ameristep bark bit,
November 2, 2009
By CaptainK1521
from Newton NJ
|
"I was not all that happy with this piece. First of all to use it you have to haul your cordless drill out to your hunting spot and we all know they can be kind of heavy. After putting in a couple of steps I decided it was easier to put them in by hand and almost as fast as you have to put each step in the device and tighten it up before screwing in."

Works well but not perfect,
November 2, 2009
By PAHunter1

"This tool made putting in the first 5 or 6 steps go a lot faster. Unfortunatly it takes both hands to set each step inside so I had to climb up and down a lot. It was hard to set the tree step in straight. I was screwing the steps into oak so even with a 21+ volt cordless you could only get the steps in about 2/3 to 3/4 of the way on full torque. Still a lot easier than trying to start them without a tool and the price was not too expensive so I will use it again."

Decent Product,
September 30, 2009
By Bowhunter425

"You need a good powerful drill for this product to be worth using while setting up stands otherwise the drill and the bark bit will just be dead weight. Works especially well when hunting from hickory or other soft wood trees. Works best with Ameristep steps."

"the bark bit works great. but the PLASTIC knob used on the locking screw broke after only a few times. Also the threads needed to be drilled out, and rethreaded, because they didn't last much longer."

Not easy to use,

By stollcc

"I could not wait to use this when I received it in the mail. It started fine with the first few steps from the ground, but once you get up into the tree were you can only use one arm/hand at a time, it was very difficult to use. I would not recommend this product."

Ameristep bark bit,
August 11, 2008
By andy9086
from Michigan
|
"Don't waste your money. It is a good idea, it just doesn't work that good. If you get the step started, (hard to do) your drill won't have enough power to finish the job. I'm in construction and have tried lots of tools. I used a Milwaukee 28 volt drill, this is the best cordless drill that I have ever used and it would not do the job."

Not worth the frustration!,
December 31, 2007
By rescuetink
|
"I thought this was a great idea, as we always took a drill out to predrill holes for our steps. I just got frustrated trying to keep the steps in, and get them to go in straight. I went back to the old method, drill a hole and use the hand sleeve that goes over the steps to screw them in."

Ameristep Bark Bit,
October 1, 2007
By rt014
from Adirondacks, NY
|
"Wish I had this thing sooner. It definitely makes screwing in tree steps a less aggravating process, particulary as starting the step is often the hardest part. It is a little tricky to get the step lined up perfectly straight, but not a major issue. I'd recommend it."

This product doesn't work,
September 20, 2007
By hilclimber

"This bit doesn't even fit the steps. I tightened the steps into the bit, and as soon as you turn the drill they fall out. The bit doesn't fit the steps at all...too long in the shank basically. I need to find out how to return this worthless piece of junk!"

Ameristep Drill Bit,
November 28, 2006
By MeYou
|
"If you are using tree steps that are compatable i.e. ameristep tree steps, then it works well. I tried another brand of tree step because they were thicker and seemed safer than the ameristep tree steps, but they were too big to fit the bit."

Don't waste your time!,
November 28, 2006
By JRugs
from Wisconsin
|
"Very neat idea but it needs to go back to the drawing board. I tried to use this with Ameristep brand steps, so there should not have been a compatability problem. 1st, the step would not stay tightly in the bit and it jumped out constantly while I tried it install. Next, the shaft for the bark bit didn't lock in my drill's chuck and almost rounded off after a couple steps. Lastly, my drill (18V B&D) just about ripped my arm off from the torque needed to get the step into a birch tree. Don't waste your time or risk injuring yourself with this item!"
