when I was done trolling and it would not click back into the upright position. had to use fishpole to get it back up. Then the unit began sliding upward instead staying completely down, and then I really had trouble getting it back into the upright position. Finally it cracked one day, and it had to be superglued. Finally this year the whole thing snapped off, so now I can get something different. And the pins never worked as promised either. I will say the hydo foil helped and boat rode smoother, but slower to."

Broke first time out and them came apart and lost, August 14, 2008
By mkoates55 from California

"The first time I used my Hydro troll, the plastic flap cracked in the middle but at least it still worked. Now the bolts have worked their way loose and the entire flap along with the springs and bolts that it pivots on are sitting at the bottom of the lake. My advice... Do not buy plastic trolling plates. ONLY ALUMINUM!!!"

Trolling Plate, July 31, 2008
By rdailey from Longmont, Colorado

"Unfortunately I've had all the same problems. I did try to mount this on a Volvo Penta outdrive which you are not supposed to do but there isn't anything on the market I can find.
I've been through two of these units now. If they are not mounted absolutely flat they do split down the middle. I used some metal straps across the top which did seem to help with that problem. Regardless of that you can expect to replace the sheer pin after each trip. The only way to get the unit to engage and disengage is by hand.
I did make over sized spacers to go under the second unit to true it up and that worked okay. The volvo outdrive slopes down and outward sharply in the rear. But even getting a good mount sheer pins still get chewed up every trip out.
Nice idea but not sturdy material and the pins have nothing to do with how its mounted.

It works, but not as advertised, July 19, 2008
By islandsnow from Esparto CA

"If you read the other reviews of this product you can see the problems in detail. I have had similar issues. One year and the whole module is cracked in half where it bolts to the motor. The plate NEVER locks in the up position automatically and you go through shear pins like crazy. I have come to the point where I lift the motor hang over the back of the boat and manually get it to lock in the upright position. I concur with one reviewer who said he wished he knew they where junk before drilling holes in his motor.

I don't know if somewhere, someone has built a better mouse trap, because the plate works for slow trolling, it just doesn't work easy.

HydtoTroll, July 7, 2008
By Bunkie77 from Yucca Valley, California

"The sharp corners, on the holes for the lock pin, gaul the pin/hole, on first usage. Also, I believe the hole/pin fit is way to tight.
You have a rounded end on the pin, but it goes into a very sharp edged hole. If this thing, was made out of tool steel, these clearances might work, and I realize, that a fairly good fit is required, to establish/hold pin shear load, which to me, makes this design, unsatisfactory.
Putting it down, the first time is easy. Simply go forward, pull the release, and then shut down, and let it lock. Raising it is also easy, but to get it to lock, in raised position, almost impossible, because its already gauled
I believe this thing in not correctly machined.
You can't get the lock clip in, it was in, jambed in upon reciept, because I believe it was drilled wrong.
I will get up to the lake, and remove it, this week, but looking for a better replacement.

Hydro Troll, July 3, 2008
By CmdrTom from Eastern Lake Erie, New York

"1st star for the concept of design
2nd star for quick delivery
That's about it the Hydrol Troll is not practicle for almost any motor. It does not take the pressure from the prop. The plastic deforms, making it difficult to change positions. The plastic gets fatigue cracks and breaks. I do not know how the manufacturer can eliminate this problem. I have had too many hydro trolls to count... and they all break... some sooner than others. I was ready to switch to a metal plate but I heard form members of my club they bend and aren't all that much better. So, after ten years I put an 80 lb thrust electric trolling motor on my 20 foot deep vee boat and it works great I can troll over six hours constantly at speeds up to 3 mph .... most trolling is at 1.3 to 2 for walleye on Lake Erie, very stealthy. My motor has the auto pilot feature... it is great.. I just wish I got the 110 lb thrust model with three batteries it would have given me a couple more hours on the batteries before I switched back to the hydro troll... I have other friends doing the same... advantages quiet... no gas ... and it works great!
