Available in a rubber-handle Vanguard version with Cordura® nylon sheath. Developed by Crucible Steel, S30V is made up of metallic powders fused together under intense pressure and heat. It is tempered under extremely high temperatures then cooled in a cryogenic freezer. The resulting metal delivers a fine combination of edge retention (45% greater than 420HC), flexibility and hardness (59-61 Rockwell) while remaining easy to sharpen with conventional stones. This steel also has a high chromium content for oxidation resistance. For even greater corrosion resistance, each knife is treated with a titanium aluminum nitride coating. Our field testing and independent Cutlery Allied Trade Research Association tests prove these knives outperform those crafted with other blade metals. It also has a leather sheath. Made in USA. "I bought this knife expecting a high quality blade with good edge retention, and it delivered wonderfully. However, I do abuse my knifes in the wilds of Southeast Alaska which proved a bit much for it.
I've had this knife for about 4 months and only sharpened it once. It's edge is still razor sharp. The only problem I had was a bit of chipping on the blade. This was in part due to my heavy use.
Overall though I love this blade and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a good looking and razor sharp knife."

"I'm 8 weeks into my trip on the AT and this knife is indispensable, indestructible and is used everyday for some purpose. The edge stays sharp, I've cut wood, dug for water, cleared a tent site, fended off attacking bears (just kidding) and sleep like a baby just knowing it's with me. I sent home my Leatherman and pocket knife because this knife does it all. I have another 4 months on the AT as I'm thru hiking and I'm sure that this is the one item I won't replace and will work as well at the end as the beginning."

"I gave this knife 2 stars on looks alone. After receiving the knife the look and feel of it were just awesome but after feeling the blade I had my doubts. The actual blade of my knife had a rough feel to it not smooth like it should have been. It was not hair shaving sharp out of the box like alot of other reviews claimed. I was proven right on my observations this weekend when I had the chance to test the knife on 3 deer and a hog. Half way through skinning the first deer I had to hand the knife off to a buddy to sharpen it and borrow someone elses knife to finish up. After a quick sharpening I started on the second deer with knife in hand again. It did a much better job on the second deer but it had started to loose its edge again. By the time we got to the last deer the knife was dull again. This knife looks great but so far it has not produced where I actually need it."

"I bought the Cabela’s Alaskan Guide Series Vanguard knife for my wife after her first white-tailed deer hunt. She had the opportunity to put it to use this season. It did a superb job removing the hide from three deer alone, and when it came time to do the butchering, it does the job with ease. I ordered the knife site unseen. When it arrived it was slightly bigger and slightly heavier than I had thought, making it a bit more difficult for smaller work. However, when it comes time for moose, bear, and other big game, we are confident that it will be the perfect tool. After a week worth of use the blade was far from phased. Everyone in the camp wanted to get their hands on this knife, and asked where it came from. My wife just handed it to them and let them read the emblem on the blade: “Cabelas’s Alaskan Guide.” Enough said. Not only is this knife an outstanding tool, but it’s as beautiful as its owner. I suggest, when in camp, guard your Vanguard, or you may just find it packed in someone else’s gear bag. Happy hunting to all."

"This knife quickly became my favorite - ruber grips for no slip handling, nice hilt to keep the fingers safe, good broad surface on the back of the blade so you can drive it through the tough parts with your other hand, and just sharp as you could want it to be.

"I bought this knife between hunting seasons and im finding myself handling it, all the time around the house cutting things around the house just so i can use it again every day. cleaned some trout after a nice fishing trip. verywell made, fits like a glove, well balanced, very sharp out of the box, execellent metal material. Only thing i would preferre: the molded type shelth with no snap. The snap that holds this knife in place kind of gets in the way because it over laps the whole knife handle. cant put a good knife down because of the shelth."
