Great Bullet,
September 17, 2009
By baldwind

"I have a handmade 45 cal. flintlock rifle with a green mountain barrel. It has a slow round ball twist but the 285 grain bullet shoots 1 and one half inch groups at 50 yards anyway. I have not killed a deer as yet with the 45 cal. [which cabelas does not carry at this time] but have killed three deer with a 50 cal. H & R break open Huntsman rifle. All three deer ran less than 20 yards with large blood trails and wound channels. I recovered one of the bullets and they had expanded to twice their size. I shot one deer at over 100 yards with excellent results. Excellent traditional type muzzleloading bullet and would highly recommend them to anyone."

"i wouldn't buy too many of these to start with until you're sure you like 'em. since i'm going to colorado i tried these in a new knight rolling block and about broke the ball starter. by the time i got it seated the nose was so deformed i had doubts about how it'd fly. the 2 bullets i got loaded seemed to group ok, but i gave up after that. there's no way i could reload in the field and still hope the animal would be in range. maybe the bore's a little tight, good luck."

Awesome Hitter,
January 20, 2009
By Screamer013

"I've used these bullets out of my PA Pellet Rifle for the last 3 or so years with outstanding results. They are as accurate as you can shoot with a flintlock and drop deer in their tracks. The heavy weight does not lend itself to produce higher velocities but the bullet more than makes up for that in the punch delivered when it hits it's target. Of the 3 deer shot, not one went farther than 10 yards and none of the bullets were recovered. Excellent accuracy, excellent knockdown power equals excellent deer killer. I highly recommend these to anyone looking for a new black powder bullet."

great hunting bullet,

"I have shot these bullets for several years and have found they shoot well in most TC guns but not so well in CVA model guns. They also seem to shoot well in the Knight and Remington rifles. They are a joy to load with the pre-lubed bullets that are not real messy and they penetrate well on deer sized game and hope they do well on elk this fall."

Freezer Filler,

"I've taken 2 Whitetails with my Cabela's .54 cal. Sporterized Hawken using the 425 grain Great Plains Bullet. All I can say is Wow! I did recover one of the bullets on an 80 yard shot at a doe, it dropped in its tracks with the mushroom sitting under the hide on the opposite shoulder. Retained 100% of its weight and was almost double in frontal area. Second was a 35 yard broadside on a buck, double lung taking out a rib in both directions. Very satisfied with these results!"

Hornady Great Plains,
November 26, 2007
By RetiredNCHunter

"I bought these bullets after reading the reveiws on a lot of different bullets. Since I am mostly deer hunting in pretty heavy cover I wanted something with a lot of stopping power. I sighted in my TC at 100 yds. with 250 grain sabots then shot the Hornady 380 grain bullet much to my surprise the Hornady only dropped 1 in. at 100 yds. with 100 grains of 777 pellets. They seem to seal much better in the barrel than the sabots. I can't wait to put one in a deer."

Good Bullett!!,

By Wishingforfishing

"I used a 425gr Great Plains in my .54 cal muzzleloader; 24"" barrel with a 1 in 28" twist. Great accuracy; I was able to print three-shot one-hole groups at 50yds with iron sights from a bench rest. In the field, I was able to cleanly harvest a cow elk that weighed in at 325lbs at the locker plant after dressing and skinning. Terminal performance was excellent; it broke a rib, completely mushed the liver and one lung and lodged under the skin on the farside after breaking another rib. It mushroomed to almost double in diameter, halfway down its length and lost almost nothing in weight. Slightly more difficult to load since you must seat it fully into the lands of the barrel; but I find that somehow reassuring."

In Love with these bullets,
December 30, 2006
By HCAIII
|
"I an completelly in love with these Great Plains bullets. I am a traditionalist and shoot a CVA Hawken .50 cal. About 5 years ago I reluctantly tried some of these after wounding and loosing a couple deer with patch and balls. I will never use anything else! They are super accurate with the 1:48 twist. The pre-applied lube makes them easy to load. Their knock down power is awsome. I've pulled these out of deer that look exactly like a mushroomed rifle bullet. Thier soft lead really releases it's enery into the animal.
I hope they keep making these forever!"

Better then Sabots,
December 16, 2006
By Ballistician
from Indiana
|
"If you like to drop 'em where they stand instead of tracking, then this is the bullet for you. As stated above, simple, easy, accurate and a "drop dead" on game performer. Engineered advancement through simplicity, made to work better with more muzzleloaders then anything else. Let's face it. Muzzleloaders were designed to work with lead bullets at bore diameter, and at this they excel. These allow your firearms to work most efficiently with any black powder or substitute, and utilize the power that they produce. What I'm talking about is that sabots use light-weight, smaller diameter bullets that are designed for high speed flight with faster burning smokeless powder in their smaller diameter guns. Black powder burns slower, in a larger bore (like a .50 cal vs a .44 or .45 sabot) and therefor produces more torque (like a diesel engine) then speed. by using these bullets, you are using up all that power, with a bullet that is easier to stabilize with their slower twist. It just makes sense. Hope this helps"
