Not a good fishfinder,
July 12, 2009
By baitum
|
"Wife got me a x96 Lowrance for a christmas gift. Unit failed within about 2 hrs of use, sent back to Lowrance and they sent me a new unit. Now my unit 2 yrs later will not read bottom. Somtimes says 3.5 feet when I am in 12 feet of water and generally will not read anything beyond 100 feet or so, said I was in 90 feet of water when I know the water is about 17 feet. My unit had very few fishing hours on it, my guess is less than 200hrs. I thought Lowrance would be a good fish finder but not this one. Now I have to decide if I try and get this one fixed or buy a new one. Probably will not buy another lowrance product again. My and families experience with Hummingbird has been pretty good. I would not recommend this unit to anyone."

"I have always been a Lowrance fan. I have only gotten to use it once, but appears to do what I want it to. Hopefully I'll get to play around with it more in the coming weeks. My last unit was an X-85, loved it, this appears to do everything that one did for a lot less $$."

Junk,

"Worked great for the first year. Now it won't hold bottom past 80 ft. as stated below. Doesn't mark anything at all anymore. Sporadically says i'm in 2.9 feet of water when I'm in 60 plus or more. I wouldn't get another one."

Junk!!,
June 1, 2009
By csteff1

"I purchased this unit last spring after my last Lowrance fish finder failed. I used this unit on two one day fishing trips without problems and didn't use again until this spring. This unit will not keep the bottom, even at trolling or drifting speeds and in shallow water. Any time you reach 80' depth it will automatically loose bottom. I have re-run wires, inspected and cleaned transducer and had others look at the unit trying to see if I messed up the settings. Only way it reads any kind of bottom is to put the unit in manual depth mode, rather than auto depth. Still flashes strange depths but at least it shows a weak bottom so you can see where you are. Frustrating when trying to enjoy a day of fishing. DO NOT BUY THIS JUNK!!"

Lowrance X96 vs. Humingbird 565 Portable Units,
May 28, 2009
By BobV27
from Harrison NY
|
"Ordered the Lowrance X96 Portable unit to use on my rowboat. First the package came with no instructions on how to setup the portable unit, etc. I called Cabela's and used some common sense and between the two, put the package together. Was not impressed with how the portable package went together. I ignored this fact and tried the unit out. Went thru every feature, etc. I was happy with the unit overall but felt that the screen resolution was not very good (320 x 320). I looked at the next Lowrance unit higher and the screen resolution was fine @ 480 x 480. So I checked out the Humingbird 565 Portable since it had a higher screen resolution, more power and came with a dual beam transducer. I was very impressed with the screen resolution (640 x 320). Was also very impressed with how the portable unit went together - came with instructions and was a much more solid setup, wires secured, etc. Overall, I found that the 565 did not have all of the functionality of the X96 features and settings but it had all of the important ones. I decided to keep the 565 and return the X96. Would recommend the 565 over the X96 any day."

Good Sonar for the price,
May 19, 2009
By PAWalleye15447

"I have had a couple runs with the unit so far. It is very easy to use....downloaded the X97 Simulator from the website since the X96 wasn't available. The units are very close if not the same in design and in use of functions. The simulator was a great tool to use from your pc to get used to the unit before hitting the water. The screen is very easy to read in all light conditions and shows good detail of whats beneath the boat. The only problems I have had with the unit is that I cannot seem to be able to see the fish arches even after playing with all the settings. The unit works great in fish reveal mode but I can't seem to see the fish arches due to alot of clutter on the screen when not in fish mode. Also the transducer bracket is cheaply made compared to the solid bracket that came with my old hummingbird sonar. In the manual it also states that the unit comes with a plastic face plate to protect the screen but it was not in the box and when I contacted via e-mail Lowrance 3 times I never received an answer to my question about the cover. Overall, it seem like a good sonar and some of the problems I have might be of my own doing and be resolved after using the unit more, but I was really disappointed in the customer service Lowrance provided to my questions."

Great Detail,

"Bought the Lowrance X96 due to the success of other lowrance products. Not disappointed. This thing is awesome. My older unit had only 800 peak to peak watts. This one being 1500 shows great detail and returns are fast. Did not lose contact at 60 mph. Easy to navigate through the screens and other options. Could not be more pleased."

Lowrance x 96,
October 7, 2008
By PeterJohnMike
from Connecticut
|
"The unit is all it's said to be in terms of portability. The suction cup mount for the transducer works very well and the screen is very readable. My reason for not giving 5 stars is the manual. The screen shots the manual provides are not informative enough so as to give a novice SONAR type like me a decent education. Specifically, the fish echo - which the manual acknowledges is the most difficult to get - is nevertheless used throughout the manual with little help in defining most other echoes appearing on the screen. There is a quick start page which is helpful to get up and running but Lowrance needs to do a better job in helping new users interpret the screen."

Good Unit,

By Troutbumm

"This product is very user friendly and can be put on and taken off in no time. The only trouble I had with it was that sometimes the suction cup would come off my aluminum boat. This didn't happen very often and was very easy to reapply it when it did. I have also used this product with my float tube to find spring holes in some of our local ponds and lakes. For the price this is a steal."

"We had an old Lowrance sonar unit and loved it. When it quit working we were really upset and spent a great deal of time looking at various new units and came back to the lowrance family. We're very happy with the new unit and upgraded techonology from our old unit! It is easy to use and has a ton of fun settings to play with. The picture quality is awsome also."

"I purchased this for every day fishing and using on trips up north camping. I can't wait to use this for ice fishing this winter. It was really easy to use right away. I didn't even have to read the user manual. Setting this up only took a few mins. The battery has a very long life. I used it 3 times for about 2-3 hours now and still haven't charged it yet. The screen is easly readable and very clear. I hope this help you out......"
