"The LST/RLS combo is a great rod and reel combo for a great price. I absolutely love the action of this rod. It has amazing sensitivity yet a firm backbone. I bought a 9' 4-weight and I've caught all sizes of trout, from ~3" wild yearlings to 20" whoppers. The color is beautiful. It's hard to tell from the web page, but the blanks are a gorgeous olive with brownish ferrules. The only thing I thought I wouldn't like were the single-foot guides, as I am used to double-foot snake guides, but I haven't had any problems.
The RLS reel is outstanding. I was originally going to get the SLA reel, but after reading some of the reviews that talked about the drag going out, I decided to go with the RLS instead, and I've been more than pleasantly surprised. The drag is smooth and easily adjustable. The reel itself is light and sturdy. Also, I have to say, Cabela's on-line customer service is great! After reading the SLA reel reviews, I chatted with a customer support specialist via their on-line chat system regarding the reportedly bad drag issue. They were very pleasant, helpful, truthful, and didn't try to sell me on any specific product. Props to Cabela's customer support!

"Cannot comment on the rod, will not be used until I go down to the East Coast (Canada) for salmon fishing. The problem is with the RLS reel (7/8 wt. with 150 yd., 20 lb. backing) as stated in the specs. for the reel. Everthing arrived, rod,reel, 8 wt. line and 30 lb. backing??? Tried it with 150 yd. backing and of course, all the fly line would not fit, big surprise.. Called Cabelas, and they sent out some 20 lb. backing. Great, removed the 30 lb. and firmly wound on the 20 lb. with the 8wt., WF. The line completely fills the spool, with no extra room whatsoever. this can cause excessive wear on the line. I started fishing Atlantic Salmon back in the early 1960's so hopefully have some idea of what I am talking about. Maybe Cabelas will offer some Jel spun (Prestige Plus). As advertised, this RLS reel spec. is incorrect!"

"I purchased this combo because I wanted a high performance setup but didn't want to spend several hundred dollars. I purchased the 5wt 4 pc rod and was not disappointed. I used it for the first time on a Colorado fishing trip. I was very impressed with the balance, feel, and performance. The reel is very smooth and high quality - typical of all Cabelas brand products I have used. I fished in very windy conditions at times and the rod has the power to make long casts into the wind. I also fished in some tight, brushy situations and was able to make very good roll casts with this set up. The rod is very sensitive and I was able to feel most strikes and didn't use a strike indicator. I like the 4 piece rod because it will fit into a pack when cased. I did some backcountry fishing and this was very handy."
