Love, frustration.,November 10, 2009
By bloodlesshuntfrom Two Harbors MN
"This knife is a work of art, I am a photographer for metal fabricating companies, so I can see how every operation in the production of this knife went, and my knife is perfect. Add to that the s30V surgical steel with Tungsten Carbide coating, and I would feel fine cutting down small tress with this thing, It would sharpen right up. And did I mention how beautiful it is? The Cocobollo handle is far more beautiful than the photo shows - wish I had done THAT photo! I could just put it in a case with some nice lighting and be happy all the time.
I've had it for one day, and the checkered HANDLE has already cut into the sheath and if I wear this on my belt the sheath will be destroyed in a week. C'MON MAN, as the boys would say. Give this thing a formed leather sheath that fits the knife. Really frustrating. Or just sell it without a sheath and we could all save 10 bucks.
A beautiful work of knife making art, leather work on the cheap - and I'm SO glad I didn't order the little caping version as it would be way small even for my small hand, this knife will outlast me, and I'll be happy every day that it's with me."

Another GREAT Freeman!,September 30, 2009
By 412carvefrom St Louis
"I gave this as a present and learned from Gerber that etching was in order rather than engraving, the blade coating was not destroyed and it looks wonderful.
This one has a fixed blade and has a slightly smaller feel than my personal preference, Freeman S30V folder. This S30V blade takes and holds a wonderful edge. The only improvement would be to move the lock release so fingers stay out of harms way. A great blade, great looks, good secure feel and a wonderful gift for another hunter and knife collector!"

Nice Knife.,August 25, 2008
By CamoFloggedfrom Denver, CO
"Delivered very sharp from Gerber. Nice looking knife with the dark wood and black blade. The only thing I think I would change is making a larger handle. It seems to sit a little small in the hand for me.
Blade quality is excellent and the S30V steel does hold an edge nicely.
I have owned many Gerbers and they always seem to deliver quality."

Gerber Freeman/ S30V,March 12, 2008
By kamotzfrom Rising Sun,MD
"I like the kinfe, and especially that S30V steel, but the sheath mine came with was garbage. Threads began to unravel on the upper portion while inspecting it. Not from being cut with the blade, it just wasnt sewn properly. And the snap loop is a joke. It isnt riveted in the center to keep it from spinning in the slots so you must almost use two hands to unsheath the knife. One hand to keep the loop from spinning and the other to unsnap it. I'll keep the knife, but the sheath goes in the trash."

Very nice knife,January 7, 2008
By wnysportsmanfrom Buffalo, NY
"I bought this knife as an upgrade to my old folder and was very impressed with the craftsmanship of both the knife and leather sheath. The factory edge is better than average and way better than what I typically do when re sharpening. The best thing about the Freeman is the look, the blacked out blade and dark wood checkered handle really stand out. I hunt with a group of Adirondack old timers (you know gray hair, red plaid coats, rifles with no bluing left on the receiver from hard use) and when one actually asked to take a look at this knife during a coffee break between drives I knew I made a good choice."

Great Knife,November 23, 2007
By arrowit
"I have several S30V knives, This was the least expensive out of them all. The S30V steel in this knife is awesome at edge retention. Sharpen it once a year and cut up squirrels and then still sharp enough to field dress and process three deer on one sharpening. The size and shape of this blade makes it perfect for field dressing and caping and quartering deer. This knife has become the only knife in my backpack. Great product from Gerber !!!"

Gerber Freeman review,October 9, 2007
By weebfrom In
"The Knife seems to be of good quality, but I am a little disapointed in the sheath. The clasp holding the knife is very hard too snap and comes un-done quite frequently. I am hoping the leather will stretch with time, but to this point it remains the same."

favorite blade,November 24, 2006
By OregonElkSlayerfrom Stumptown, Oregon
"I purchased the knife for my 2006 elk camp trip and it came out of the box fairly sharp, but I felt the angle on the edge was too steep.
I spent about an 30-60 minutes in the woodshop working through diamond stones from 325 to 600 to 750 to 1200 grit and got the angle softened to right where I wanted it. I finished up on a 6000 grit waterstone and had the mirror smooth and razor edge I wanted and was ready for my hunt.
2nd day on my eastern oregon trip I got my opportunity on a spike that popped out of the woods at less than 100 feet. Dropped him in one shot and it was time to test my new blade.
The Freeman is a very comfortable size and weight, feels solid in my hand and the blade is short enough that its easy to be precise while cutting.
I knew the S30V was supposed to hold an edge longer than other steels, but I was truly impressed at the end of the day after a complete field dressing and skinning job on an animal ~250-300 lbs that it was still cutting like a razor to the last shaving of thin muscle tissue from the hide as it came loose from the carcass.
The sweep to the blade was ideal for the job, no unintended punctures in the hide or organs. The stiff fixed blade cut thick hide, muscle, tendons, cartilage with a predictable and confident feel.
I'm back from my trip and all this blade needs is a quick 10-15 minutes on the 6000 grit waterstone again and I would be ready for my next elk.
As an Oregonian it was easy for me to select a Gerber product, I've also gotten good use of their hatchet and a folding gator-mate over the years. I struggled to spend the extra dollars over the basic freeman to get the S30V and my decision came down to 3 factors: 1) leather sheath on the S30V vs nylon 2) beautiful cocobolo handles on the S30V (the woodworker in me couldn't resist) 3) the higher quality steel. Taken together and after putting the blade to a real field test I am very satisfied and would recommend the fixed blade S30V to any hunter looking for a solid and high performing knife.
Good hunting -LW"

Last Knife I'll Ever Buy,November 21, 2006
By cschwizerfrom Salem, Va
"This year I decided I was going to spend a little money on myself and purchase a knife that will last me for years to come. When I stumbled upon this knife I immediately liked it because of the looks. The dark handle and the black blade really look great and it came with a leather sheath. When I got the knife though, I was very pleasantly surprised with the feel of it. The knife is perfectly balanced and has a reassuring weight to it. It feels solid. The first test of the knife came on the first day of archery season on a nice six pointer. The knife zipped right thorugh the sking and anything else that needed cutting and still remained sharp. The only draw back is the texturing on the handle. It feels great and increases your grip, but it is a tough to clean when blood and sinew is stuck in it."
