"I have had the big axe for 6 years an have not needed to sharpend it.I have used it lots of times. I have cut 4 elk dozens of deer and several pigs legs off at the shoulder and still it cut my finger when it slipped."

"This should work out perfect for what I intend to use it for. It will be carried on my back pack and the way it feels and rides so far is great. Have not used it for cutting yet, but seems sharp enough, with good balance to be able to chop well. Actually bought 2, so I have faith."

"I've had a couple of these, and they are great for splitting wood around the campsite. I use the backpax like a wedge, holding it in place on top of the verticle wood piece and then I hit the top of the wedge with another piece of firewood. You will not be able to swing this thing with any power, so that works the best. I have dulled these on the pelvis of big game, so the steel could be a bit harder."

"No complaints about this great little hatchet. Light enough to carry miles into the wilderness, and especially handy on well-traveled trails with not very much small, downed wood. The short handle requires a quicker swipe to get through larger wood, but it's still easy enough for this girl and worth the reduction of weight and space compared the the full size axe. The blade is nice and sharp. So sharp in fact, that it dents pretty easily the first few uses, so a resharpening may be in order sooner than you expected. The only reason I didn't give this gadget a 5 is that it doesn't actually gather and chop the wood on its own. It does have the coolness factor, though, and your friends may just like it enough to do all the work while you filter water or just lie around the fire."

"This is an awesome product that does exactly what it is made to do. You can pack it anywhere and it will do just about anything you need it to do. I think the handle is actually un-breakable. I was bored one day and actually tried pretty hard to break it. I couldn’t do it. The steel seems good and it holds a sharp edge well into cutting/chopping chores. The sheath is good quality as well. Overall this axe is a winner. If you need a small axe that can tackle big jobs, this is the one you need."

"The blade is sharp, very sharp. I accidently poked myself with the edge and brought some blood. I thought the handle would be too short but it is just right. You can cut through 3 to 6" logs in no time. Everyone in my camping party loved it. They were all going to get one. I love the look and style of it, and it fits very well in my back pack. Thanks Gerber!"

"i bought this ax after hearing about the great quality of the gerber products and the lifetime guarentee. Ax chipped during its first use while camping and their costumer service has not answered a single complaint sent by me"

"I bought this to use on a back packing trip on the AT. I used it one night to clear a few limbs from a low lying tree in order to get a tent under there and some small diameter logs/limbs for a fire. the blade is worthless. I hit nothing but wood and the blade is all bent up. I'm a big gerber fan, but this is a piece of garbage. I wouldn't buy one."

"This is a great product. The quality is top notch. Easy to keep sharp and pretty much bombproof. What Gerber says about their handles being able to withstand a blow with a sledge hammer is true, I hit it with a splitting maul just for fun.

It doesn't work the best for heavy chopping on larger trees and such. For taking out trees I'd rather carry a light saw, and for clearing very light brush I'll carry a bowie, but this is right in the middle. You can split the pelvic bone on big game, take the heads and feet off rabbits, chop mid sized brush, and a lot of other stuff. The best part is you can do it all while carrying a very light, compact tool.

The only reason I give this product 4 stars is the niche it fills, for me its not as useful as I'd like it to be. The product is of the best quality and works exactly as advertised."
