Dancing with the 0wt!,August 25, 2008
By SOCBOBfrom South Orange County, CA
"Ok, I am not anywherez near an authority on UL's but I will say this, I have 12 rods from 6wt down to my new 0wt! Three 2wt's one 1wt and the 0wt. I have a few 3 and 4wts and they all cast great! But on a recent trip, I took my new Sage TXL 0wt out for a dance, and dance it did! I have come to realize that I really enjoy the fight of the fish, mostly in the 5 - 10" range, and when you start fishing with the UL's it is really hard to go back to a 4wt, at least on small creeks anyway. Especially when you hook into a 14 + incher! Man you wanna talk about some serious action! I have caught plenty this size on tiny creeks with a 4wt, I now find that the heavier rod (yes, 3 & 4's I now consider heavy) isolate a lot of the feel, comparatively speaking, and it's just a simple keep tension on the line and reel or strip it in. But my first 14 on this 0wt was a tremendously different experience, every movement and wiggle of the fish was transmitted up the fine line and into the almost doubled over rod and into my hands and arms! You almost feel like you are connected directly to the fish! Now you really have to work to bring the fish to the net, seemingly simple right, wrong! I lost a few big ones in the final second, only to watch that gaping mouth sink slowly off the frame of my net and back into the cool abyss sans the hook! I could not believe how truly different the experience is! Now I know why certain people fish with UL's exclusively! If you know someone with an ultralight who will let you try it out, you really gotta go for it! So think about the fun factor, if you are fortunate enough to acquire a TXL, go for it. Hope I did not rant too much, and I hope this helps with your choice, JMHO SOCBOB/flybob"

Small Stream Power,February 11, 2007
By claassenfrom Nebraska, USA
"The TXL is a nice little rod, a newer version of the SLT small stream 3 piece rods. Extremely light weight for for its size, especially since it use an uplocking reel seat with insert, instead of a cork-sliding band system. The color is beautiful, with an olive-gold hue, clear-olive wraps and and a nice piece of Vera wood, under a nickel silver uplocking reel seat. My favorite reel to balance such a tiny rod (mine is a 2 weight) is the Sage 3100 weighing in at a mere 2.75 ounces. I do advise using the matching Sage Quiet Taper Double taper Line in the lower weights, as regular weight lines will overload these rods heavily. Not a combo for steelhead, it does make a nice small stream brookie or brown seem like one. All in all a very good rod, though slightly faster than it would have to be in my opinion. You will enjoy it!"

Sage 370-3 TXL,January 20, 2007
By Zugbugzfrom Avondale, AZ
"The Sage TXL is hands down, the finest small stream fly rod I have ever owned or cast. I own the 370-3 (7', 3-piece, 3-weight). To cast it is to want one! It's absolutely perfect in Arizona's small brushy streams. It's so light, it will seem as if you have nothing in your hand, yet it has enough backbone to bring in a 4-5 lb brown (yes, we do have those here). Many tiny fly rods are somewhat hard to load or are excessively soft in flex - not this one. I do recommend using either the Sage Quiet Double Taper line or Scientific Anglers XPS double taper line to get the most of it. By the way, they aren't paying me to say that! The TXL is simply the best!"

small fish feel like a trophy,October 19, 2006
By Magoofrom Oak Forest, IL
"I do many types of fishing and I go to extremes. I like to go musky fishing, and I like to fish panfish and bass. I enjoy light line fishing and my Sage TXL is my favorite hands down. I use tiny spinning rods and such but my 00 wt Txl is great at casting small flys in the creeks and small rivers by my house. If you are looking at casting long distance stay away from the 00. The 00 is made for smaller waters, it has a soft tip and when the 00 line hits the water there is hardly a ripple. I've caught nice sized smallies and largemouth on it, although it takes a little longer to play them the rod does a good job of keeping pressure and has backbone when you need it. I highly recommend this rod for those who like panfishing, and trout fishing."
