"I know these are sold as decoy retreivers and they work very well for this. But I also use mine for retreiving ducks when knocked down over water. It doesn't replace a well trained Lab, but it is cheaper then a bag of dog food."

"When you try to grab that decoy that's just out of reach, this is the pole to use. I have purchased all three sizes through the years and I find this one the best. The only problem you'll have is "who in the boat will get to use the pole. It's adjustable up to 12 feet and packs easily when not in use. If your a great shot you can use it to pick up your ducks that you drop next to the boat. But like all good pieces of equipment you need to take care not to bend out of shape."

"I use it every chance I can . We hunt a flooded canal which doesn't allow alot of access to downed birds due to water depth . The extra 18' of reach is outstanding . Every Waterfowl hunter needs one of these ."

not bad,

"I bought this to make it easier to retrieve ducks from the shore of small ponds. The first day I used it I had it fully extended and had to lift a duck over some thick weeds. It bent a little one section away from the end. I continued to use it all day and we got a lot of ducks with it. I was able to staighten it out not too bad and I realize that it probably wasn't made for lifting any kind of weight. Overall I was really impressed though, I got the 18' one and it sure made life a lot easier. It had a really nice feel too it and good balance, I was pretty impressed with the stability of it when fully extended. I am thinking of grabbing another one just for backup."

CheezHead Bri,

"Have used the 18' model for two consecutive years in the field and I love it!
It does sag a tad when its extended to its max length, but that has to be expected within reason. You do need to be careful when its fully extended too not to bend a segment too much - or it won't easily collapse back together without a little re-bending. Most of it is technique and once you get the hang of using it, its not really an issue anymore.
Surprisingly, you'll learn quick you have to have good footing - don't think you can stretch out 18' with one arm and keep balanced! Its very light weight - its the leverage that'll cause to take a drink if you're not careful!
Also works awesome at retrieving ducks too! One landed in a river and the current was too quick - but was able to grab the pole and extend it and get it in the water faster than I would've been able to walk thru the muck to grab the bird by hand (haven't learned to run in the muck yet!). 18' again is a long distance to walk in muck thats a foot thick!
One thing it really needs was a shoulder strap! Ended up getting 1" polyethylene straps with an adjustment slider and quick-release buckle and mounted to the outermost pole at both ends with hose clamps. Just a quick pinch to release the strap and I can pull this off without getting it twisted with backpack or gun straps. Bingo!
In the last days of the season (here in Wisc at least) bring a towel with to dry it off before you collapse it.....or you won't be able to re-open it after it freezes shut! Also good to rinse off and let it dry out in the garage expanded after each use to prevent some stinks!
Another great Avery product that I can't imagine hunting without"

"Clearly the retriever is high quality. Have not been out on the water with it, but it extends way out there and has good spine strength even at full extension...its gotta work! I imagine this pole will come in handy around the house too...I envision pulling frisbeys (sp?) off the roof with it one day."

If you don't have a boat or dog this is a must!!!!,
December 2, 2008
By VtIceFisher616
from The Burg, Vermont

"This is the greatest duck hunting product I've ever purchased!
To start this decoy retriever is built Avery tough, it is extremely light weight, and it is affordable. If you don't have a dog or a boat or even if you occasionally puddle jump from land then this product is for you!
If you've ever hunted from shore then you know that the steepness of the bank plays a huge factor in your decoy effectiveness. If the bank drops off and it gets deep quickly then you aren't able to set your decoys out as effectively.
If you can reach out that extra 18' once your at your waders limits then you can place your decoys out that much farther which allows you to make for a more realistic spread. All of us know that the more natural your spread is the more ducks you'll bag.
On top of improving your spread this product can save your life. All of you who have been over your waders know that they sure as heck don't float and I personally have taken that unavoidable last step that seems to go from 5' to 30' deep.
I almost drowned that day, fortunately I walked away with only mild hypothermia and a few mouthfuls of not-so-delicious lake water but this never would have happened to me if I would have had this product in my decoy bag.
So don't pass this product by it is worth ten times its weight in gold and could save your life."

"When it gets out to its' longest it gives a bit too much. Likely not much you can do about it. I recommend getting the long one and then not putting out the last 4' as that last stick is weak.
Works real well."
