"I bought my first unit in 2003 to take to Africa. Since then I've carried one with me not only fishing and hunting in the U.S., but also to South America, Europe, and Mexico. It is small enough to pack in your luggage as well as carry on your butt pack. When in foreign hotels, I fill it from the sink and use it to brush my teeth as well as to drink from during the day. I've filled it from African rivers and Mexican streams and Chilean waters and never had a problem. Some will complain about the difficulty of squeezing water through this unit. Well, there is a lot of pressure drop across filters like this so it is to be expected. Mostly you should drink through the straw like a fountain soda. This is a purification unit, not just a filter, so a little iodine taste and hard squeeze is not a problem when compared to the possible alternatives. For larger volumes of water in camp, definitely use the pump type purification system, but this is a darned good item to have with you when away from home."
"I bought the 26 oz and the refill cartridages. I used this on a week long kayaking trip down the Guadalupe River and this thing was awesome! I used it from crystal clear spring water of the San Marcos river to the muddier Guadalup Easy to use.
My recommendation is to get the bigger of the two if you plan on using it away from a water source.
It is lightweight and excellent for both a primary and supplemental water supply for one person. Especially for when the weight of multiple gallons of water is out of the question. It saved me from carrying 20+ pounds of water on my yak! Although, I recommend it for only one or two people, I will definately always keep this in my pack whenever I plan on heading out for a couple days -- freshwater kayaking, hunting, fishing, mountain biking, and/or camping."

"Standing in the cold water of a trout stream wishing I could just scoop up an icy bottle full, but knowing better, is frustrating! The Katadyn Extream is convenient, just an empty bottle until you want a drink! It is somewhat difficult to squeeze, and delivers a small stream of water, but it isn't a standard squeeze bottle. More convenient than bouncing a quart of water on my hip all day."

"This is a very utile piece of equipment, but one needs to save it for that huge adventure, and in that event, one needs to stow extra filters, just in case. It's AMAZING for pure water "on the go", but one needs to be using it consistently to get a good use of it. It couldn't be used as a back-up, because once the virustat is opened, it's open. It takes significant breaking in each time, which makes it seem like once it's in service, it demands to stay the primary source of water. Unless there is a great need for water, (Large party.) where you can use a few filtering methods, the high efficiency, cleanable pump filters are a better choice. There is no cleaning, only replacing. It's all made easier by not installing the charcoal, but how do you keep the iodine cartridge fresh? Of all of this, the biggest drawback is the charcoal is the first part of the filter, if you even have it installed. The iodine is the last, so you can't keep it sealed, and have it in reserve if you need it. The charcoal should be the last stage so it will take out the iodine taste. As it is, the only thing the charcoal does is remove the taste of the water so all you'll taste is iodine. Good only if you're souce is nasty.
Bottom line, it's a good purifier. It's inexpensive, but not convenient enough for what it seems to be for. Best used as a primary source of water, yet only worth it in an environment with tainted water, and only for an individual. For most of the time, it's just an expensive water bottle that makes the water taste like a hospital. Which begs the question, "Who is this thing for?""

"Mid January the temperatures in Patagonia Chile hit 85-95 degrees. We had two weeks of guided fishing on some of the finest brown trout waters I had ever seen. Without having the Katadyn Exstream Purifier Bottles with us we could not have stayed on the water as long as we did. They are light to walk in, then filled from the river provide safe drinking without any worry or concerns as to harmful consequences. The Chilian guides thought the bottles were fantastic and as you can drink without touching the mouthpiece, its easy to share. No reservation regarding reccomending this life saving product whatsoever."

"This bottle is not what it appeared to be to me. The actual volume of water that it is possible to squeeze through the filter is about half what the the bottle holds. The result is excessive weight all the time (from filter and unuseable water) and less overall volume. I'd recommend using the more traditional purifying pump and a regular water bottle."

"I have used the Katadyn Purifier bottle for three years on trips up in Canada. The bottle does exactly what it is designed for, and that is to provide safe drinking water. I have drank a lot of water through it and have never been sick.
The taste of the water is fair. It is better than using the iodine tablets, but it is not as good as bottled water. The only reason that I gave it a 4 rating is that the flow of the water is a little slow. Secondly, it is hard to get water to come out when the bottle is below the half full mark. Generally, I end up sucking the water out of the spout at that point. But the water is safe to drink. When looking at the different Katadyn products, I would really recommend the Extreme model as it has both a virus filter and a bacteria filter. Some of the models don't have both and both are needed for completely safe drinking water."

"Bought and used the Katadyn Exstream on an Elk hunt in Northern Idaho this past fall. In the area we was hunting, Free Ranging cattle roamed. For a week I drank out of the streams in the area and also drank from one stream that had an Elk wallow about 5yrds up stream. Never had any trouble with this unit at all. The only drawback with the Katayn Exstream is that the water flow is a little slow and there is a hint of iodine taste when the cartridge is new (The only reason for a 4-star rating), both something that can be lived with. Wouldn't be afraid to drink from a standing puddle of water with this Purifier. Nice having your water purification in one compact unit. Highly recommend it if space and quality is at the top of your list......"

"Upon assembling the 34 oz. unit, I noticed that the cyst filter was deformed, and had an apparent significant gap in this filter. If you buy one, check it carefully for defects. I asked Katadyn to send a replacement cyst filter, but no response. I recommend the $9.99 "water straw"."
