High winds. Big water. Big fish. Saltwater fly-fishing demands a specialized series of rods to meet these inherent
challenges. The XST (Extreme Saltwater Taper) is that series. Making quick casts to moving fish from more than 70-feet
away is just one of the scenarios in which our XST series of rods excel. The Generation III high-modulus graphite and
super-fast actions makes it easy to form tight loops that slice through the strongest winds and the powerful butt
sections subdue the largest fish in a short amount of time. All XST rod components match pleasing aesthetics with
high-end performance: high-grade cork handle, black aluminum reel seat, chrome double-foot snake guides and an
SIC stripper guide. 25-year warranty. Includes rod tube.

Powerful rod,September 29, 2008
By Redcaddisfrom Patagonia Argentina
"I bought this rod -7wt- for big rivers, big trout, streamers and sinking lines. I wasn't wrong, the rod is very good with a lot of power, stiff but sensitive, and just a little heavy. I like the deep blue color, not very usual in the market of fly rods. Is also well finished and the price is really low for the quality. Highly recommended for the hard job with strong fish."

Broken ferrule,May 16, 2008
By jaybpfrom Bridgeport, CT
"The rod was nice until the middle ferrule on my 4 piece 9 weight cracked while casting. I only had the rod for about 7 months so this is obviously very unacceptable. I will be returning it for a refund and purchased a St. Croix Avid 9 weight. The XST was also a beast of a rod (probably should have put 10 weight line on it), probably more than I needed as I use it mostly for striped bass (nothing over 10 lbs so far) and bluefish in the LI Sound. The St. Croix is a lighter rod and seems more like a 9 weight."

xst Rod review,September 13, 2007
By gaj7from Montana
"I purchased my first xst rod this year, a 9 ft 8 wt, and it broke at the tip section on my first fish--a large Montana Missouri River brown trout. I returned it for another xst 9 ft 8 wt for a trip to Alaska. That rod also broke at the same exact place--the tip section-- on my first fish--a 10-12 lb salmon. I contacted Cabelas regarding a possible flaw. Cabelas treated me very well on each occasion and I will be purchasing another rod from Cabelas. However, I will not buy another xst rod."

Another broke rod,August 21, 2007
By mcarthurfrom 250 miles from the Miracle Mile
"My rod also broke above the top ferrule. I was in Belize with about a two pound bonefish on, and snap, it just broke. The angle wasn't extreme, it just snapped. Cabelas did offer to replace it with another one, but the other reviews mention a break in the same spot. Why would I want another one? I'll go with a TFO or a Sage. They don't break. I expected more from a Cabela's product and was disappointed with both the XST rod and the SR reel that had a failed drag after about 8 bonefish. Never again, I learned a good lesson."

Love this Rod,July 30, 2007
By TMorefrom Seattle, WA
"I see I'm not the only one who really liked this rod. However, I also see I'm not the only one to have one break. I have had the rod just over a year - played a few big fish with it and SNAP the tip broke (just above the top farrel) The reason I'm still giving this a 5 star rating is the warranty. I've been told my replacement rod is on the way. Like everyone else - I like the fast action and the feel. I'm throwing fairly big flies with this rod and it puts them out there a long way."

907-4 XST,June 6, 2007
By Flyfishr55from Boulder, CO
"I know it is a saltwater rod, but I purchased the Cabela's 907-4 XST for throwing large streamers to aggressive freshwater trout. We fish a Wyoming river immediately after peak snowmelt flow from fast-drifting rafts, and that requires pinpoint accuracy and the ability to overcome constant upstream winds. Casting distance is usually 35-45 feet, but can be up to 50 feet at times.
I just returned from 6-days on the river with the new 907-4 XST. The rod was excellent in all respects! It loads my Class 6 sinking line quickly and throws the big streamers effortlessly, and the stiff butt section makes it easy to impart lifelike movement to the fly. It vastly outperformed my other "famous-brand" 7wt, and for 1/3 the cost! To say it is a great value is a real understatement! If you are a streamer-chucking fool like me, do yourself a favor and get an XST!"

Great product,May 15, 2007
By Saltwaterflyfishermanfrom Grand Rapids, MI and Stuart, FL
"I have been fishing the 8 wt xst for a couple of years now, both in saltwater (snook, baby tarpon, spanish mackerel, jack cravelle, bonefish, etc) and freshwater (bass, all 5 species of salmon), and it has become my favorite bigwater rod. Originally purchased as a backup, it retired a sage, which had replaced a redington, which had replaced an older orvis. I have it coupled with the SR reel, and what a great outfit for a touch over 300. The fit and finish is great for a rod in this price range. This rod handles the wind and salt extremely well, and the 8 weight was plenty for a 40 lb kingfish, and kicked the h out of an 11 lb bonefish. There is not one bad thing I can say about it."

XST Rods,April 29, 2007
By Fishingpartnerfrom Stockton,CA
"The two XST Rods 10wt & 9wt performed excellent for me. They handle all fish great and there casting performance equal the higher priced rods I own. The best thing was there lifting power in the butt section to help lift fish out of the deeper water. The 10wt has the lifting power of my 12wt rod. I would recommend these rods at any time for Saltwater and freshwater fishing."

XST just as good as Xi2,February 26, 2007
By BenfromOklahomafrom Tulsa, OK....that's in Oklahoma
"You heard right. When I got my 8 weight XST I had my suspicions that it might be a clone of a Sage Xi2 (or even from the same taper). They were confirmed from the first rocket-launching cast into a 20 mph Oklahoma wind from the XST. It is everything the Sage is at under 1/3 the cost. What an awesome saltwater stick. Not much else to be said. Get the XST. Heck, get three instead of one Sage."

High Performance, Excellent Price,November 27, 2006
By Gerharfrom Atlantic Beach, NC
"I purchased the XST 10 weight, 9 foot rod for inshore saltwater use. Upon initial inspection, the rod looked great. The XST rod is very resistant to corrosion from the harsher environments of saltwater with the anodized reel seat and hardware. It's also very attractive, which is uncommon for rods in this price range. Comes with a high quality rod sock and tube. I was wary at first about the four-piece construction, as I usually choose only two piece rods, but I speculated that with a rod this stiff it would not be detrimental, and it wasn't. Also makes it much easier to take on a plane. As for the function of the rod, I have been fishing for redfish from a kayak in the Bogue Sound, and this equipment has never failed me. As advertised, the casting is very accurate in strong winds, and the distance achievable is remarkable compared to the lighter freshwater rods I have, even from a sitting position in a kayak. I even took the rod on an offshore fishing trip and casted it to rising Mahi-Mahi on a feeding frenzy. I managed to pull in two fish much larger than recommended with a rod of this weight, and ended up breaking the rod tip on the third fish (it ran under the boat and the rod was pressed against the side). Cabela's replaced the rod no questions asked, you can't beat their warranty. I haven't tried any of the more expensive rods for saltwater, but I suspect, as i've found with their freshwater fly equipment, that there is no reason to."

XST Fly Rod,November 20, 2006
By JJJSfrom New Jersey
"This Fly Rod had a nice fast action that was capable of throwing a pretty good distance into the wind. I like the for piece rod for traveling to the Jersey shore. The first rod I bought broke the first day out while I was fighting a fish ( only a 1 1/2 pound blue). It was pretty disappointing since I had to leave and there were allot of fish around. But Cabelas was great and stood behind the product and sent me a new one which has been fine."
