•  Buyer's Guide
When you're planning on an extended backpacking trip, you need socks that keep your feet comfortable and dry. SmartWool Expedition Trekking socks are designed for long miles on the trail and carrying a full pack. The wool in SmartWool socks is culled from New Zealand Merino sheep. SmartWool technology then makes use of Merino wool's natural properties to produce a sock that's soft enough to keep your feet from itching. Lightweight, SmartWool fibers have a hydrophobic interior and hydrophyllic surface that transfer and repels moisture away from the skin. The natural crimp of the Merino wool fiber forms tiny air pockets that let the fabric regulate your temperature, whether it's hot or cold. Trekking socks have a heavy cushion instep for soothing comfort and a high-density sole. The 3 x 1 rib knit top and the increased elastic in the arch area ensure these crew-height socks won't slide down on your feet. 77% Merino wool, 22% nylon and 1% elastic.
Colors: Gray(M-XL), Taupe(M-XL).
Men's Sizes: M(5 to 8-1/2), L(9 to 12-1/2), XL(13-16).

expensive but nice, February 20, 2008
By sockwearer from Bay Area, CA

"I don't generally spend ~$20 for socks, but with a Cabela's gift certificate, I decided to give them a try. They're really comfortable, warm, and ideal for long hikes. The balls of my feet and toes often blister on 15+ mile hikes. I think these socks are the solution to my blister woes."

backpacker's delight, October 1, 2009
By treeplanter from MN

"I just wore my SmartWool socks on a recent 3-day backpacking trip. Used with a thin wicking liner they were perfect for every weather condition we encountered. Just enough warmth but not too much when the sun came out. I bought them on the recommendation of a friend who was wearing them on a recent volunteer work trip abroad. A great purchase!"

Great socks, September 1, 2009

"Finally, a good pair of socks that does what it was designed to do. Keeps my feet nice and comfortable! They are spendy, but, there's nothing like "happy" feet!"

Great Product - But Test Different Thicknesses, June 22, 2009
By Snippy

"These socks made a big difference. The expedition socks worked best for my feet and shoes. I took both the Expedition Trekking Sock and the Medium Weight Sock on a five-day 55 mile hike that covered mostly mountainous area. Both products were quality, but the Expedition Trekking Sock worked best for my feet and the shoes I had. I had little problem with blisters when using the heavier weight sock because there was less movement in my shoe and the thicker sock padded my feet better. My boys used the Medium Weight Socks and had no problems.

The socks worked well even when wet.

My recommendation is to test run both weights of socks with your shoes if planning a substantial hike. Make sure to test both uphill and downhill hiking as your shoes may allow movement for one but not the other.

I tested a liner sock but found that it created problems.

I stepped in water over my boot and was amazed. I did not know that my feet were wet until hours later when I tooks my boots and sox off. I will buy more of these for sure!

SmartWool Expedition Trekking Sock, September 25, 2008
By PastorScott from Kalispell, Montana

"I bought a pair of SmartWool socks a couple of years ago for downhill skiing and loved them, but could never bring myself to spending the money (these are expensive socks) to buying high quality socks for hunting. I mean I already have $200 boots - why spend a bunch of money on socks? The country I hunt elk in is steep and full of dead-fall and other hazards and even with great boots I always end up with blisters. I just went through this elk season wearing SmartWool Expedition Trekking socks (fresh socks each day) and not only did my feet stay warmer and drier than normal, but I did not get a single blister. I now believe socks are more important than boots when it comes to foot care in the rugged mountains where I hunt."

Great socks, May 27, 2008
By eford

"I wore Smart Wool socks everyday from mid-Nov to May in Afghanistan while I was there in the US Army. The socks are the best ones I've ever worn. I have recommended them to everyone going to Afghanistan so their feet can be as warm and well taken care of as I feel mine were, thanks to the socks. Even after numerous washings they're still strong enough to stay up and not feel "crushed" like some cotton socks can be."

warm and comfortable, February 7, 2008
By sefaber from Florence, CO

"i have developed a "cold feet" problem, as i have grown older. my feet sweat profusely. i tried all the sport socks and hunting socks i could get my feet into for years, until i found smart wool. it is absolutely the best for what i do. i bird hunt in the west and southwest and walk all day long for several days in a row. these socks are well made. they provide the cushion i'm looking for and most importantly, keep my feet dry. they're the best."
