DUTCH OVEN REVIEW,
May 4, 2009
By GENERIC
from WASHINGTON STATE CAMPER
|
"THESE OVENS ARE VERY WELL MADE (SOLID) AND DO NOT APPEAR TO HAVE ANY WARPING OR EXCESSIVELY ROUGH CASTING ON THE INTERIOR.
THEY COME PRE-SEASONED WHICH TAKES THE GUESS WORK OUT OF TRYING TO GET IT RIGHT ON THE FIRST TIME OUT. A NON-STICK SURFACE READY TO GO.
PACKAGING IS TOP-NOTCH SO THEY DO NOT ARRIVE DAMAGED IN ANY WAY."

Wow .. what a utensil!,
July 21, 2008
By Fouges

"This baby is big. As in 30 lb. Turkey big. Get the picture? If you want to make stew for 50 people, this pan is for you. The pan came in a cook ready state. I was really impressed with its size (14") and heft. I would recommend this product to anyone, especially those who slow cook, cook for large numbers of people, enjoy making soups, and the like. All in all, a great product that didn't disappoint!"

Baking Bread,
February 20, 2008
By Butch599
from Rochester, NY
|
"I bought the 10" diameter oven specifically for baking bread and have been pleased with the results. The nonstick surface is very effective and a fresh baked loaf can be lifted from the oven with nothing sticking at all. The second time I used it I was disappointed to find a small blister in the nonstick coating on the outside of the oven. While cleaning, this small piece of coating lifted off to reveal the cast iron surface underneath. This has not deteriorated in subsequent usage. This fault might be more significant if it was inside the oven. Now some feedback about capacity. On the web site a 10" oven is said to have a depth of 3 3/4" and a capacity of 6 qts. The box containing the oven confirmed 10" diameter but stated a capacity of 8 qts. In fact the oven has a diameter of 10", a depth of 4 1/2" and capacity of 4 qts! No problem for my purpose but others should check."

"This product is great. I got a 10" and a 12". I use the 10" all the time in the kitchen, even for baking bread. The 12" is big enough for large recipes. Quality was excellent. If they had an 8" I would buy it."

Great Cabelas quality, sizes are way off.,
February 20, 2008
By fishes31

"These camp ovens are of fine quality, as usual from Cabelas, but the sizes are way off. I originally purchased a Lodge 12" dutch oven, only to receive it and it measured 13.25" across without the lid on (much larger than I wanted). So, I ordered a 10" Cabela's camp oven, hoping for the right size (it appeared dutch ovens were running bigger than their advertised size). When I received it, it actually only measured about 9.5" at the widest point without the lid on (about 8.5" at the bottom, where the Cabela's tech rep said the measurements are supposed to be taken!) In addition, the bail (wire handle) and pot "tabs" aren't shaped right so it hangs off kilter to one side...If you are planning on hanging it over the fire, it will hang tilted and won't cook evenly (the pot handles are not cast perfectly square, like the Lodge ovens are). These camp ovens would be great for in house/oven/setting on an open fire, but don't plan to hang it over a fire."

Cast iron camp stoves,
January 8, 2008
By ttocs
|
"I found the cast iron camp stove to be an excellent addition to my cooking utilities. The weather hasen't been thhe best so I used it on the stove at home. Much to my chagrin, the stove is too large for my in house cooking. I found it cooks great on the front burner and the way eggs cook on its surfacce I was pleasantly surprised I cant wait for the camping mounths to arrive."

Cast Iron Cookware,

By SocialSecurityCamper
from Arizona
|
"The cast iron camp oven is a joy to use. It is pre-seasoned but I added a little more oil to make sure. That proved unnecessary. The oven holds the heat well and distributes it evenly. And the best news . . .Because it is iron I don't need barbells anymore."
