"his is my first reading of Ruark, who is a master of painting word pictures. You can practically smell, taste and hear the experiences he narrates. His growth as a hunter is detailed by nuance and subtlety, and although it occurrs in Africa, parallels most new hunters experience in growth, and maturity."

"Super book. No wonder Ruark's writing has stood the test of time. He puts into words many of the feelings I've had as a hunter but have been unable to accurately define. The book itself is well made with good size print."

"The book is fun and easy to read. As some people have said in the last few years, the book gives a picture of African hunting in the middle of the Twentieth Century, and it no longer represents an accurate picture of African hunting as it is now. I would still highly recommend it to anyone who wishes to acquire knowledge of Africa, its people and its fauna. The book is set in what is now Tanzania and tells about the series of experiences of journalist Robert Ruark and his wife on safari with Professional Hunter Harry Selby. The opinions expressed by Mrs. Ruark about the adventure are sometimes insightful and sometimes funny. It is definitely worth reading."
