Poor Wading Staff ...... A Fair Anchor,June 18, 2009
By FlyfishingFoolfrom Missouri
"I purchased the SpringBrook graphite wading staff and used it for a week's fly-fishing trip. The foam handle is barely sufficient to keep the handle end of the staff floating, but only briefly until the staff fills with water. Within a few minutes of dropping the staff into the water, each section of the staff fills up completely with water - thus the staff then performs like an anchor, pulling down on your wading belt. Additionally, since it is now heavier than the surrounding water, it does not float downstream like a wading staff with a floating handle, instead it drifts around down by your ankles, getting tangled in your legs and even tripping you if you are not careful.
When you pull the staff out of the water, you are now holding a graphite pipe full of water, not exactly light weight. If you use the staff while filled with water I can guarantee that the foam grip will rub blisters on your hand (my personal experience). The alternative is to drain the water from the staff each and every time you want to use it to move a few steps. To drain the staff, you have to take each section apart and drain each individual section, and the handle section can take up to 2 minutes to drain every time.
Basically I found the SpringBrook staff to be a good concept that was poorly designed/constructed - the hole where the strap attaches into the top of the handle acts like a vent, allowing water to enter into each section until the whole staff sinks. I returned my SpringBrook staff as soon as I got home.
Finally, like all wading staffs joined together with bungee cords, if you get the SpringBrook wading staff stuck in mud or rocks, it comes apart when you try to pull it up - I had this happen when I was very close to losing my balance on a small flat of sand/silt when I got a wading boot stuck. My new Simms wading staff locks open and will not pull apart."

Tough Water for Wading,December 8, 2008
By Hop1from Upstate South Carolina
"Just got this wading staff and went to Wind River Canyon in WY for the big ones in late Nov. with my son and his friend. Extremely difficult to even get to the water (40 ft. of 45 deg. rocky slope) and very few places to wade or cross. Worked well in crossing with water up to waist and strong. Couldn't have done it without the staff. John Gierach, author of "Trout Bum", says this river is "unfishable from the banks", but we did it. Good product and very pleased."

A Reliable Assitance,October 6, 2008
By cvflyfishfrom Denver, CO
"I tend to want to get the spots on the river where the fish are. Over the years I've found currents and unseen, underwater obstacles are much less intimidating with a good quality collapsible staff. Additionaly spending a few bucks more for a light-weight, quality graphite staff is worth it. I did have to sew the base of the case (made the case a few inches shorter) to raise the handles higher above the top edge so I could get a hold of the collapsed staff easier. Easily done and may not be an issue to some. Nice rig."

Spring Brook Wading Staff,September 10, 2008
By Preston10from Bakersfield, CA
"I have had three of the Spring Brook Wading Staffs. All three have resulted with the bottom knot pulling loose from the bottom section. Spring Brook replaced two of the staffs without charge but I gave up after the third failure."

Spring Brook Wading Staff,April 14, 2008
By Marine46from Kiel, Wisconsin
"I've used the staff several times and found it very reliable. I like the size when folded down, very compact. My one negative is not having a mechanism to attach to my belt. The lanyard is very convenient for attaching to the fishing vest. Overall I would recommend the purchase."

Spring Brook Collapsible Wading Staff,February 19, 2008
By DigitalGeorgefrom Atlanta, Ga
"I am very happy with the Spring Brook Collapsible Wading Staff. At first I was a little concerned about the synthetic material. But I find it to be very light weight and easy to use. My previous wading staff would always get stuck after a days' use. I would spent what seemed like an eternity breaking apart the sections. This never happens with this new staff. I also like it's length. It is longer than the other staff I used to have. That works out great when I'm poking my way through strong flowing water. Overall I think this is one of the best Wading Staff's I've experienced. But I have only owned two of them. DigitalGeorge"

Wading staff,April 16, 2007
By progator
"I like how it pulls out and goes together, but only down fall is when it wedges in a rock or mud it comes apart. So if your looking for a stiff wading staff that will support you threw the rough terrain waters then this is not your wading staff."

Great staff, but...,April 12, 2007
By JackSavfrom Lindenwold, NJ
"I really like this wading staff. It unfolds and snaps together quickly and tightly. It is light and stable, everything you'd want in a wading staff. But...the included holster is a nylon fabric, which makes it very difficult to put the staff back into it using only one hand. I found this very annoying and inconvienient."

Spring Brook Collapsible Wading Staff,November 21, 2006
By JimB01from New Mexico
"This wading staff is a required piece of equipment when wading any stream or river when you need that third point for stable travel. I found that the handy case allowed me to attach it to my wading belt and kept it handy during the hike to the river. Once in the river the lanyard allowed me to let it float downstream yet keeping it handy. I don't go in the river without my collapsible wading staff."
