The one-piece reel frames are die-cast then machined from a special aluminum alloy for unparalleled lightweight strength. Every detail is CNC-machined to fit bearings, shafts and gears precisely on each reel, so the frame won't flex even under heavy cranking. These reels have a rugged TiMag salt bail system and a Multi-Stack Magnum™ Ceramic Drag that will not swell even under extreme heat. The multiple, oversized drag washers in the front and rear of the spools distributes pressure for accurate, consistent performance. The MAGLOK™ magnetic Continuous Anti-Reverse provides solid hooksets and zero backplay in the rotor and stainless steel handle. These reels also have six-layer Saltgard™ corrosion protection, and a forged aluminum spool.

Cabo PT disappointing, October 23, 2009
By SpinningTop from Auckland, New Zealand

"I bought a Cabo 40 as I needed a spinning reel for saltwater use. I have a Quantum Energy 30 which has performed flawlessly for 3-4 years and thought the Cabo would be a similarly engineered saltwater version. Out of the box the reel had a "graunch" at slow retrieve speed almost as if there was damage to the internal gears. Sent the reel back for a refund. Do not expect a high end reel to be defective from the get go. Wait for the saltwater version of the Quantum Energy as its cheaper and lighter. Very disappointed in the Cabo. Quantum needs to tighten up its QC standards."

    Cabo PT70 spinniNG REEL, September 21, 2009
    By UncleRob from Connecticut

"This reel is very un-blanced, hard to reel larger fish in and does not run smoothly at all. The bail often stays open even after several turns of the handle."

    By Rainbow9853 from Malaysia

"Overall this is an average reel.
    so far thies has happened:
The small clip(one of the two) holding the winding wire in place comes off while winding in the reel during fishing.
The new reel cannot be wound in smoothly ;even after some lubrication still has some creakng osund.
The winding wire broke with one of the reel.

Bail failure first time out, August 28, 2009
    By kicker01 from San Francisco

"I bought this reel for our ten day trip to Zihuatanejo Mexico. We intended to use it for, small tuna, jacks, dorado and grouper. Unfortunately, the bail broke within an hour of our first cast and I wound up focusing more on the reel than fishing. I opened the reel after we returned to the states and noticed that several of the components within the reel were already showing signs of rust and deterioration in spite of thorough rinsing after each use. Two of the skippers in Mexico stated that they won't use Quantum reels. I will never purchase another Quantum product."

BEST machine for the $$, February 7, 2009
By secra20 from North Fork of Long Island and east...

"My partner and I are top water pluggers on eastern Long Island, plying the rocky stuctures by boat of Plum, Gardners, Great Gull, and Fishers Islands and in the Fall, on the Montauk...we concede we'll never see the volume of hook ups from our pencil poppers that others may enjoy with bait, but rejoice in the fact that there's nothing, NOTHING more exciting than when a big tail comes up and WHACKS that lure...then again, we're not meat fishermen like so many others... catch and release works for us, and we're always looking forward to playing another day, and gleaning another challenge...
...to that avail, I have to say, of all the spinners I've used, many makes and brands, the Quantum Cabo is simply the best one I have ever had...day in and out, it has never failed me, as others, sadly have...Cabos simply RULE!...
...when stealth is important, for my 'stand-off' sticks, I have a 30 matched to a G. Loomis GWR981s and a 40 to a St. Croix TS80HF...my 'in-tight' sticks are both St. Croix 7' Premiers with Shimano Stradic FIs... all are sufficient, but the drags on the Cabos are really remarkable...and blow the Shimanos away by comparison...the 8' St. Croix/Cabo 40 combo has landed large Bass and hundreds of alligator Bluefish to 16 lbs and never failed me...I recently had that reel taken down completely for the first time in four seasons and the drag washers looked 'new'...how do you explain that??...
...only two downsides, and both minor...Cabos are heavier... and larger then other comparable makes, ie., the Cabo 40 is MUCH larger (and heavier) than a Stradic/Sustain4000, and the 30 is the same apparent size, excepting the spool volume... so consider that...
...and secondly, QUANTUM - "Why don't you give us a SPARE SPOOL in the box like Shimano, instead of that lame neoprene case we'll never use?"

"I love this reel. It operates smoothly and has caught me many stripers out on the Cape Cod Bay. My friends and I mostly fish top-water with plugs and soft bait lures. This reel matched up with an equivelant medium action rod is a fantastic combination."

    Great reel, June 30, 2008
    By fishboy617 from Marshfield, MA

"I bought the 70 size to go on my 6'3" butterfly jigging rod. Spooled it up with 50 lb Power Pro and 50 lb flouro leader. when i was in Florida, I kept this combo ready as a tarpon rod, and it may have been overkill. Never saw a tarpon, did battle with some good sized grouper before the knot slipped. Lost the fish due to lack of foresight , not faulty equipment. the drag is unbeleivable, and i felt no frame flex as i have with my other cheaper reels. the egg shaped handle is also very comfortable on those long days of jigging. great reel for the price."

Nice, but not fantastic, June 1, 2008
    By MisterGO from Louisiana

"This is a nice reel: smooth, light, good features (40 size). But it is exagerating to say it is just like a $500 reel. there are a couple of bits on it that feel cheap like the anti-reverse switch. That being said it is an outstanding value at the price.
Also note that although advertised at up to 12lb for the 40 size, the spool shows up to 14lb.
I am pleased Quantum put out light tackle specifically for saltwater, hopefully other manufacturers follow suit.

extremely reliable Cabo's (for the money), February 26, 2008
By gittem from Offshore fisherman - Florida - Naples, Keys

"the Quantum Cabo saltwater spinning reals are rugged machines that can stand up to big fish and the abuse of a long day on the water with multiple casts/heavy duty use! Some people say they are too heavy, and in my opinion those guys are powder puffs that look for something to complain about and never catch big fish. The bails can break, but the drag stands up and functions well for years! {bails can be replaced easily, cheeply) I love these reels - especially the affordable price."

Cabo PT Spinning Reel, December 14, 2007
By BLFTUNA from North East, MD

"I recently purchased and used a Cabo PT 80 spinning reel for a Tuna trip to North Carolina. I own several Quantum spinning reels for freshwater, and a few for saltwater fishing. After trying the new Butterfly Jig fishing set-up this past summer, I wanted to get an outfit without investing $600 in a spinning reel. Since I was so pleased with my current Quantum reels, I checked out the Cabo and Boca PT's at half the price of the Shimano BF Jigging capable reels.

I loaded the reel with 80# Tuff Line Braid and used a 25' fluorocarbon leader of 80# test. While trolling in the Gulf Stream of the NC coast, I dropped back metal jig's when a trolling rod went down and was able to land 40#-60# Yellowfin Tuna before the trolling anglers were anywhere near landing their fish.

The Cabo had an incredable drag and set at 18# (all I could handle but nowhere near the reel's capability) I was able to smoke fish in no time. The cranking power was superb, smooth, and faultless. Coupled to a Shimano Butterfly Spinning rod 5'3" and rated for up to 200# braid I was able to land my fish without feeling beat-up from a long tiring battle.

If you want to get into Butterfly jigging big fish, you need very strong tackle with strong gears, large line capacities, good cranking power, and a drag that will not faulter under extreme loads. The Cabo was able to handle drag settings up to 45#, but I couldn't handle that much pressure. At 61 yr's young, and a bad back and nerve damage in my right arm, I was impressed at the benefit of using spinning tackle over my lever drags. I plan to get another Cabo for surf casting plugs to Stripers, and working top water's over tuna in a chunk slick on overnigher's in the canyon's next summer.

    Cabo 70PTs, October 14, 2007
By BigToothBlues from LI NY North Shore

"By far the best saltwater spinning reel I have have the pleasure to own. Had the bait runner and a friend has the Stella and the cabo in my opinion blows both of them away. I know the stella is a six hundred dollar reel but feel the two and then you tell me. The hook sets are instant haven't lost one fish and I'm catching striped bass and blues, 34 inch one yesterday! I took the entire reel apart to see how well it was made and It is a monster in and out. Use 50pd braided test and your all set. Nothing in this or higher price ranges compare."

Quality spinning reels from Quantum, June 5, 2007
    By crankshaft from Keyport, NJ

"I purchased the Cabo PT70 for surf fishing. Metal construction throughout made for an extremely tough and rugged reel. Excellent line capacity for mono or super braids, a fast retrieve ratio, plus a large cranking handle add up to a perfect surf or offshore reel."

Quantum Cabo PT, April 17, 2007
    By 12Eagles from Rhode Island

"Although this is the smoothest reel I have ever used, I think the bulletproof construction added a little weight that other manufacturers reserve for spool capacity. When balanced with my particular rod, I chose to spool up with braided line to get the capacity I wanted. I still love the reel, especially the drag, and would recommend it to any buyer serious about their fishing. If you only fish occasionally, you might want to try one of Quantum's less expensive line of reels, which are also top notch."
